I Need To Figure Out How Much Bigger I Need To Get A Ring Re-sized

How much does it cost get my wedding rings resized to a bigger size?

Alright
#1 Depends on the setting
If its a solitaire simple band type ring, it can cost up to $70-100 to resize, if going up a few sizes.

#2 How many sizes is it going up

thee two things will make the resizing cost more or less and the jeweler will depend on the cost and the time it takes.
When getting my 2 resized (engagement and band) Alot of jewelers either refused to resize my 1/2 eternity ring (diamonds half way around it) or wanted outrageous $ or wanted me to sign a form saying if they broke it or lost a diamond that I could sue them or get them to fix it for free. I did find one jeweler who was a decent price, and was really understanding. They resized both of my rings for $70 (CHEAP) and made me feel better about getting the band done, "if we have any problems we will take responsibility and fix it or replace it free of charge." 1 day for them to do both rings, while others told me it would take 7 to 14 days.

* When resizing a ring up a jeweler has one of two options, either stretch the metal -which they will do it the metal is thick enough to thin out without breaking or creating a weak point. Option 2 is to cut the ring in the back and add metal to it (this costs slightly more) BTW A Good jeweler can do this without even a line of where they cut it and added metal.

You will have to spend a day- in the morning all around and get estimate costs and time, pick out a few to take the ring to to show them what it looks like and will require, then find out a closer estimate. Find out the pros and cons. The places I've taken my rings too (always) has the jeweler ONSITE, this way they personally can look at it and talk to you about what they would do to resize it and the best action. *the only reason I know all of this is I asked questions ALOT*

How much would it cost to get my ring resized & where to go?

The cost will vary based on how much it needs to be re-sized and the type of metal it is. Not all metals can actually be re-sized, those that can, can usually only be re-sized 1-2 sizes each way.

You're looking at a guesstimate of about $50 give or take.

Depending on where the ring was purchased, they may offer resizing free or at a discount from them.

Otherwise you need to look for a locally owned jeweler (not a chain store like Kay or Jared), they usually have someone with the expertise and the equipment on-site to do it. Chain stores like Kay & Jared have to send their items out for repair and re-sizing because they don't have the equipment or expertise to do it.

Some retail stores like JCPenney and Sears have jewelry repair on site, they normally can re-size jewelry. Not sure about Sears, but I have had jewelry re-sized from JCP and didn't have any problems with it. The turn around time was 1-2 days, rather than 1-2+ weeks.

Your best bet is a local jeweler.

How much should it cost to get a ring resized?

Larger or smaller?  How many sizes?  What metal??  How wide is the band? How many stones??  What kind of stones??  All these questions are important to answer your question.  Obviously it costs more to size larger than smaller because you have to add metal.  How much metal depends on how many sizes up.  Platinum is more expensive than gold (and more difficult to work with), so that makes a difference.  Gold is more expensive than silver, so that makes a difference on the cost. How wide the ring also affects how much metal will be used.Better jewelers guarantee their work against stone loss, so there is a cost for that.If your stones (if any) are diamonds, sapphires, or rubies, then the sizing can be done with a torch as a source of heat.  Any other stones (in most cases) are not heat tolerant, so sizing would need to be done with a laser welder so that no heat travels up the shank and cause damage to the stones. All this being said, you should pay at little as $25-$30 dollars for a narrow band with no stones being sized smaller and up, and $40 on up for anything being made larger.

How much is it to have 1 ring resized and 1 ring to replace a stone?

No, the first poster is wrong. Stores will NOT re-size them for free. It depends if you're sizing them up and down. If down, it's around $35 dollars and if up ONE size it should be around the same. If it's more than two sizes, it could be upwards of $50 (all depending on the jeweler). It should really only take about one day to re-size the actual ring, one day to send it in and one day to send it back. It should be around 3 days...but could take up to 5 days depending on how busy they jeweler is. Just go to a reliable jewelry store and have them estimate how long and how much it will be. :-)

Now, as for the cracked stone, it truly depends on that gem that's being replaced. You'll have to have them estimate it when you take it in before you actually decide to have them replace it.

I used to work at Samuel's Jewelers and we had people come in all the time asking if we could size the rings for them or replace stones. Call around a few places and get some ideas before you choose one!
Hope that helps you out!

How are platinum rings resized?

Platinum is a fabulous metal, is great to work with, and most high end jewelers prefer platinum. In most sidings, of any precious metal, a tiny amount of the ring is cut out when sizing smaller, or an equally tiny piece added to go larger. Torch soldering or welding, or a laser welder all make excellent joints. Some simpler bands can also be stretched or compressed, which is fast, and needs no cutting or welding at all.Platinum welds or solders at much higher temperatures than gold alloys. This requires additional protection for gemstones when doing torch work. A water bath or comparable techniques work in many cases. For some jobs we use a laser welder, which doesn't heat the surrounding metal nearly as much as torch sizing. We do this everyday, and any good jeweler can size platinum safely.

How much larger can a ring be resized in proportion to its original size?

It depends on the style, especially if there are small gems set into the ring. Plain rings can often be sized up any amount, as  long as any thin sections are cut out and additional material is added of a heavy enough cross section to be strong at the new size. For rings with small gems set, we have 2 options.  Option one : Bend  the area with gems, putting pressure on them which can make them come out, then tighten or even reset any insecure gems. This in practice means if there are gems set about half way around, sizing up 1 size is easy, 2-3 is OK... More than 3nis fraught with issues. Option two: Only  bend the plain part of the ring. Making it not exactly round, which can look bad and limits up size to about 1, maybe 2 sizes up at most...  So the  more stones (or delicate areas like filigree work or other pierced work) the less sizeable a ring is. Of  course a plain band can be sized farther... Most hold or platinum bands can be stretched (no cut required) 1-3 sizes without issues (hard white gold less, softer yellow gold and platinum more) In the end anything is possible, but these are guidelines that work on most rings. How long will it take to get my ring resized?

Depends on the size. If the ring has enough material, the increasing process takes about 3–5 minutes. If we have to decrease the size, it's a little more hassle so it'll take a little more time, but nothing that can't be done under an hour. These estimates are on a workshop level though, A Jewellery shop will always ask you to leave your Jewellery for 1 to 3 days.

How do I choose a ring size for a ring that can’t be resized?

My guess is the ring in question is made of one of the “contemporary metals” that is popular now for wedding bands (cobalt, tungsten carbide, titanium, etc.).If you are buying these rings new, make sure the manufacturer has a lifetime sizing guarantee. They don’t actually size it, but exchange it for a new ring that’s the current size. There usually is a nominal fee for shipping and insurance to do this. Ask the jeweler you’re buying the rings from for the specifics. Now there are gold/silver/platinum rings that are not practical to resize. Often the problem is elaborate design work around the entire band that if metal was added or removed would disrupt the style. Another is low quality micropave diamonds on an engagement ring. Sometimes you can’t size these in fear the stone will all pop out and the jeweler would be at risk to replace them. There is no good solution to these problems. I would not buy any ring, however, that is larger than your current size. I would be more worried about losing the ring than getting it resized!

How much do they charge at Walmart to get a ring sized?

If you purchased the ring at Walmart, they do not charge anything to size it the first time. That is of course if the style and design of the ring allows for sizing. Some stones and setting do not lend themselves to sizing. IN such instances you are better off ordering the ring in the size you need. They do not offer ring sizing for jewelry purchased elsewhere. The ring sizing they do is sent out to a third party they have a contract with. Since they only offer sizing on rings they sell, should the ring be lost or damaged, they will replace it by ordering the same ring in the appropriate style.
