Why do Japanese singing voices sound so different?

One big thing is that the Japanese has more “nasal” tones to it than English does, and that has an effect on the sound of the singing. For example, the “N” sound in Japanese can be a syllable all by itself. That is, an “N” with no vowel sound attached. That sounds odd to an English-speaker’s ears. There is also a very common style of singing (and speaking) amongst female pop singers to deliberately make themselves sound younger, which is the opposite of what most Western singers do. It’s an “affected” style that the singers use because it’s popular. Here’s the band Chu’s Day, whose singer usually does not use that affected style, doing a wonderful cover of Mariah Carey’s version of All I Want for Christmas is You:And singing an original song in Japanese:And if you check out some of the hard rock/heavy metal acts, the singers usually dispense with the affected voice:But the “nasal” tones of the language are still apparent. As to Korean singers sounding like Japanese singers, a lot of that is because the K-Pop industry modeled itself after the J-Pop industry.

Are there any American bands that sound like Japanese bands?

Welcome to the genre! First let me warn you that nobody can tell you exactly what fits you but you. Rock is such an incredibly diverse genre and there are literally thousands of bands out there. That being said, I'm personally a fan of all kinds of music, including J-Rock and J-Pop, and these are some "American" or rather English-Speaking bands that have a style similar to bands like FLOW and NICO Touches The Walls.

Avril Lavigne.

Relient K (While actually a Christian Rock band, they have amassed a large following from fans who aren't Christian as well. This band actually got me into Rock Music in general and perhaps I associate it with Japanese Music simply because it is what I listened to at the same time that I got into J-Pop but here you go anyway.)

Within Temptation

OneRepublic (While they are making waves today on the pop radio, OneRepublic also has been considered "Alternative Rock" in the past. Check out the song I provided here which provides a beautiful melody the likes of which you often find in a Japanese song.)

LOSTPROPHETS (BRILLIANT MUSIC but the lead singer turned out to be a pedophile and is rotting away in jail... Despite this, the music this band put out is awesome and I sincerely hope the rest of the band members regroup and put out new music).

If you like any of the above you may want to listen to Linkin Park as well. While they are a little bit more aggressive than the above, if you liked any of the acts I mentioned above you will probably like them. Google their songs, "In The End" or "Pushing Me Away".

Need help naming song - asian lyrics, female vocals, very early 90s?

The song may have been Japanese, but i can't be sure. I know it was in an Asian language, with female vocals. I believe it became somewhat popular in the states in the early 90s. I first heard it on alternative radio, I think Q -101 or WXRT, both are Chicago radio stations. I later seen the video on MTV of this band doing the song in question. If I remember correctly, it was 1 female and 2 males. I think the video was in B & W. Both guys in the video had thick glasses, a sort of geek like appeal to it, much like the video by The Rentals, "Friends of P" or Boggle's, "Video Killed The Radio Star"...MTV even used parts of the song in some commercials for it's extreme sports segments. The song had an alternative pop style - beat-nik - almost 60s surf music sound, up-beat, very heavy on the percussion...almost a "Grove Is In The Heart" meets "Wipe-Out"... if there are any ideas, please let me know!

What is the edm/trap song that begins with a melody that sounds like traditional chinese or other asian music?

It starts out with a melody that sort of sounds like a traditional chinese song, but then picks up and drops with a trap/edm beat.

To anyone who can sort of relate it to this, the trap part goes: "Duh-Duh-Duh" really loud and then continues with "d-d-d-d-d-d-duh" while still sort of keeping the melody at the start.

Thank you to anyone who can help me find it :)

Whats that newish song with the asian girl singing it in the music video?

She sounds like shes white. Its like a pop song you know. I heard it when i went bowling. shes riding a bike in the music video and her asian family is like singing too lol. its weird but its got a cool beat

Does Spotify have Asian music (specifically, Korean/Japanese/Taiwanese pop)?

Technically, yes, Spotify does have Asian music, as others on this question page have indicated, but the collection is sparse beyond the absolute top artists, and most of it is poorly organized (with artists, songs, and album titles a mix of misspelled English, inconsistent pinyin/transliteration, and on rare occasion the original language, etc.).In terms of Taiwanese music, Spotify's collection includes some oldies and the top artists of the past decade, like Jay Chou 周杰倫 and Leehom 王力宏 (accessible only if you search by their English names), but try searching Mayday 五月天 or Cheer Chen 陳綺貞, arguably two of the top artists/groups in Taiwan today, and there's nothing. In terms of Japanese music, I've been unable to find any substantial collection of music searching in either Japanese or English for artists like Ayumi Hamasaki 浜崎 あゆみ or Mika Nakashima 中島 美嘉, both extremely popular artists over the last decade. There are some anime collections or "music box" versions of their top songs, but not much else. For a non-Asian audience, Spotify has enough Asian music to be interesting, but for someone who is actually interested in and keeps up with Asian music, it's woefully inadequate.
