Musical theatre audition song- female alto, slower song?
Go old-school and try Kurt Weill's "Surabaya Johnny", a terrific song about seduction, betrayal and abandonment. Or Brecht and Weill's "The Ballad of The Soldier's Wife", written during WWII while they were both in exile from Germany. The song lists all the things that the German soldier sends back to his wife from the conquered capitals of Europe, from a pair of Czech shoes, to a silken gown from Paris, and finally a widow's veil from Russia, where Hitler's dreams of world domination ended. The song was broadcast into Germany by the Allies as part of their propaganda offensive. It's extremely simple and quite emotional. I can guarantee that neither of these will be overdone, but "Surabaya Johnny" will probably nail it. Hope this helps!

Why do people love engine noise?
I think it has to do with why humans like music, we enjoy auditory stimulus in patterns. The repeating sounds of an internal combustion engine produce a rhythm; one we associate with power and the ‘soul’ of a machine. The off-beat throb of a flat plane V8 makes a nice baseline, the growl of a boxer engine, the crescendo shriek of a V12 revving through the gears, the calando of an engine on overrun during deceleration, it’s automotive music to a car guy’s (and gal’s) ears. We also associate it with power and precision, a well tuned engine doesn’t have noise (pops and drops from mistimed firing, bad valve seals, etc, you can hear subtle problems with an engine before it’ll start throwing CELs. ), it has a crisp pattern and a visceral pulse you can feel in your chest. Turbo noises are just sex for your eardrums. As far as the dislike of noiseless electrics, I think that has more to do with people being conditioned to 120 years of combustion; we miss a sound we associate with a running vehicle. I remember driving my friend’s Model S and getting to a stoplight and thinking the car had died, forgetting it doesn’t make noise or have to idle. I think if I drove one regularly I’d get used to it, but admittedly, there was something unsatisfying about putting the hammer down and pulling to 80 mph away from the lights in his Tesla.
Chorus: ba da da da da da da da da da da da da?
Could it be Catch My Disease by singer Ben Lee? Check the video on Youtube or something similar to see if it is (that is, if you don't know the song). This might be the song you're looking for, but you might not.
