I Think My Guinea Pig Has A Respitory Infection

Guinea pig upper respiratory infection home cures?

There is no cure for an upper respiratory infection other than intervention y the correct antibiotic. What do you mean taking him to a vet is out of the question, what kind of pet owner are you. If you chose to put an animal in a cage you only do so if you are capable of taking proper care of it and vet care is part of the picture. Animals are not just for the fun times they are a commitment for the worst and the best.

Not having money is not an excuse, have an yard sale, i have had to do so more than once when a guinea pig fell ill when it was not a financially good time for me. I never missed a thing i sold to care for them either as i knew i had provided the best possible care for them.

Upper respiratory infections are not to be taken lightly in a guinea pig. I just completed treatment for my little Hoshi, we found him ill in a pet store so we purchased him so he would get proper medical care. It took 8 weeks for him to totally kick the sneezes, he was a sick little boy.
So please be responsible and get him to a vet asap.

Does cigarette smoke cause upper respiratory infection in guinea pigs?

Absoutly all of above and many more. Guinea pigs can get an URI if you are cooking and burn a pan before you put the oil in, the fums form the hot metals will cause an URI. That is just one example of the simple things in the house that people never think about that will cause your guinea pig to get an URI. most sented soaps if they have to lie on fabric that has been laundered in them will also cause an URI. Guinea pigs are actually quite sensitive when it comes to inhaling anything but straight air.

Can a guinea pig survive a upper respiratory infection without antibiotics?

I have a guinea pig that I am almost sure has a URI. Unfortunately, I am unable to get antibiotics for her (won't go into details, it's complicated). I realize that realistically she won't survive this, but is there a chance of her surviving this at all? If yes, what are ways to improve this chance? RIght now I'm keeping her warm, giving her vegetables often, and making sure she has plenty of food and water.

How long does it take for a guinea pig to recover from a URI?

My guinea pig that had an upper respiratory infection and it was not a bad one all he was doing was sneezing, took 8 weeks for the sneezing to completely stop. What is hard with guinea pigs is finding the antibiotic that will kill the bacteria and not the guinea pig. We had to go through more then one to finally find the one that would completely stop the sneezing. He would go for 3 to 4 days then start to sneeze again, then it would work to to 5 to 6 days, and finally he just stopped all together. They have to be sneeze free for 2 weeks before they are considered well. Good luck with your baby.

Guinea Pig breathing hard and fast?

EMERGENCY EMERGENCY EMERGENCY

Do NOT wait until Saturday, this needs urgent attention. It could turn to pneumonia if it hasn't already. I don't know what time of day it is where you are, but get your GF's GP to an exotics vet RIGHT NOW. If it is outside normal consulting hours, get on to the emergency service, or find a vet that has out of hours emergency consultations. Ideally you want to see an exotics vet. If you see an "ordinary" vet, make them check the guinea lynx website, or print off the list of dangerous medications yourself and take it with you.

There could be a build up of fluid in the lungs, or around the lungs; either makes breathing difficult. She will be going off her food becaue breathing takes priority.

DO NOT give you GF's GP the antibiotic that another answer mentioned - that could kill her. GPs are very sensitive to antibiotics as they can kill the good gut bacteria and leave the bad ones to flourish and this is alost always fatal. The antibiotic recommended is one of the one to AVOID. See the guinea lynx website for a full list.

The only thing you can do to make sure she is OK until Saturday is to get her to a vet right now. If there is fluid in the chest cavity, the vet will be able to draw this off with a needle. She might need diuretics to prevent the fluid from building up again. You don't say how old the piggy is; it could be a heart problem causing a build up of fluid (that's why you can get a clicking sound). It might be that it is a respiratory infection. The answer is still the same - vet - now.

Please don't delay, your piggy needs you to take her to the vet NOW!
Saturday might well be too late. If she is struggling to breathe now, the vet might put her in an oxygen tank to make breathing easier for her, and then take X-rays. This isn't something you can do yourself, so you really really need to take her to the vet.

I think you can see there is a pattern to this and some of the other answers:

VET - RIGHT NOW!

How do you treat a guinea pig bite?

If the recipient of the bite is a human:Wash with soap, dry, put on a topical antibiotic (for example, neosporin, but anything you’d use for a minor scratch), and cover with bandage (assuming it broke the skin). If the recipient of the bite is a guinea pig or other small animal:Assess the severity of the bite and the location of it. If it looks like a scratch that broke the skin and isn’t on an area of the guinea pig that would get dirty (like on their belly or something), wash it gently. Only use a disinfectant that is safe for guinea pigs, such as Chlorhexidine (refer to Antiseptic Solutions for more options/info). Keep an eye on it and contact a vet immediately if it appears to be getting infected (redness, heat in the area, swelling, any abnormal color changes). You can’t really put a bandage on a guinea pig, and minor surface wounds tend to heal better if they’re exposed to air.If it is on an area of the guinea pig that would get dirty, consider taking it to a vet for advice on protecting the wound and for a safe cream to put on it (and keep the cage extra super clean!). I’ve heard neosporin is ok for guinea pigs, but I’d use it sparingly as they may ingest some of it while cleaning. If the bite is actively bleeding or there’s skin that’s hanging by a flap, I’d go to the vet. The guinea pig may need stitches and a vet will be able to clean it much more effectively than you would. They can also give you advice on how to protect the wound. The deeper a wound, the easier it is to get infected.

How do I cure my guinea pig's wheezing?

Any respiratory distress in a guinea pig should be treated by a vet. If it were my guinea pig I would also eliminate any kind of respiratory irritants. I hated wood shavings for bedding because of dust. Paper bedding is better, but still has a little dust. Fleece cage liners, with paper towels underneath, are the best in my opinion. Also avoid candles, wax warmers, air fresheners, people smoking, etc.It is also very important to make sure your guinea pig’s cage is in a place that is not drafty. It should not be near a door or window that is ever left open, and it should not be near a heat and air conditioning register. If there is an unavoidable draft, you could get a piece of fleece and place it over one end of the cage, on the side where the draft is coming from. The fleece should cover about a quarter of the cage including the top and three sides.Never cover the cage completely. Good ventilation is necessary. The idea is to create a small covered area on one end of the cage to protect from drafts and to make the guinea pig feel more protected and secure. Also make sure that he or she has a sleeping house, preferably a wooden one or a dark plastic one. Clear or light colored houses do not make them feel protected. Emotional problems can cause illness. Give your guinea pig plenty of cuddles! It is also very important to make sure that your guinea pig has a lot of fresh lettuce. Fresh food is part of their natural diet. Iceberg lettuce is low in nutrition, but romaine, butter lettuce, red leaf lettuce, “spring mix,” plus small amounts of spinach, radicchio, etc., are all excellent. Beware of dark leafy greens that are usually cooked, such as kale or chard. Baby kale is OK in small amounts, but lettuce is the main thing. Avoid cabbage and cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower because they can cause fatal gas attacks. I used to think these were OK until I read about “bloat.”Your guinea pig also could have an infection such as Bordatella. This is very serious and requires antibiotics. It is very important to have him seen by a vet as soon as possible to find out what is going on.
