I Shorted Out A Circuit And Now The Power Stays

I think I might have short circuited my garage door opener. Need help to determine if opener is a goner.?

Oops! I have done the same thing more than once. Was the circuit board still plugged into the wiring harness? If it was you probably shorted the board to the metal case or framework of the opener. The three relays and the transformer are the only 120V parts. Everything else is low voltage. With the opener unplugged (haha) look at the rear of the board. (the exposed side) examine the traces on it. The ones in question are on the right side as you hold the board looking at it with the wire harness side up. The burnt trace(s) are easy to see. The solder and the copper it is on vaporizes when shorted. If you repair the defect(s) with a soldering iron and a bit of thin copper wire the opener will be OK most of the time. The other components come through intact because the hot (black) is shorting to ground (green) usually leaving the other stuff undamaged. I imagine you got a flash/pop or both. The repair should be neat. Invite a electronically oriented friend over if you cannot solder. (pencil iron, not a gun type) Email me a picture if you cannot find the defect or if you need more help. Make sure to test the safety reverse after you are finished as per factory manual. The safety reverse should be set as light as possible and still run the door. Many door people just change the board, and I cannot fault them but I am old school. And now that I think about it if the thing is dead and you have no green or amber lights on your safety beams you probably burnt the hot lead (black) going to the 120V side of the transformer. I think that side is the one nearest the pins for the wiring harness.

Is there a short circuit in my car?

well first to see if it is a short when you shut your car off for the night un hook the negative batter cable then when you go to start it hook it back up if the car don't start i would say it is your battery if it starts you have a short circuit.. if you have any add on's like a amp for a radio make sure it is shut off with the key or any thing else you might have just hooked up.now how to find it that is a hard thing to do a friend of mine worked on my truck for over a week to find one in my truck. he had a test light and a volt meter

Shorted resistor and result of shorted resistor?

The problem in question: https://www.physicsbrain.com/images/content/EM/10/h10_realbatteryF.png

Originally, R2 wasn't shorted (https://www.physicsbrain.com/images/content/EM/10/h10_realbatteryA.png)

Resistor R2 is now shorted out as shown. How does the magnitude of the voltage across the battery change?

A) V_battery decreases
B) V_battery increases
C) V_battery remains the same

I'm confused, I tried to think of a situation where there is only 1 resistor in a circuit and what would happen if that is shorted. Since V=IR, then V would be zero in the circuit??? If so, then I would think that the voltage across the battery would decrease (in the original question).

Thanks for any help or hints.

Circuit breaker keeps tripping after storm?

Wait until tomorrow, then try the circuit again. The probable cause is water in an exterior receptacle, If you can locate it, remove the cover and dry the unit with an air supply. A vacuum cleaner or air compressor will do the job. Since the breaker is off, it is safe to work. I suggest that a GFCI outlet be installed in that circuit. Do verify that any circuit or outlet that will inspect is off. If the problem persists, call a qualified professional electrician. One other possibilty is a bad breaker. Most likely the problem is water.

Why is my septic tank blowing the circuit breaker in the fuse box?

Septic pump systems are quite common in rural areas where I live (WA State). I doubt that you are trying to be funny (as suggested by someone else).

Just letting things dry out will likely not fix your problem (or at least not for very long). You need an electrician to open the junction box and check the connections. A common mistake (even by some electricians) is to use standard wirenut connectors. You should have Silicone-filled wirenut connectors that are rated for that use. (No, filling a standard wirenut with silicone is not correct.)

If you attempt this yourself, please make sure that all power is off. If you have a control box for the septic system, be aware that most systems have two circuits (a pump circuit and an alarm circuit).

One circuit breaker won't reset after lightning (replaced the circuit breaker already)?

First unplug everything on that circuit and see if the short is still there. If so it is in your wiring or an outlet actually shorted. Go to each outlet on that breaker and inspect and ohm for shorts. Work you way back until you isolate the problem then replace or repair the problem. It could be where the wire enters the outlet box, so inspect there also. Don't forget to inspect in the breaker box itself. Also check if there are any light fixtures on that circuit. Good luck.

Why do circuit breakers trip when lightning strikes?

Lightning often strikes power lines, or the protective ground wires above transmission lines. The power company uses special protective devices, called arresters, to safely divert abnormally high voltages to ground before they can cause damage to the power company's equipment. However, the high currents and fast rise-time of some lightning strikes can sometimes result in temporary flashovers of the insulators that normally insulate and support the power lines from grounded poles and towers.Once an electrical arc jumps across the insulator, the electrical power in the lines now has a shorter path (a "short circuit") to ground or to other nearby power (or "phase") lines. The power company uses protective relays that can detect the abnormal current flowing to ground or between phases. The protection relay commands a high-voltage circuit breaker to temporarily remove power to the affected line. Once power is removed, the electrical arc stops, the air recovers its insulating properties, and the short circuit disappears. The protection relay then commands the circuit breaker to reclose a short time later, and normal power delivery is resumed. Downstream customers only see a short loss of power during the time the breaker is open.Sometimes lightning hits a nearby tree, causing a limb to contact a power line, resulting in a short-circuit to ground. As before, the arcing fault is sensed and the circuit breaker is opened briefly, and the breaker then reclosed a short time later. However, when the breaker recloses, if the short circuit is still there, the protection relay will again cause the breaker to open, this time for a somewhat longer period of time. This sequence of opening and reclosing may continue several times, but after a fixed number of retries (set by the power company), the breaker will automatically lock in the "open" position, removing power from that circuit until linemen can remove the problem and manually reset the circuit breaker. In this case, downstream customers will experience an extended power outage.

If I short the input and output terminals of a power bank, like shown in the picture, what will happen?

It is not called as short circuit but something else. Most of the power banks use batteries like 18650 and so on and these batteries have only one cathode and one anode. So at the battery level there is no simultaneous charging and discharging. Output circuit boosts voltage from 3.7V to 5V at the cost of decreasing current and there will be some losses also. If you connect as shown in picture, then the output electricity will enter the charging circuit. This one being 5V will start charging of the battery and battery will no more output any current . Apart from charging the battery, this 5V current gets boosted to higher volt depending on the circuit, but again there is a decrease in current. So every cycle part of the current goes to battery and the other part is decrease by boost circuit and renters the charging circuit. So it decays away.Note:This is true only if there is some capacitor in the boost to have some stored charges by the time the battery stops giving current. Otherwise the there will be no cycling of current as it shuts of instantly.Common power bank available these days mostly do not support charging while discharging. So this will not happen.Suppose if the battery contains two anodes and two cathodes, then one pair may be used for charging and another pair for discharging. In this case, rate of discharging will be higher than rate of charging and hence battery will discharge completely. Remember the decrease in current in a boost circuit.

Why does power or electricity go off when it rains?

It's fair that we haven't electricity in rain because of outdated system it's okay but when there's no rain and we got no electricity then It's unfair. It's too bad.Let me tell you the current situation of electricity in my province kpk. When there's no Rain. Here in my province there are 4/24 hours electricity, when there's no rain. The whole day People only talks and thinks about electricity. They chat each other likePerson 1. “ OH what happens to the electricity last night?”P2. The transformer got down.”P3. Oh our water tank wasn't hot. So I took shower with cold water” (in winter)When there's rain. When it's raining then there's no electricity in my prevince kpk. I means 0/24 hours electricity. No electricity. Because of the outdated system. We have four hours electricity out of 24 in a common days. But sometimes in these 4 hours, we lost the 4 hours electricity as well because of our old and demage transformer. It has some major problems. It's funny. Keep reading! If a foreigner visit to our country then he/she will learn these two sentences as soon as possible. Because people only talk about electricity.Bajli Lara ow Bajli Raghla (بجلی گھی اور بجلی اگی) in English ( Electricity goes off and On).Sometimes it's blinking! I mean goos off and on. We have so much fun.I have some Questions, please upvote the answer that hit the PM chair as soon as possible? When will come the nya pakistan rules to our poor province? There are a lot of problems that we're facing in our province kpk, So I request the PM to take an action? The government education is weak in our province compare to private education, so try to improve it?In rains we can't drive bike, cars on the roads because of the Bad drainage? So please take an action dear pm?People play hid and seek in the poles!Thank you for your precious support!

My car won't start after metal touching positive post and it smoked. Could it just be the battery or something else?

First check all your fuse’s , yes every last one of them , most cars have a large fuse panel under the hood as well as in the passenger compartment, An then you also have what's called a “ Fusible Link “ , These are normally located going to High Amp Circuits , in your car , i.e. The starter , the alt , the fuse panels , Modern Cars have dozens of these Fusible Links , An they have different ratings that depends on the wire size going to that Component ( I think there are about 6 different gauges / sizes ). What happens when in your case a Direct Short , occurs it protects the wiring An various other electric components in your car ,, they melt down when large amounts of current pass thru them , most are covered in a Fire Resistance shrink tubing type material, An they are soldered on to the wiring of the various components , So grab your self a VOM Tester , or a Test Light use one for Computer Circuits - The VOM Meter would be a better choice , An starting looking for where there is no power where there should be power going , There's a old joke We Mechanics have - wires carry smoke thru them An when you let the smoke out there no good anymore, Good Luck , An hey don't let anymore smoke outta them wires , oh An if you find out it is a fusible link - don't let the Clown at the parts store try An sell you a 25 foot roll of it , tell them you only need like a foot ( 12 inches ) of it OK , An if they tell you otherwise go to another parts store as they are idiots ,
