I Tried To Do A Check Disk Defragment And Clean Disk And Had Problems

My computer won't let me let me run Scan Disk or Defrag. Please help me?

Previous answers have advised you to go into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as the pc boots up. I'd just like to add a bit here.
Once in Safe Mode, click on Start, then Run, then type in "CMD" (without the quotes) and hit Enter. That will give you a command line. At that line, type in "CHKDSK /F" (again, without the quotes). That runs the Check Disk utility, and the F instructs the utility to fix any problems with the disk.
When that's done, and while still in Safe Mode, then do a Defrag of the drive. When that's done, reboot into regular Windows again. That should fix the problem. Good luck.

Why won't my disk defragmenter analyze past 25%?

It might be having trouble with some disk corruption. I suggest you run chkdsk first to clear things up.

In general, running chkdsk on C: is a little tricky, because it can’t fix anything (with XP and probably Vista) while the operating system is running. It has to be run BEFORE the operating system starts up. Here's what to do:

1. With Windows running, click the Start->Run menu option.
2. Type

cmd

in the text box and press Enter.
3. A black "DOS box" will appear. Enter

chkdsk /f

and press Enter.

4. A message will come up telling you it can't run and asking if it should schedule a run on the next reboot. Answer yes.
5. Restart your machine. Chkdsk will run automatically. It won't run on any subsequent boots unless it's interrupted this time.

Don't expect to be able to read the results. When it finishes, it continues with the boot in about five seconds.

Hope that helps.

Disk Defragmenter not working?

I recently took my hp laptop to a local computer repair shop to fix a problem I was having with my power supply. When I got the laptop back, I tried to run the disk defragmenter and it popped up a message that says "Disk Defragmenter NTFS Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience." This message pops up everytime I try to run it. I took it back to the shop and they said that it wasn't their fault as they didn't do anything with the dd (typical) I have done everything that I know to do and am at a loss. The program needs to run as my comp is getting slower and slower. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

A problem occurred trying to file your report. We apologize for the inconvenience (2).?

Why have a system to report errors when the the system does not work? I can not access my email and receive the message below when I try: A problem occurred trying to file your report. We apologize for the inconvenience (2).

Lately, I have more and more errors and issues with Yahoo Mail. Is it time to move to a new online mail hosting service like gmail?

if anyone has an idea of how I can correct these type of problems please let me know. There appears to be no way to discuss an issue or failure yahoo or that they care to discuss an issue or failure.

oh why have help group send the answers to a non-working email account. Go figure on that one.

Thanks

I ran Disk Defrag, and it's been going for 23 hours?

Okay, first off, I feel stupid, but I didn't know this thing existed. I've been having trouble with my computer recently, so my brother started it in an effort to clean it up (can I just pause here to say it got rid of 90GBs?)

So, in short, I have never, ever done it. The last time it was done was 1/1/2005 - which is at least three years before I had the computer!

So, my question is; what should I do now? I get that it would be long, but going for 23 hours? I can still do stuff, I'm just getting kind of anxious about this.

Computer problem: My computer keeps freezing up and I have to force it to shut down,?

Sounds like a virus for sure. Just because you ran a clean virus check doesn't mean you don't have a virus.
Anti-virus programs can only scan for KNOWN viruses. If a new or unknown virus has made it onto your computer, the scan would not pick it up.

You could can do several things:
1) Try scanning it with other anti-virus program (note: you can only have 1 anti-virus enabled on your computer at a time or there will be huge problems with computer function).

2) Try a Disc Check; Disc Cleanup; and Disc Defragmenter (although I strongly believe it's a virus).

3) Do a System Restore (this may or may not get rid of a virus).

4) Do a System Recovery (this WILL get rid of any/all viruses, BUT it also erases all your files).

Disc cleanup not working?

try running a checkdisk before hand - select the fix options - you'll be advised it could not run, but would you like to run it the next time you boot restart your computer - select yes and when it reboots will take about 20-30 mins to boot up but it will hopefully fix your issue

Does a filled up hard disk slow down your computer?

First and foremost is memory swapping. Windows use Hard disk to swap its memory for working. Over period of single usage these swaps also known as Virtual Memory or Paging File increases and fills up your hard disk space. This will significantly slow down your computer if your hard disk does not have enough space.Fragmentation: If you work on large files doing multiple editing, fragmentation occurs. Hard disks do not store files as one chunk, but instead in clusters. The clusters tail information will provide the location of the next cluster. So in order to load one complete file, the hard disk will have to make several trips on the spindle to locate all the clusters and get the file. Modern OS reduces these fragmentation by providing good buffer spaces for a file (8K or 16K File Allocation Table) . Yet, this is unavoidable. Defragmenting the hard disk will provide some relief. As you fill to 90% of the hard disk, expect the system to slow down. Larger size hard disks have thousands of files which are to be properly indexed. at 90% usage, the memory may not be sufficient to keep all the indices of file and the OS will resort to swapping it in the hard disk itself. Hence larger the hard disk, more space would be required for this. In general we advice when hard disk is at 80% capacity look for archiving, or deleting files or add additional hard disk to ensure smooth operation of the computer.
