How should one deal with internships while applying for IAS (Indian Academy of Sciences) in a sophomore year?

I got summer internship at IIT Bombay through Indian Academy Of Sciences in sophomore year. I applied in 3rd sem with a cgpa of 8.First of all know your interest field i.e the area in which you want to work like bioinformatics, protien folding, sensors etc. Then look at the mentor whose research field matches your area of interest and choose him/her. Don’t get tempted to choose the professors from IITs or IISc who don’t have research field matching to your area of interest, which is main reason of not getting selected in IAS.Write statement of purpose (SOP) in a way that reflects your idea and thought process. Writing a fantastic SOP with your wit & humour is an art which can get you selected. Just before writing sop get a little bit knowledge about your interest area by surfing net. At the end furnish your sop by including that how this internship will be useful to you which will act as a cherry at the top of a cake. Never take anybody’s help while writing sop, just write with your mind and above mentioned process.Never ever think that if your cgpa is less then you will not get selected, the students who were interning with me had cgpa even less than me but when i asked about their statement of purpose they were really creative and unique, which made me realize that cgpa is not the determining factor of selection but sop and letter of recommendation is.Lastly get a good letter of recommendation from your university or college.Hope this helps. Good luck.

I'm doing my first internship, need preschool teachers advice!?

I am doing my first fulltime internship at a preschool starting tomorrow, and I am super nervous. I did a practicum which consist of me going to a preschool for only 6 hours a week, and I didn't find it pleasant because there just wasn't any communication between me and the supervised teacher. I am not trying to blame the teacher what so ever, b/c it takes 2 to communcate, but at times she made me feel like...I didn't exsist,or didn't make me feel welcomed. Of course I am/was nervous.
This internship I want to do this right, and have GREAT communication with the teacher, especially if i'm going to spend 40 hours a week for 3 months with my supervised teacher.

Here are some questions that I am concerned with:
1. Should I bring lunch? My aunt said that at my little cousin's preschool the teacher eats with the children, but however I feel like i'm an intern, that the preschool shouldnt have to provide my lunch.

2.How should i take desclipine? This is my hugest concern, b/c i feel like the "step parent" in the situation, b/c I am not the "real parent (aka teacher)" i shouldn't be the one to be like "Jimmy! If you do that one more time, i'm going to make you move your color to yellow.." How should i deal with this? How should i ask the supervised teacher about how i deal with that?

3. At my practicum, the teacher never asked me to do anything! So I was stuck in doing whatever I could find to do..which was communicate with the children in centers! Should I continue to do that? or use that time to communicate with the teacher? I don't want to seem like a bother, b/c I know they have lots of things to do, and i am sure they use center time to grade papers and what not..

4.In practicum, my supervised teacher didn't introduce me to the classroom, she just kinda told me to sit down, and I watched..and introduced myself later during center time. If my new supervised teacher asked me to introduce myself, how should i go about introducing myself? "My name is _____, and i am going to school to be a teacher.."?

thanks! any tips please feel free to say!

What things do I need to know before starting my intern at a data analytics firm?

So, these are the concepts which would help you to get a head-start at your intern.1. A statistical programming language.  (R or Python).  Some prefer R and some prefer Python; citing computational needs and production level issues; but I would suggest, learn both of them.2. Statistics: Know your stats well. So well, that you have to tell the distribution of the data from it's shape; and deduce the ways to deal with it. It saves a lot of time.3. Statistical Techniques: Know your regression techniques and other stat techniques really well and know how to use them in R and Python. Knowledge of time series analysis would help too.4. Know your way around Excel:  MS Excel is not as easy as it seems. Know your Excel well. It really helps a lot. It helps in pre-processing, cleaning and also preliminary analysis of data. Finally, think out of the box.  Analytics is all about creative thinking !

How do I deal with low internship starting salary offers?

This is a tough call. How much is this internship worth to you in the end? There are a few things that are not clear from you question.1. Is the offer inline with what they pay other undergrad interns at this company or what is typically paid to the average undergrad intern at all companies you are aware of? 2. Is this a large corporation or small company?3. Most importantly what drove you to apply to this company in the first place.Internships are about experience. I literally had this discussion today with one of the guys on my team. We were talking about how schools provide you with a bunch of tools but they do not give you a realistic experience for using the tools. He reminisced about showing his work in school vs. no one caring about seeing your work in the office just wanting results, faster. So consider if you are going to get something valuable from this internship. If it truly is that you are the only PHD at this company getting paid like an undergrad, ask why. If the company is just paying PHDs less than other companies get over it. If you will not be happy because of money turn down the internship, you will have a chip on your shoulder and it will reflect in your work in the end. If you are only doing an internship for the money you missed out on networking 101 somewhere along the way.
