Brain fart!! Need help trying to figure out a word....?
What is the word for "a nicer way to say things?"..I swear that it's on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't get it out of my brain. I think it starts with an "E"(it probably dsn't, lol), but what could it be? Basically..the definition/work when someone says something nice or sugar-coated instead of blunt and forward. Kind of like saying..."wow, you're looking a bit rough around the edges today" instead of saying "D@mn, you look ugly today".....Okay, bad example, but you know what I mean! Help please. Need help figuring out Algebra Word Problem?
A manufacturer can sell a certain product for $80 per unit. Total cost consists of a fixed overhead of $4500 plus production costs of $50 per unit. (a) How many units must the manufacturer sell to break even? Be assured I DON'T want the answer but I need to figure out how to find it. How can a word's origin help to figure out the spelling?
Thanks for the A2A! If you are a spell bee competitions viewer you must've seen that contestants generally ask for a word's origin before they spell the word correctly. Well, according to me a word's origin does play a role in its spelling. When you see words of Latin origin, on observation you would see that the letter Z is rarely used in Latin origin words. Similarly the letters k & w also doesn't exist unless the word is passed through another language before coming into English. Latin words also don't have any rh's, ch's, or ph's , unless it has passed through Greek origin as well. In words of Greek origin the sound of a short I is spelled with a Y mostly for instance gymnasium, syzygy,dyslexic,etc. Also the F sound is also spelled as ph for instance in alphabet, phobia,phonics,etc.Many words of French origin have silent consonants like faux, roux, (X is silent), and champagne (G is silent). The letters ch and ll are considered single letters in Spanish. For eg- Chino, Chucho, Choto,etc.Words derived from Japanese almost never have double consonants. Exceptions being- hokku,issei,momme,seppuku,teppanyaki,shikken & tenno. The long A sound at the end of an Italian origin word is often spelled with an E. For eg.- vigilante,macrame,etc.English words of German origin use k's, ck's, and ch's. They don't have c's unless it has been passed down from another language that uses c's frequently. Hence, there are many rules which connect origin of words and with their spellings that's why probably you'll notice people asking origin of a word to be doubly sure before spelling a word.
