I Need Some Advice On What To Do About My Mental Health

Mental health advice?

I am 14yrs of age tomorrow morning I am going to see a doctor to talk about my mental health. Is there anyone out there who would spare me some advice, words of couragment or help me feel less anxious during it?

What is the best advice you can give to future mental health counselors to be effective in their work? What skills do I need to stand out to clients?

NEVER, EVER, use the phrase “…and what do YOU think about that?…” etc. - it serves badly on the profession, and the client is NOT There to ascertain their own opinion on the matter- rather is there to obtain a professional opinion on the matter. These types of phrases only serve to demonstrate one’s incompetence of a profession, in reality. Also, pull your head out, open your ears, and listen. A good practitioner within ANY health care field listens to the patient more than they talk, only stopping to ask the relevant questions. However, don’t over do it and remember to LET the patient TALK, and listen to what is said. This is how one gets INFORMATION.

Can someone give me advice to get over my mental health problems?

Counseling....sticking to your medications and not stopping them when you start to feel better. You will find yourself getting better in time that is due to the therapy and medications combined. Do not stop either one. You will need the two along with support from family and friends. Take your medications at the same time every day so that your levels stay the same. Do not cancel nor skip therapy sessions if at all possible, they are also very important in learning not only of your illness but learning how to cope with your illness and family counseling is a great idea. Mental disorders not only affect us but our families.

Can crying damage your mental health?

Crying doesn't damage your mental health, BUT a damaged mental health (a mental condition/illness/hormonal imbalance) would cause you to cry far too much and far too often than is reasonable. Add that to the cutting urges and history, it seems that you might have a mental condition and it would benefit you to seek professional help. NO, it does not mean that you are crazy. It is not your fault. It is merely a fact. Let me put it this way, do people with diabetes blame themselves for getting it? They can't, it's just something with how their body processes sugar that is wrong. With mental conditions, it's the same way, the chemicals in the brain are misfiring and causing one to process thoughts in a weird way. So, don't beat yourself up about this. A lot of people have these conditions... and manage to not harm themselves anymore with the help of a good professional therapist and good medication.

This is not the medieval era where they would blame mental conditions on the devil and demons (ok, maybe some people still do) ... with the advent of science, it is actually found that many mental conditions are genetic... so unless you could have done anything before you were born to magic your dna into being non-bipolar or non-whatever... then that's the hand we are dealt with. We have to make the best out of it.

In looking for a good therapist, you have to ask around or shop around in a sense... because you need to find someone who suits you and someone you are not comfortable with so that you would be able to build a good trusting relationship with your therapist. Medication and therapy go hand in hand, one without the other, it's very hard to stand on one leg, is it? You have to help yourself too... but there are a lot of people who are undergoing the same problems as you... we are all keeping up masks and showing everyone we are "fine" when we are all not. You are not alone.
