I Think I Might Be Going Blind Help

I think my hamster is blind or going blind? Help!!!?

She's kept her eye closed for almost 2 days now. I googled what it could be and it said she might've scratched her eye with her nail and to wash it, so a couple minutes ago I did it, then she started to open her eye a little and it was white!!! It was so gross I almost threw up...so I'm guessing she went blind in that eye? I also think she has a tumor because under her arm is a huge lump that she kicks everytime she walks. Plus one of her eyes has always been abnormally bigger. Like twice the normal size. She's relatively old. She's two years old. I wanted to know if she's dying and if she may be blind in her eye? Also if any of these things may be causing her pain. If they are, how much would it cost to put her down? I can not pay for a vet because it's too much. Any help appreciated!
Any experts? I need more help! Email me at dndavis98@sbcglobal.net

My mom who is 77 is going blind. How do I help her?

You need to be calm and very patient with her. You need to keep aside some of your time for her and let this be part of your day to day schedule. You need to clear all the clutter and unwanted things from her room making it easy for her to move around even without your help. Once she gets an idea of the room, she will be able to picture it in her mind and move accordingly. Yes she will adapt to her conditions, you just have to be patient. Arrange the room as per her convenience and try to fix a bell or an emergency button near to her bedside so that if there is any emergency she can get your attention. Keep some water and some snacks in a plastic container which is easily accessible to her. So whenever she is thirsty or wants a quick snack she can grab it by herself. You will have to assist her to the washroom and slowly position things in a way that once she reaches the washroom she can take care of the rest. Always make sure that the washroom is clean, it should not be slippery. If possible try to install tiles which are anti slippery. Whenever you meet her discuss all the things happening throughout your life, make her feel involved with all the matters happening in your home. Talk to your family members and ask them to do the same so that she never feel lonely. Provide her with a radio, it can release her boredom, at least a little bit. Touch, sensation and hearing will be her eyes for the coming days, help her to feel things and understand. If she complains of something make sure you take a good look at it because sometimes their senses can see better than our eyes.Stay strong my friend, be patient and stay by her side. Adaptation is one of best human strength. She will overcome this hardship and so will you. And then things will come back to normal. Just be there for her that’s all that matters.

My friend is deaf and going blind. How can I help support her?

I am sorry to hear about your friend, and it is admirable that you want to help her.I suggest contacting one of the groups for Usher Syndrome, introducing her to them, and seeking their advice.Usher syndromeUsher Syndrome Society : Events : Shine A Light on Usher Syndrome CampaignYou could perhaps, if you wished, learn braille and sign language. ‘Deaf’ does not always mean completely deaf, and a blind person may have some residual vision, so your efforts to communicate will still be helpful. You could, if you wished, learn to walk linked arm-in -arm and at the same pace, following the rules that blind people follow. This always looks better than towing someone along by the wrist or hand. You could ask her about whether readability could be improved for her, and if so, you could photocopy documents for her to give a magnified print size. Black and white contrast is usually advised for people with visual disability, but it is best to ask her before assuming this. Most importantly though I think is being a friend to her at this difficult time, being someone who can talk about it if she wants to talk, and otherwise help her to maintain as much of a regular, normal social life as she can manage. Please, though, contact one of the Usher Syndrome groups and discuss this with them, they are the most experienced people for this disability and they will know how best to advise you and your friend.

I might go blind in 10 years, what can I do to stop worrying?

I was told I could possibly go blind in 10 years about 8 years ago, So I know how it feels. It’s shocking, it’s frustrating, it’s aggravating, it’s confusing, it’s scary, it’s depressing, but it’s not the end. When a person is able to see since birth and starts losing vision later in life, it gets all the way more difficult to accept it, because firstly that person has to live with the fear of going blind and then actually live as a blind person for the rest of their life. The best thing one can do in this particular situation is to stop worrying and start planningYou can start by learning how to be blind. Focus on your communication skills, focus on learning new languages so you can communicate with more people. Start learning Braille. I understand it’s easier to read on the computer by using a screen reader but it is equally important to be able to really read, Braille will make that happen and you don’t have to worry about the lights going out, you can still read!Focus on building a career which will not be affected even after you go blind, that will help you to be financially independent. The phase between having little sight and going completely blind is tricky, make the most of it. Travel as much as you can, make memories and learn from your experiences, it will help you grow both personally and socially.Basically, stop worrying and recognise your abilities rather than focusing on one disability.
