I Never Sleep On My Back

Why I can't sleep on my back? I can only sleep on the sides. I wish I could sleep on my back to have my back right.

Yes, you can!!You just need to train yourself to, which can be difficult at first since you’ve probably been sleeping on your sides for years and years.I actually love to sleep on my stomach, though I know it’s super bad. I’ve had self-inflicted muscle and tendon strains on my neck and shoulders from resting like that for a long time. After seeing so many physiotherapists and chiropractors, I decided it was time to train myself how to sleep on my back - which is the ideal sleeping position because it’s the position that keeps your body as neutrally-aligned as possible. It’s just like forming any other habit, really. Acknowledge that any change is hard, but you just need to keep doing it and keep pushing through until its second nature.I think society has misquoted the famous “we form a habit in 21 days.” The original study concluded that a new habit took AT LEAST 21 days to form, with an average of 66 days. [1] That’s slightly over 2 months, and it sounds about right for a lasting habit.Of course, when you’re unconscious, it’ll be a bit harder to do…nonetheless, try these 5 steps:[2]Prepare your bodyStretch before bedEmpty your bladderMeditateWrite in your journalLeave the stress from the day behindPut in preventionsTry putting a tennis ball in your shirt or pant pocket, so when you turn on your side, the uncomfortable bump will make you turn on your backOr put pillows or some object on both sides of you to block you from turningWhat I like to do is to put a pillow under my knees when I’m sleeping on my back. This way, when I try to turn on my side, the pillow under my leg makes it too awkward for me to want to stay on my side for long.Think about staying on your backIt’s amazing how much more aware your body and mind is when you consciously think about your goalIt’s even better to say it out loud to set your intentionsForgive yourself if you mess upSelf-love is important! <3Reward yourself when you do it rightSo is treating your fine self! With enough time, you’ll eventually get it right. Don’t worry :)Footnotes[1] What it Takes to Break a Habit (It’s More Than 21 Days!)[2] The Best Sleeping Position: Train Yourself to Sleep This Way!

Why can't I sleep on my back?

Actually its a habit and normally it develops in childhood stage and its really becomes difficult to change as you grow. But if you want to change that habit then you must have to try hard and consistently and after sometime you will be able to change your habit.

If I never sleep on my back, can I get sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is considered a disorder when 5 or more apneas take place, on average, every hour of sleep. If <5 apneas take place every hour it is considered to be "normal." Sometimes sleep apnea is positional. That is it takes place predominantly in one position. That can be seen only be detected with a sleep study. The only way to know for sure that you "never" sleep on your back would be to record your sleep. It is almost impossible to know what position you are sleeping in when you are sleeping. It can also not be derived from the position you wake up in. Positional sleep apnea could affect some people only when they are sleeping on a particular side. In the majority of cases it is related to sleeping on your back. In cases of positional apnea, positional devices can be used to keep you off of your back during sleep. These can sometimes be helpful.

Is it odd/bad to not sleep on your back?

I sleep on my back a fair amount in the summertime, if I do not have the air conditioning on, and it is quite warm. When I am really cold, I tend to sleep on my stomach. If it is neither hot nor cold, I can be comfortable sleeping on my side.

In commercials, people have to sleep so that you can see their faces, because even in sleep, the face communicates a lot (and I am sure that the advertisers hope for better sales with the face showing, because of that increase in communication). There are lots of other unrealistic things on television, too. And, when you sleep, I hope that you do not even dream of trying to do the things that are in some of the more fantastic commercials! People cannot even do some of them safely. : c )

Happy New Year, and have a restful and relaxing 2007!

Why can I never sleep the night before first day back at school?

You're just going back to school ? -_-
Why?

Well if you go to bed at crazy hours during the holiday - and just expect to go to bed at a normal time for school it's not gonna work. You have to slowly adjust yourself.
Go to bed half an hour earlier each night - so it's best to start this a few weeks in advance.
My tip? Don't go to bed tonight if you can't sleep til 5. The two measly hours of sleep will only make focusing harder because your brain is still clouded with the sleeping thingy.
Just buy a few amps/monsters/red bulls and head to school :D

Does sleeping on your back improve your posture?

i doubt it does but if you really want to improve your posture, try this method. I swear that it works and showed my sister to do this also because she has bad posture.

Get one of those half sliced foam sticks that is long enough to support the base of your neck to the bottom of your behind and place it on the floor. roll up a soft towel to place under your neck and head and lay on the foam stick with your feet on the floor but knees up so that your feet are on either side of the foam stick.

Stay like that for 5 to 10 minutes each day and you'll naturally sit and stand straighter for the rest of the time you're up. Your shoulders will be more pulled back as well as your neck and it won't seem like you are making any effort to keep it that way. It seemed each time i did this, the time that i kept better posture naturally, increased so i didn't need to do it every single day.

My physical therapist showed me this although i just bought one of those foam sticks that you buy for the kids when they swim which is not sliced in half and cheaper. It is a little more challenging to keep it still but it forces your back to focus more and actually strengthens it a bit as an added bonus. But it seems they only sell that in the summer time.

Why do I have nightmares when sleeping on my back?

I’ve also had nightmares & night terrors, lying on my back.In times of distress, people often curl up over their abdomen in what is called the fetal position because it is the most instinctive way to protect the most important organs of the body.Biologically speaking, lying on your back asleep is the most vulnerable position your body can be in. This may evoke an instinctual feeling of fear that lies deep in your subconscious. Combine this instinct with the fact that you’re fast asleep and dreaming & your thinking brain could produce a fantastic realization of this fear in your mind’s eye.Try an empowering meditation while falling asleep on your back. Sweet dreams…Why do people instinctively curl over their abdominal area in times of danger?

How can I overcome my fear of sleeping on my back?

I'm not sure if this is a rare thing or not, but I'm scared to sleep on my back. I feel too exposed, and adding to it is the fact that I regularly get SP if I'm on my back. I've been having trouble sleeping on my stomach or sides lately, and have the urge to roll onto my back, but I'm too scared to do so. I definitely consider a bizarre phobia, one that I would like to overcome as soon as possible. If I try to lay on my back, almost immediately I start to panic and then roll back onto my side. Does anyone else have this? How can I overcome it?

Why does my back always hurt when I sleep in a bed, but not when I sleep on a couch?

Possibly you’re spending too much time on your back when in your bed but not when you’re on the sofa and certainly not in a chair. Some people aren’t comfortable sleeping on their back. This can be due to weak abdominal muscles or muscles that are too tight and fail to relax completely when you sleep. If you tend to sleep on your back, try putting a pillow under your knees and possibly an extra one under your head and tops of your shoulders so that you have a bit of bend in your body, particularly where your legs meet your hips.Meanwhile, try to find some exercises that will strengthen abdominal muscles. There are a number of good ones, but I don’t think I could adequately describe them here. Check online. There should be quite a few YouTube videos that will show you exactly how to do them. Also, your mattress might be too soft, or you may need to invest in a new one. They don’t last forever. Look for a mattress that is medium-hard. A mattress that’s too soft doesn’t offer adequate support. You might also need new box springs.

When I sleep on my back I get sleep paralysis and my stomach gets pressured a lot, why?

Not sure about the stomach pressured thing but i slept on my back for the first time in a while and woke myself up screaming last night. I almost never sleep on my back And the sleep paralysis never happens. I researched that it may have to do with sleep apnea.on your back, during rem sleep the body falls into a state of near paralysis and tries to wake you up to save you. I guess that sleep appnea symptoms are more severe when sleeping on the back.this seems to be the only reasonable solution i found on a google search. im going to get tested for sleep apnea because this happened once before when sleeping on back, (the only other time ever i slept on my back) i woke up screaming too. not Good!
