I Want To Be A Meteorologist

If you want to become a meteorologist..?

what do you have to be really good at, for example this semester in high school < my junior year > I took geography and i found everything very interesting about weather ex: wind, ocean currents, sun, water ( precipitation ), and all the climates pretty interesting and am doing really good but how hard is it to become a meterologist and do you have to be really good at math?

I want to become a meteorologist, how?

Let me understand. You chose a biomedical major for college, and have gone 3/4 through that program. Now, this no longer holds any interest for you. You have discovered something utterly different, meteorology, which now you want to devote yourself to for the rest of your life. You are almost a college graduate, but you have no idea how to learn what meteorology is about, nor where you can study it. Yet you “know” you want to be a meteorologist. So what is this sudden fascination all about? Do you want to be on TV every night, with thousands of people hanging on your words, advising them to wear a raincoat tomorrow? Or the the sunshine will be “fabulous” for their weekend cookout? How can you have come this far in life, and yet have no idea of how to go to a library? Or to use a search engine on a computer? Is your only way to learn about something, to have someone else explain it to you? There are over 130 colleges and universities in the US which provide a bachelor’s degree in meteorology or something equivalent. Plus dozens and dozens which provide Master’s and Doctorates. Almost endless writeup are available, about meteorology as a career. But you are unable to look up any of these on your own?You are asking about a complete change in the direction of your life, abandoning all that what you have studied and now committing your life to an area of work which you know nothing about — except for watching the end of the nightly news on TV. And you are asking complete strangers, who know nothing about you and about whom you know absolutely nothing, to advise you “What should I do?”My advice is that you should grow up. Proposing to make such a radical career shift, at this point, into a field about which you know nothing, is a mark of appalling immaturity. Your inability to obtain even the most basic information on your own, and your willingness to depend on strangers for life-changing advice, reinforces the evidence of your crippling childishness. In my view, you need major counseling. Not the kind that will make you feel more comfortable and secure, but the kind that will slap you about the head and shoulders, and make you wake up about life and maturity. Go for that, and for the time being, quit worrying about changing careers. At this point, no career is going to work out well for you.

How I can become meteorologist?

“Meteorologists usually need a bachelor's degree in atmospheric science or a closely related field that's specific to atmospheric phenomena. Degrees in physics, chemistry, or geo-science may be adequate for certain positions. Aspiring meteorologists may also study:PhysicsChemistryMathComputer ProgrammingSince most graduate programs don't require a bachelor's degree in atmospheric science for admission, degrees in math, physics, and engineering are good preparations for graduate study. Research positions usually require at least a master's degree, though they will often require a doctorate.” See: How to Become a MeteorologistYou can, also, join one of the branches of the armed forces and, if you qualify, they can train you to be a meteorologist.

I want to major in Meteorology in college?

You would be better off going to CMU if you want to major in Meteorology and/or work as a meteorologist. It is the only MI college with the major, meaning, when you graduate (4 year degree) you would have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Meteorology. You would not have to transfer to finish the major, if you went to CMU. After you were done with that degree, you could opt to work as a meteorologist, or, go on to graduate school (Master's Degree or PhD) to study more in depth (like if you wanted to do research or teach, vs. go right into work.)
The CMU website is actually pretty in-depth, but it seems clear that you would graduate in 4 years with a Bachelor's Degree in Meteorology from CMU, without transferring.

I agree with your assessment that the MSU program would not be a degree "IN" meteorology and would not qualify you to work as a meteorologist if that is what you want to do. It looks like your major would be "Earth Science" with a concentration in meteorology and atmospheric studies, and this would enable you to go on to graduate school to the same programs you could with the CMU degree, to get a Master's or PhD in a meteorology graduate program like Penn State, for example, has, if you wanted to study or teach the subject. In fact, it looks like you can be admitted to a graduate program (Master's or PhD program- what you do after college) with very little meteorological background -- the Penn State program says you need: The academic graduate major in meteorology is open to all students with a baccalaureate degee and a strong interest in the atmospheric sciences. A degree in meteorology, science, math, or engineering provides a particularly good background, although we have had some students with liberal arts degrees (such as Arts History) who have done very well in our program. The minimum course requirements for admission are mathematics at least through differential equations and at least one year of physics.

I think if you want to actually "be" and work as, a meteorologist, then CMU is the place for you. If you plan to get an "advanced degree" after 4 years of college, and study meteorology, it doesn't matter which you go to in order to get into a graduate program for that.

I hope this helps!

I want to be a meteorologist but i,m not good at math how can i solve this problem?

Improve your maths. If you are not improving at school, get a tutor (not a tudor, I don't know if Henry VIII was any good at maths but even if he was, he is long dead). You will need maths and physics at the highest level at school because you will have to continue with both at university.

Getting into Meteorology is very competitive. There are far more people wanting to do it than there are jobs available. Employers look for the best and if you don't measure up, you won't make it. Improve your maths.

Can I be a Meteorologist with a Geography Major?

I just wanted to make sure that you could be a Meteorologist with a Geography major, because I was researching on some sites that they mentioned to specifically get a Meteorology Degree for this. So I am kinda scared now because I have already started as a Geography major thinking that I could also be a Meteorologist with this Degree, and my college does not offer Meteorology. Please, if anybody can help me here I would really appreciate it, I just hope that I can still do this.

Thank You
