I Think I May Need Jaw Realignment Surgery

Jaw realignment / Cost?

My lower jaw is back farther than where it should be. My previous dentist informed me that if I chose to have my jaw realigned that my jaw could be cracked, moved forward, and then stapled, and that it take about three weeks to heal. I don't have any discomfort whatsoever so it does not matter to me whether I live my life with my jaw where it shouldn't be. However, I have since moved and now have a new dentist that stresses how important it would be to have my jaw realigned and to have braces put on. He went through the whole, this and this and this could happen, or it couldn't. The joints could become a problem with age and so and so.

I really don't have the money to pay for realignment and braces, but I am curious as to how much it would cost to have the realignment done, and the braces. Would it be some serious cha-ching dollars?

Thank you!

My jaw is out of alignment please help?

Interesting. Misaligned jaws are not uncommon. You say it is healed and you now have a crooked jaw. It hasn't 'healed' if you have a crooked jaw, it may have stopped hurting. I would suggest that you would only need surgery if your muscles had 'healed' in a wrong position and so prevent any realignment of the jaw bone. In that case the surgery is for the muscles not really the bone (unless some bone has broken?).

I take it that you may have already tried manipulating your jaw with or without the assistance of medical or sport professionals? I mean, you extend your jaw straight out and down then slowly bring it back into its correct socket position. The jaw is not a fixture; it simply fits into a socket area and can easily come loose. This manipulation of your jaw may take many attempts, and have some pain, but it is an ordinary fixing for an ordinary problem.

If your case is severe then it should be obviously so from X-rays. Sporting medics, such as those treating boxers would have seen your problem before. Perhaps you should see such a qualified person before choosing surgery. Surgery has its own dangers and is a step to consider after other methods have failed.

Always keep your teeth shut when boxing so an impact won't shift your jaw. Also never turn your head away from your opponent, keep your eyes on him. I mean, do not turn your head to the side, as, if your are hit in the jaw with your head side-on your neck and head no longer have any give and a blow then to the jaw can break the jaw. This is an easy knock out, if you can hit just to turn his head then immediately hit again the side of the jaw before his head can come back, and its lights out for your opponent. A mafia double tap, instead of bullets you use punches.

If you have been through an orthognathic (jaw misalignment) surgery, what was your experience? My teenager may need this and I am interested in a first-hand perspective.

I will paste an an answer that I just providedIt is like nothing you’ve ever experienced and nothing you can really prepare for. Going in even if you know all of the risks, it is still Difficult to prepare for. It also depends on the type of Jaw surgery you’re having and why you’re having it.I have an entire vlog series about my experience and if you do research you will soon realize how much info is available. It would have been helpful for me if I found some of this before mine.Double Jaw Advancement Surgery - MMA for Obstructive Sleep Apnea - YouTube

Could you realign your jaw at home without braces or surgery?

There are no DIY jaw alignment procedures. But think about what you are asking for a minute so we can break it down. You already know that non-DIY jaw alignment involves surgery and orthodontics. That’s good. Let’s look at that a bit more closely to see if you could replicate this at home. The surgical part of the process is done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Someone with four years of dentistry, an internship, a residency in OMFS plus experience in jaw surgery. Usually done in hospital under general anaesthetic. Don’t forget the surgical assistant, nurses, anesthetist, and everything else required to pull this off effectively and safely. The surgery part of the process moves the position of the upper and lower jaws. One jaw or more commonly a combination of moving both the upper and lower jaw. In two jaw surgery, your upper jaw is detached, moved and re-attached. Your lower jaw is split, moved and re-attached.The orthodontics part is done by an orthodontist who has four years of dental school, an internship, and two to three years of orthodontics training. They utilize fixed and removable appliances that apply directed biomechanics forces to predictable move teeth. So what you are really asking is can I, a lay-person, realign my jaws at home even though I know the only way to do it is with a major surgical procedure followed by at least two years of orthodontics delivered by two separate specialists with more than 15 years of combined training plus practical experience post-graduation?That should confirm the answer is no both from the perspective of the practicality of jaw realignment in the absence of surgical/orthodontic options and your lack of ability to do dentistry because you are not a dentist.

What is the cost of a jaw surgery in India?

The cost of a corrective jaw surgery in India can vary from 1500 USD to 2300 USD and would vary depending on the following:Type of jaw surgery performedThe hospitalThe SurgeonJaw surgery is also known as Orthognathic surgery where orthos mean “to straighten” and gnathic means “related to the jaw”. Either the upper part of the jaw called maxilla and the lower part of the jaw called mandible or the chin may need surgery for various reasons. Mostly it would be a corrective surgery that would be needed. Most common cases would be for correcting:Protruding maxilla or mandibleCrossbite or open bite or jaw closure issuesReceding lower jawRepair facial injuries due to accidents or congenital conditionsObstructive sleep apnea correction. The surgery is generally advised at an age after growth stops i.e. between 14 to 21 years and after. A jaw surgery may be performed either on the upper jaw, lower jaw, chin or any of combination of these.According to the location of the surgery, it is classified as follows:Maxillary Osteotomy (Upper Jaw): Mainly for receded upper jaw, crossbite or too many or too few teeth showing, open bite etc.Mandibular Osteotomy (Lower Jaw): This addresses the issue of a receded lower jaw.Genioplasty (Chin): This surgery is performed when the chin needs a correction, mostly in cases where there is a deficient chin. This is one of the smallest procedures among the orthognathic surgeries. Most of the time this condition accompanies a severely receded lower jaw.In cases where a jaw surgery has required the doctors mostly advice braces before proceeding with the procedure which might need 9-18 months before advising on surgery. In effect, a jaw surgery can take up to 2 years to complete and achieve the desired outcomeSome of the best hospitals for jaw surgery in India are:Rajan Dental, ChennaiDr. Rajkrishnan Dental Clinic, CochinChisel Dental Clinic, BangaloreKailash Dental Clinic, TrivandrumA customized treatment plan for an orthognathic surgery from any of the hospitals mentioned above.RegardsAnjana

Can you wear undies and a bra during Orthognathic (jaw) surgery?

Bra probably, undies no. If they ask you to remove your undies there is something wrong because they shouldn't be going anywhere near that area. You will need your bra off because you will have devices attached to your chest and back to monitor your vital signs. Good luck.

My jaw has been misaligned for two weeks, can it realign on it’s own?

Jaws don’t normally become misaligned. The only possibility I can think of is a tempromandibular joint problem. The cartilage in the joint might might be out of place. This situation is very painful, something you did not mention.I recommend you make an appointment with your dentist and find out what is happening.

Why is it necessary to get jaw surgery if you have an underdeveloped upper jaw?

This depends on the severity of your underbite. If you have to work to close your lips (ie lip incompetence), and at rest your mouth is open, then your risk of decay, xerostomia (dry mouth) and periodontal disease is higher. This is usually the case with a discrepancy of at least 5mm but may be even less depending on other factors. This distance is measured (in the case of maxillary deficiency) from the midline of the incisal edge of the lower incisors back to the midline of the maxillary teeth. Confusing, I know. Basically, if you have lip incompetence, it probably requires surgical correction. The best thing to do if you think you may need jaw surgery, is to see an Orthodontist for an evaluation. They will give you treatment options, including camauflage if your upper and lower jaw discrepancy is minimal. The last thing I will tell you is that if you are maxillary deficient (ie your lower teeth are in front of your upper ones), you need to wait until growth is complete before undergoing surgical correction with a LeFort Advancement. My LeFort patients are almost always over 18 years old. Older if I determine they are still growing. This is not always the case with my BSSO (lower jaw) surgery patients who may be slightly younger depending on the angle of their lower jaw. Again, my recommendation is a consult from an Orthodontist who will then send you to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon for evaluation and surgical correction of your jaw discrepancy. Hope this helps.

Should I have a lower jaw surgery?

I think I’m qualified to answer this becauseI’m a dentist.I was an ideal candidate for a Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for mandibular advancement.(I didn’t go through with it because of financial constraints).I have to ask. Why do you want to get jaw surgery done?Did your orthodontist say that you really need it? If so, whats the severity of your malocclusion? Are there any conservative treatment modality that is a less than ideal alternative to jaw surgery.Does your lower jaw protrude past your upper jaw (Angle’s class 3, skeletal)? Or does your lower jaw look like its smaller compared to your face(Angle’s class 2 ,skeletal)?Jaw surgery in indicated when there is an excess or deficient growth in one or both of the jaw in an adult. When is it required? If there is a skeletal discrepancy and just braces wont correct your bite perfectly. Both the teeth and the jaw need to be corrected and hence, surgery is ideal.Your face would look better with the surgery that with just braces.Often like with severe skeletal class 3, surgery is the only and ideal treatment option for under bite correction and would provide an ideal bite and restore proper functionSurgery may also be indicated for treatment of Obstructive sleep apnea .Surgery does have its fair share of risks, likeInfection.Numbness after surgery due to damage or compression of the nerve. It is usually temporary but there is a risk of permanent numbness but usually for a small area of the jaw and skin. The risks of being under General Anesthesia.Damage to healthy teeth in the vicinity of the split etc.Very rarely pseudrarthrosis.Your orthodontist and Maxillofacial surgeon will inform you of all of these and more. They will suggest alternatives if its possible, like pseudo advancement with functional appliances or camouflage treatment. But when the decision comes down to you, ask your self-Am I okay with the complications/ morbidities associated, if any occur?Do I want to under go surgery for function or for aesthetics? Can I live without having it?And can I afford it?Please consult with your orthodontist and family before you decide. Seek a second opinion if you are unsure. Please correct me if have stated anything wrong in the above answer.
