What do you want from your teacher?

I want my teacher to challenge and support me - both are needed and necessary because I need a teacher to guide and motivate me to continue practicing what I’m learning but also at the same time a teacher who’s honest when I haven’t been practicing or if I’m missing a concept. We need teachers that are encouraging and nurturing but also teachers willing to be honest when a student is underperforming. The honesty is challenging because it requires us to give feedback that will resonate with the student to improve and perform better in school. The hardest part for students is accepting the feedback without taking it personally and seeing it as love and support rather than as criticism. If teachers fail to both support and challenge, then students stay in their comfort zone too much. They’ll get stuck repeating the same mistakes rather than thinking critically and assessing themselves and their strengths to examine how they can improve or master a subject.

My parents don't want me to be a teacher?

its your life not your parents life, if they don't understand what is important for you it's their problem not yours. It's important to respect your parents wishes but it has to go both ways and your parents have to realize that. At the end of the day money and your parents approval won't make you happy, doing what you are passionate about will.

I’m being bullied by my teacher and no one wants to help me. What should I do?

This actually happened to me. First, I told my parents. They are the ones you should ALWAYS be able to talk to. They should ALWAYS have your back. I talked about the situation, they provided me with some suggestions on how to approach the issue. I then dropped the class. I didn’t want to speak with my teacher, as he might treat me even more differently from the rest of the students. I got into the new class and he asked me why. He seemed pretty upset, he was barely containing his anger. I lied and told him I found the class boring, I had already taken the computer portion of the class and it was too repetitive for me. I wanted something new. I never told him the real reason why I dropped the class, it didn’t seem relevant. My advise: change teachers if at all possible. If you can’t do that, talk to your teacher about the issues with a parent. The teacher bullying you might see the severity of the situation if you have a parent/guardian with you. That teacher should change his/her ways. Good luck and I hope things improve!

Why do you want to be an English teacher?

Because I want to change the mentality of people. I wanted to help raise the awareness that learning english can get you somewhere. So innocent back then. Haha Back then I used to think by being an English teacher, I can help students to get out of their current living situation and explore the world.I was right and wrong ( you will know later if you read on).Learning English means that you get to go other countries without worries and people can understand you. Plus, if you score your English paper, the chances of you to get in the university is better, at least in my country. Or so I thought. And so, there I was doing my practical in a public school. I realised that the students don’t want any help. Well, they like their living situation (the place that I taught was full with students whose parents open up businesses). They are the future candidate to take care of their parents shop or whatever. So they think that learning English is not important (heck, learning anyhing is not important to them). They just have to get through school and continue what their parents did. I was surprised with answer. However, I did try to instill some of the good point of learning a language can get them somewhere, not just out of the state. But more to out of the country. However, that and there was another whole mess with the school system got me really thinking about teaching again. I didn’t teach again after. When I finish my degree, I worked in customer service instead. But who knows, in the future maybe I will continue teaching again.

What made you want to become a teacher?

This is a standard interview question for teachers around here. I have a standard answer:“I was told there was a lot of money in teaching and most teachers are rich. I’m beginning to think I was misinformed.”(That’s a joke. It helps bring down the stress levels for everyone in the interview. Then I continue…)“Seriously, though, I’ve been working with children in some capacity since I was 19, and I’ve always enjoyed it. I’ve had jobs that I hated, but none of them involved working with children. I always look forward to the next time I get to go to work in those cases.“I also enjoy spending time with my own children. Teaching offers a great work/life balance, and that’s important to me. Kids are only young once, right? I want to make sure I’m there for my own kids as much as possible.”Most of the time, everyone in the interview room is a parent too. They get it. They appreciate that I don’t give them some “I want to inspire the next generation” type of answer. I’m honest with them: I enjoy it, and the schedule is family-friendly.
