I Really Love Wolves. How To Get Closer To Them

I heard Akitas are the closest breed to the wolf?

Not completely.

They are one of 14 ancient breeds with genetics most closely related to the wolf. But even then, it's important to understand that they haven't had wolf ancestors for many hundreds of years.

Here's a great article one of our regulars posted the other day:
http://www.workingdogweb.com/RSH-2004-2....

It's worth a read!

ADD: "Wolfdogs" are not a breed, as they aren't purebred. The Czechoslovakian Vlcak may be the closest modern purebred relative of the Wolf.

I love wolves! Why do people kill them and hate them?

Nyu the simple unfortunate and painful truth is because people are IGNORANT. Everyone who is saying wolves kill people are wrong. In all actuality people KILL people. It is all based on the training BY the person. THose that say the wolf is unpredictable, dangerous, and henceforth treat the wolf cruely are the people that are killing people by neglecting the wolf/wolfdog.

Nyu I completely understand this question because I volunteer with wolfdogs from low to one wolfdog that to me seems very high.

If you think about little red riding hood she LIED. Wolfdogs are very predictable animals that display there emotions through body language hence they are the model for canine behavior.

Unfortunately Nyu people I put this blatantly are STUPID for believing myths. They need facts before deciding, and they don't need to base there opinions off the lies of little red riding hood.

Duke what if someone used you as a target? People like you are despicable maybe the hunters should change there aim onto "something" else. >=]

Are wolves really evil?

So there are answers that already respond to the fact that wolves are not evil at all. However, I will like to comment on the assumption which you made. “Wolves are portrayed as evil creatures everywhere in the world”Wolves don’t exist everywhere in the world and thus not every culture is interested in depicting the wolf as anything at all.

Do you like wolves?

Yes, they have been my favorite animal since the age of 12. Wolves are beautiful creatures and are often seen as threats because of how dangerous they can be, but they are just like spiders, they are more scared of us more than you are scared of them (If that makes sense) Wolves were never known to hurt or kill a human being unless provoked or rabid.. I have also been drawing since I was 3 now I have developed a talent for drawing wolves, I’ve been to two wolf sanctuaries in my entire life, each one let you interact physically with them, and I got to pet and howl with them and watch their behavior it was amazing and fascinating and nothing like any human being has experienced before!

Can a pack of wolves take down a fully grown tiger?

The answer is no.Wolves’ greatest threat, other than man, is the tiger. Even a lone tiger is more than a match for a whole pack of wolves. (Check the climax of the 2016 Jungle Book, during which Shere Khan fights off the wolves)In Siberia, the cats tend to depress the canines’ numbers, either to the point of localized extinction or to such low numbers so as to make them a functionally insignificant component of the ecosystem. However, wolves appear capable of escaping competitive exclusion only when human pressure decreases tiger numbers. In areas in which wolves and tigers share ranges, the two species typically display a great deal of dietary overlap, resulting in intense competition. Wolf and tiger interactions are well documented in the Russian region of Sikhote-Alin, where until the beginning of the 20th century, very few wolves were sighted, increasing only after tigers were largely eliminated during the Russian colonization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was corroborated by native inhabitants claiming that they had no memory of wolves until the 1930s, when tiger numbers decreased.Today, wolves are considered scarce in tiger habitat, being found in scattered pockets, and usually seen travelling as loners or in small groups. First hand accounts on interactions between the two species indicate that tigers occasionally chase wolves from their kills, while wolves will scavenge from tiger kills. Tigers are not known to prey on wolves, though there are four records of tigers killing wolves without consuming them.Recently released tigers are also said to hunt wolves. This competitive exclusion of wolves by tigers has been used by Russian conservationists to convince hunters in the Far East to tolerate the big cats, as they limit ungulate populations less than wolves, and are effective in controlling wolf numbers. In India, wolves highly avoid a direct confrontation with tigers, since the cat is bigger, stronger and likelier to land one powerful paw-swipe to end the canine’s life. Once, in March 2000, a young male tiger was roaming the forest of Bandhavgarh National Park when it came across a couple of Indian wolves, one of which followed it for some distance along the track, provoking the cat to turn around and face its opponent. The tiger was not being aggressive, it simple made the gesture of turning around – but still, it dissuaded the relatively small wolf from getting any closer.

Do wolves deserve the negative portarayl they have recieved in literature?

In general they don't their bad rep.

here's a simplified version of the Romulus and Remus story.

Fenrir not a nice wolf, but Asena seems to have been revered. Maybe anciently, it was male wolves which were seen in the negative?

What evidence do you have that wolves are ruining Yellowstone?

A higher population of wolves is not automatically 'bad' (unless you want to slaughter caribou without putting in the hard work of course).

Research is revealing that wolf reintroduction is slowly changing the balance of the Yellowstone ecosystem: elk no longer casually wander in the open, and the dominance of the coyote has been reduced. Other studies find wolves may also be restoring Yellowstone's natural equilibrium, streamside cottonwood and willow are growing vigorously again in areas overgrazed for much of the last century, aspen trees are surviving winter elk browsing for the first time in decades. Another study shows that a process called "the ecology of fear" is at work, a balance has been restored to an important natural ecosystem, and. Unlike other top predators,
Yellowstone's wolves routinely leave unfinished elk and moose carcasses. These leftovers provide scraps for scavenging coyotes eagles, and other animals.

Wolf controls have been tried in Alaska but without great success; bears, not wolves, were found to be taking the largest share of ungulates. So wolf numbers may, or may not, significantly impact prey numbers in Alaska.

Why do cats run away from me? How do I get close to cats?

We haven’t been domesticating cats for anywhere near as long as we have dogs, and they are much closer to their wildcat cousins than dogs are to wolves. We haven’t needed to, and the reason is simple - compared to cats and wildcats, in a real fight, we physically outmatch them almost totally, unlike with wolves and larger dogs.Cats know this, they know they are no match for us, and so they are naturally scared of us. If a bigger animal came running up to you, you’d run away too.But most cats also know that some humans are sources of good things. Two examples of approaches that can work are:be in the cats presence and ignore it, and maybe it’ll think you’re no threat and that coming up to you was its idea, orif you really want to approach the cat, crouch down to be as non-threatening as possible, and slowly present your outstretched pinky finger on your outstretched arm for the cat to smell, letting it make the final move to do so. this is reasonably non-threatening, is unlikely to provoke fight or flight, and gives the cat a chance to evaluate you - sniffing is a part of their getting-to-know-you routineThere’s still a good chance the cat won’t trust you, and will just leave, but different cats have different personalities and like humans some are going to be more friendly and trusting than others, and some are going to be having a bad day.I have approached many unfamiliar cats before successfully, both inside and outside of houses, and I know - you can’t win them all - don’t try.
