What is the theme and thesis for the poem planting a sequoia?
I am supposed to write a commentary on this poem, here is the poem : All afternoon my brothers and I have worked in the orchard, Digging this hole, laying you into it, carefully packing the soil. Rain blackened the horizon, but cold winds kept it over the Pacific, And the sky above us stayed the dull gray Of an old year coming to an end. In Sicily a father plants a tree to celebrate his first son’s birth– An olive or a fig tree–a sign that the earth has one more life to bear. I would have done the same, proudly laying new stock into my father’s orchard, A green sapling rising among the twisted apple boughs, A promise of new fruit in other autumns. But today we kneel in the cold planting you, our native giant, Defying the practical custom of our fathers, Wrapping in your roots a lock of hair, a piece of an infant’s birth cord, All that remains above earth of a first-born son, A few stray atoms brought back to the elements.
Removing Pine Needles?
MASTER GARDENER.... jealous! Wow! I would kill for what you want to toss out! You are very lucky. DON'T do anything. What you see is just what Mother Nature wanted you to do. We had beautiful green pine forests since time begain. No one raked up the needles then & noone need rake them now. As for the spiders, thats great. They are protecting the trees from all the nasty bugs that want to move in and suck the life out of your trees. Spiders love a good bug lunch! Remove the needles & put down red shreaded bark. Ohh you are pulling the old Doctor's leg, right? That would really be bad. Under those layers of needles is a layer of tree roots, almost like a thick carpet if right at surface. The needles have been good to those roots. Keeping the soil ph with just the right amount of acid. Protecting from heat & cold, keeping in the moisture they need. It' a happy place, a healthy place. Red shreaded bark. The bark is going to start taking from your trees. As it breaks down it will start robbing the nitrogen from the soil. The bark will not be a nice blanket for the surface roots. More like a mesh blanket. Moisture can get out, nasty grubs & other creepy root munching things too. Hot, dry air will get thru and dry out the roots. You will need to water the trees to replace the moisture loss. If you don't water, the trees will become stressed. Weak trees get attacted by bark beetles and other boring insects. They weaken the tree even more. Before you know it you're paying some dud with a chain saw to cut down your dead pine trees. I've seen it happen... many times. I think you should rethink your plan. Pros vs Cons. As someone who deals with nature every day, I see only the Pros. LOTS of them. But it's up to you? I just want to leave you with this thought........ . If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
It's very difficult for me to regret my own mistakes because I have learned from them but there is one in particular regret that no matter what anybody tries to tell me to make things better, I simply can't come to terms with.When I was 5 years old I was sexually abused my cousin. It went on for a while until he moved to another state. Years went by and I never said a word to anybody about it until I was 17 years old.Fast forward I graduated high school and joined the military right away. I rarely visited home but one of the days I did, my sister told me to not mention anything to anybody but that when I was on deployment my younger brother had came forward with some terrible news.My sister said that my brother told my mom that my cousin had sexually abused him. Yes, the same cousin who abused me.I asked her when it had happened and he said it was right before my cousin left to live at another state. At that moment, my heart broke. If only I had said something to someone about the sexual abuse that was being done to me my brother wouldn't have suffered.My brother suffered a lot but we didn't know what was wrong. He never said a word to anybody about anything. Now we know why and if I would have said something, he wouldn't have been abused.I've learned to accept that it wasn't my fault but it's still something that when I think about it, it breaks me down.
