I Need Ideas For My Biology Ap Animal Lab

Ideas for my Animal Behavior Lab for AP Biology?

In my AP Bio class we have to create a lab on animal behavior and bring the animal so that another student in my class may perform the lab. I really need ideas on ideas of what to do my lab on. The animal I'm using is a Campbell's Dwarf Hamster... I was thinking about doing an experiment where I would remove all "fun" elements from his cage so it's just an empty cage and fill one half of it with his normal bedding that most dwarf hamsters use when kept in captivity as pets and fill the other side with dirt to burrow in that would simulate where wild dwarf hamsters in Central Asia live and see which side my hamster prefers over a period of 10 minutes. However, I'm not so sure about this idea since I don't know if it will even be an interesting experiment. My hamster could just decide to stay in his regular bedding the entire time... And i would REALLY appreciate other suggestions, which is why I posted this question! And please post ANY ideas you have. The lab must be performed in a 20 minute time period, so be aware of that... and other than that my teacher pretty much gave us free reign. It can involve food, habitat, a stimulus, etc. Thanks again (:

AP Biology: Animal Behavior.?

Various cues could include star location; sun location; time of day relative to the first two; magnetic field of the earth *which pigeons also use. There's some evidence from Italian studies (Papi & Fiori) that pigeons also use odor clues. There is also evidence from other studies that pigeons hear infrasound and may be using sound as a cue as well.

Migratory birds such as storks, etc., may also use all of the above and perhaps also on occasion follow landmarks, such as mountain ranges, etc., but that may be because of the thermals those provide.

Animal Behavior AP Biology question?

By imprinting you mean the ability for parents to recognize their young and the youngs ability to recognize the parents, correct?

Because the Herring gulls nest much farther apart I would think they only need to recognize the nest and its location. It can't get confused because it's nest is the only one in the area.

Birds that nest in large groups have to learn to imprint on their own young. The babies could wander off and get mixed up with the others, a parent has to know their own kid.

A group of "fake nests" could be placed around an individual Herring Gulls nest to see what their response is. Could the Herring Gull pick its own eggs out from the group?

What should I research in AP Biology?

I did ap biology last year but never had to do any research projects.

This year i'm doing AP Enviro science, (hella easy class... you should take if you have a like bio or chem, + an interest in nature. juss sayin.)

uhmmm you could do a baseline study (is that what its called?) on animal/plant biodiversity in a given area (like a park), and how/what factors affect it , like # of visitors in the park or # of offleash dogs, or the weather. Just go and count all the birdies and how many there are. Warning: Easier said than done. I do that for my APES class and i gotta spend like 2 hrs every saturday playing ninja in a park trying to develop my eyesight/hearing. Fun stuff though.

Or, you could..

Research the effects of fertilizer on plant growth. Practical relation to real world situations: soil leeching, agriculture overdosing of fertilizer, increased eutrophication thanks to runoff, dead-zone in gulf of mexico.

idk.

I know a guy thats researching the effects of electrical shocking on plant growth. I think he's doing hydroponics and then putting electrodes into the water. Idk. Fun stuff, but doesn't really have any usage/practical applications into real sci...

Do you have any ideas for my research question/topic for my Biology IA? It has to be outside the lab.

I did Biology at Higher Level! I could only recommend doing something related to ecology, as the topic inherently requires field work…You could look at correlation between multiple variables, such as the relationship between magnesium content in soil and “greenness” of the leaf. Also, you could test the applicability of Gersmehl diagrams to the real world, by measuring biomass, litter and soil content in various habitats, and comparing it to textbook values. If ecology isn’t your thing, then why not do an enzyme-related IA? Example: Concentration of RuBisCO in the leaves of a plant species vs. exposure to sunlight. If you’d rather do something with animals instead, then you could try working out the Simpson’s diversity index of a species in different areas, using the capture-mark-release-recapture method… Just make sure to stay within the ethical codex of the IB!IAs which only require observation can also be very effective, e.g. surveying different habitats for the number of diurnal vs nocturnal species, and then corellating this data with the availability of food at certain times of day to get to a conclusion and evaluation! How you’ll do these experiments is completely up to you, as it is your individual investigation – don’t just use my ideas straight away, but use them more as an inspiration for your own – take this as a chance to shine as a student and show your individuality and originality as a biologist to the IB!Also, do not just record and present data – make sure the there is a hypothesis and a null hypothesis, such that you can support one or the other using your recorded data… after all, this should be an empirically sound investigation!I may update this answer in the future with helpful links and resources when I have the time to recollect them (I graduated a year ago)! And never forget:Best of luck, and thanks for the A2A!Alex – Past HL Biology Student, turned my level 2 into a 5 in 3 months…

What is a good field trip idea for a biology class?

Here are links to lists of field trip suggestions for New York. I'm not sure which would be close enough for your class, but a few science museums are listed. http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/trips/NewYorkTrips.htm
http://www.fieldtrip.com/ny/index_ny.htm

Alternatively, a visit to a local park, forest, or river could give you a chance to look at insects, compare growth of trees that get different amounts of sunlight, or examine what sort of weeds are spreading throughout the area.

Hospitals often offer tours. Try a restaurant or a health food store to discuss nutrition. Some college labs will allow field trips to look at what sort of biology research is being done in the area.

2010 AP biology free response lab essay guesses?

maybe the Chi square fruit fly one b/c they only asked that once before. Or maybe plant pigmentation. Or transpiration. EXPECT A PLANT QUESTION OF SOME SORT.

But i know its not going to be the animal behavior one or the Dissolved oxygen one b/c that was the question in 2008 and 2009. And probably not the enzyme catalase one b/c they asked that 4 times before...but who knows??

good luck for tomorrow!!! :)
