What are some guidelines for writing a good topic sentence for a paragraph?

My teens have this issue with writing. We sit at the kitchen counter with a cup of tea and their writing assignment. They heave a sigh and then begin to fumble around verbally trying to tell me what their assignment is. They have the thoughts and understand their topic (usually - ha!) but it is all jumbled and they are frustrated by the idea of adhering to a particular format, like the traditional 6 paragraph essay. It’s the format that trips them up.I turn to them after they have said about 4 minutes of highly frustrated and stilted attempts at formulating their thoughts into a writing format and say, “So what are you trying to say?”This is done not to further frustrate them, and not done in a snarky tone but rather this is an attempt to get them to distill their thoughts down to a nutshell, a singular sentence or two. That is what you need to do: In your first sentence you drill down to what you are going to talk about, the essence of your topic.Make your first sentence a sharp, bold stab at the viewer to get their attention. Then build your first paragraphs around that idea.So for example when writing about the issues of poverty and lack of clean water:“Clean water can mean life or death for many millions of people around the world. The issue is so vital for survival for vast numbers of people that whole villages of people will join together to help attain that one goal: clean water. How much better would life be for throngs of people around the world if clean water was easy to attain, was accessible, and was available to every man, woman and child on the planet? Let’s examine this issue by drilling down deep into what is at stake.”So to cleanly break it down:Thrust: Make the first sentence like a thrust of information. If the first sentence is a bit provocative, even better. Tell the viewer what you are going to delve into.Build: The body of the paragraph is essentially an argument of WHY this topic is interesting. Why the topic is even relevant, why even bother examining the topic. Think of your paper as an argument: You have to prove your point. Maybe even a tad bit aggressively.Tell: The last sentence should drive home the point that the writer is going to take the reader on a tour of the topic. You the writer are the tour guide for the topic, so the reader should be prepared to sit back and enjoy the tour. You are telling the viewer what to expect on the mental tour.

Good luck! I change the order a little bit, but you can easily change it back. I always like to present my weaker arguments first and then end with my best arguments.
