I Want A Pet Snake But My Mom Is Afraid Of Snakes. What Do I Do

My son is 12 and wants a snake and I am deathly afraid of them so what should a mother do?

Perhaps it's a good time in your life for you to analyze and discard an unjustified fear..
I was very much afraid of snakes as a child and would go running in the opposite direction as quickly as possible whenever I saw one or thought I saw one.. Even in my early teens I was nervous of them..
But, I figured it was about time to put that fear to rest and got myself a corn snake hatchling. Sure, it was kind of creepy at first, but, now I'm accustomed to snakes and not scared of them at all.. That one has led to several more because I've found that they not only aren't scary, they're also very interesting and many species are very docile and easy to care for. The right species of snake is much easier to care for then a cat or dog, or even a gerbil or hamster.
You'll want to avoid any species that get large, for instance red tails and reticulateds.. But, a small ball python, corn snake, or even a milk snake or kenyan sand boa would be great choices..
Because you're afraid of them, I would recommend getting a baby, though, only buy one that is an established eater. Preferably one that's about 6 months old. Make sure you buy one that is captive bred!
Here's a sampling of cute little ones that may not be a bad choice

They grow from about 3-4 feet long fully grown..

The males in that species tend to only get about a foot long..

Here's some small ball pythons

They stay about the same size as corn snakes..

Of course, before you select any snake, do your research on that species. You'll also want to find out if a local pet store sells frozen mice. Most snake keepers no longer advocate feeding live mice. None of those snake links I listed are mine, I was just linking them to show you what they look like..

My parents still don't understand why I enjoy snakes and I had to wait till I moved out to get my own. I'm hoping one day they will get past their deep-seated fear and hatred for an animal that is mostly harmless.. Granted, there are venomous snakes that would be dangerous to just pick up and hold. There are also really large snakes that shouldn't be handled without someone else there to help. But, the vast majority of snakes are relatively harmless..

I want a pet snake, but my mom is afraid of snakes. what do i do?

Move out and get a job! Then she can't control your actions.

I really want a pet snake but my girlfriend is very much afraid of them, is there anything I can do to help make her less afraid?

Yes, you can.Begin by educating yourself - read, talk to people, refer, go to the library, do whatever it takes to know that a snake will NEVER be your pet. Snakes are incapable of showing you love, returning affection, acting intelligently, fetching, being trained to poo and pee where you want them to…Snakes are for all practical purposes, cold eating and resting machines. Why would you call them pets?Get yourself a domesticated animal instead: dogs, cats, goats, pigs, sheep, cows, horses…whatever. Leave those snakes alone - they belong outdoors. And not in a terrarium.Maybe your girlfriend is right to be scared. You want her to appreciate something that is incapable of returning that feeling.I’ve handled all kinds of snakes and have been part of countless rescue and release programs.

My mom won't let me get a snake! ?

Ok so here's the issue, I REALLY want a snake! Specifically a ball python, corn snake, or milk snake. But my mom doesn't like like snakes. I've wanted one for a long time, and I am indeed educated about snakes and what there habitat should be like. My mom knows I'm educated, and she knows I have the room for one, she is just too scared. How do I make her not so scared of them and make her let me have a snake?

How do i make my parents not afraid of corn snakes?

Hi! Corn snakes are great pets, so I hope your parents come around!

First, although corn snakes are not the most harmless, they are easily the most docile. I mean, compare them to a little brown snake or worm snake...but who would want a flighty little snake like that for a pet? Anyway, they are no danger to humans.

Snakes are escape artists! So i would suggest making sure the snake cannot escape with a locking lid. If the snake gets out, then he/she may be gone forever. I just had my little corn escape (my fault though; i left the lid open), and we found her nearby with a couple of topical scrapes. She is fine now. I would recommend using a Zilla Critter Cage with a sliding door, like this: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=zilla+cri...
The lid slides out, and you can lock it with a little latch in the front as well as two latches in the back. It is a bit expensive, but i got my 40 gallon for sale at Petco for only 60!!!

You can go to Petsmart to handle corns, but keep in mind that corns there are only babies and may be flighty. I'd recommend going to a Reptile Expo and handling some adults and subadults there. Petsmart snakes are generally not the best idea. Once your dad handles a corn and knows how calm and great they are, i see no reason for you not to be allowed a snake!

And I recommend frozen mice. They are TONS cheaper, can be kept in the freezer, and won't bite your snake! Mice/rats can and will harm your snake; they are fighting for their life! Just look up "ball python mouse bite" and you'll see what a mouse can do. In the wild, a snake can escape from a rogue mouse. In captivity, it is confined to a tank and cannot escape.

If you were deathly afraid of snakes.....?

And your fiance knew this... but went ahead and got a snake, would you be really upset with him/her?

I told my fiance that since we're moving in two months, he could get it, but AT THAT TIME. Not before! I don't want to see the dang thing, and I seriously get panic attacks around snakes.

And the part that ticked me off the most, is that he bought it, and took it to his friend's place and didn't tell me about it until after dinner, and when we got to his friend's place last night, he gave me a kiss, told me how beautiful I was, and that he bought the d*** snake.

If you had a phobia, or just plain FEAR of something, would you be upset, like I am??? Or am I over-reacting?

I want a snake but my mom is super scared. HELP!?

Ive always loved snakes and i really want one and ive been wanting one since i was about 7 years old and im 12 now. My parents are divorced so i sort of have two houses. My dad says he doesn't want any pets so the only place i could keep a snake is my moms house. Well she is SUPER scared of snakes and cant even talk about them for too long. She says i cant have one though id take great care of it and go out of my way to make sure she doesn't have to see it. How do I convince my mom to let me have a snake???

My mom wants me to get rid of my pet ball python?

I promised my mom four months ago that I would do whatever she wanted me to do to have a pet ball python

-I pay her 150 dollars every month (I have a part time job)
-keep my snake on the highest shelf in my room
-keep all frozen mice in a separate mini fridge (which I bought myself)
-I pay everything for my snake
-lock my door 24/7 (I had to buy locks)
-remain straight A's in school.

I've done and kept my promises, but now four months later, she wants me to get rid of my pet snake. She never comes to my room, she never even sees him!

What she told me was "You are spending so much electricity on the heat pad and mini fridge. The electricity bill is more than the amount of money I give you"
Which of course, is bs.
"Your brother, father, and me are all terrified of snakes, why do you still keep it?"
Like I said before, no one comes in my room so no one ever sees my pet snake.

I really don't know what my mom wants me to do in order to keep my snake. I obviously can't return it since its four months old now. I love my pet snake so much but my mom simply doesn't let me keep it.
