I Need Time Zone Help

Time zone Help! GMT, PT and ET?

They don't use GMT all year in the UK. During the summer they use British Summer Time, which is 1 hour ahead of GMT.

Normally, Eastern Time is 5 hours behind UK Time. so something that happens at 6pm ET happens at 11pm in the UK. There are a couple of exceptions. Since we don't change our clocks for summer at the same time, there are usually 2 weeks in March and a week between October and November when Eastern Time is only 4 hours behind UK Time.

How do I figure out time zone?

i am assuming you have an idea of where the 7 continents are located on a map and that you have an idea of where countries are (ie: you know that europe is north of the equator and that its next to africa and asia and that you know Brazil is in south america next to the atlantic ocean and not over in southern africa)

every 15 degrees its a different time zone. if you start at the grenwich meridian, when you go 15 degrees west it gets an hour earlier. 15 degrees east it gets an hour later. if you keep going west (towards the united states) you will eventually hit the international dateline out in the middle of the pacific ocean. when you cross that line it becomes a day later (remember you're still going west). remember the hour still continues to get earlier even after you cross it. so on the east side of the dateline (towards the united states) it might be monday november 4th at 1am then when you go over it to the west side (towards asia) it becomes tuesday november 5th at 12am

heres a couple extra notes for ya: the grenwich meridian is the exact same line as the prime meridian. its called the grenwich meridian only when you're refering to time. the grenwich meridian (aka prime meridian) is by the united kingdom and goes through far western africa. go west of the grenwich meridian u go across the atlantic to the U.S.. go east and you'll find asia.

one more thing...i said every 15 degrees its a different time zone. if you take 15(degrees) multiplied by 24 (hours) you get 360...which would take you all the way around the world!

one last thing then i promise i'll quit! the plus and minus numbers are probably refering to the hours. go west of the grenwich meridian (towards the U.S.) you add an hour...go east and you subtract an hour. you might also see a plus and minus on each side of the international dateline refering to adding or subtracting a day depending on which direction you're traveling when you cross it.

Help Calculating Time Zones?

So I have a question in a Financial class which really confuses me.

Brain is going to take a flight from Boston, Massachusetts, to San Francisco, California. The flight leaves Boston at 10:25 p.m. Boston time and arrives in San Francisco at 6:10 a.m. San Francisco time. If San Francisco is in the Pacific time zone and Boston is in the eastern time zone, how long is the flight?

The choices are
A. 4 h 45 min
B. 3 h 45 min
C. 7 h 45 min
D. 5 h 45 min

I want to say C or D because I already counted how many hours the flight was but what gets me it the time difference which leads me to subtracting 3 hours giving me D. Help?

PHP date() / gmdate() question - Please help me with setting timezone?

With PHP version 5.0+ you can use date_default_timezone_set() to set your local timezone in scripts, and then use the date() function to give out the proper date and time for your local area.

HOWEVER I need to use this same concept with the built in function gmdate(). The servers I will be running my code off of use PHP version 4.0

I have the first part running correctly with this code:
// $date = gmdate ("m-d-Y h:i:s A");
NOTE: $date is actually the current date and time, not just the date.

What I don't know how to do is apply my current time zone to this? I have a form that allows you to select the proper time zone and now i need the gmdate() to alter its time (think this is called offset) according to the timezone.

Can anyone help my with this?

How do I help my toddler sleep in a different time zone?

This may not be the answer you want to see, but we have traveled four times from the east coast to the west coast (all of both our families are is there) with our now 22 month old daughter.  We have stayed on east coast time for each week long trip. The first two trips were during her two a day nap phase, and the last two trips were during her one nap a day phase.  We would wake up 4:00 - 5:00am each day, and she would go to bed at 8:00pm or so each evening (normally we put her down for the night between 10:30 and 11:00pm).  On the first two trips, we stayed together alone through the first nap, then went to interact with the family/activity of the day, and had her second nap occur wherever we were.On the seond two trips we would interact with family and start the days activity as soon as the family was awake and have her one nap occur wherever we were. This worked for all situations we were in, whether we were staying with family, staying at a destination resort, or visiting Disneyland and staying at the hotel (which I recommend as you can go back and forth to the resort from the hotel as necessary with relative ease).

Is a time zone equivalent to one hour?

Usually, but not always.

For example,
PST 1:00pm
MST 2:00pm
CST 3:00pm
EST 4:00pm
AST 5:00pm
NST 5:30pm (Newfoundland standard time is only 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic standard time. There are 23 one hour time zones and two 30 minute time zones in the world. The other 30 minute time zone is in New Zealand.)
