Civilian Mechanical Engineer vs Air Force Development Engineer Officer.?

I am currently attending Pennsylvania State University as a Freshman looking to get a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I either want to find a job right out of college that involves making and designing technology for the military (ex. vehicles, weapons, other things) or I want to join ROTC for the Air Force and become a Developmental Engineer as an Officer. Here's a link to the Air Force description if needed -> http://www.airforce.com/careers/detail/developmental-engineer
My mind thought (and I will be asking my Adviser when I see her next) is the Developmental Engineering for Air Force is better as it can create more opportunities after leaving the AF.
If you are or know about what would be the best, please put your input.

How can mechanical engineers get into the Indian Air Force?

AFCAT notification is released twice a year. You can apply for the post of Aeronautical Engineer (M) provided you satisfy the eligibility criteria. If you get above cutoff marks you will be called for interview to AFSB.Interview is of 5 days. Indian Air Force looks for officer like qualities (OLQ's). If the selection panel feels you have them then chances of your recommendation are very high.Remember, SSB doesn't select candidates, it recommends candidates! If you're recommended and clear medicals then you will have privilege to serve our nation.Good luck and keep trying-by a mechanical engineer who was conference out from AFSB.

Joining the Air Force as an Officer - Mechanical Engineering Technology degree, low GPA?

I have recently graduated with my BSMET (Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering Technology) and would like to join the AF as an Officer. However, my overall GPA was a 2.6. My Major GPA was a 2.9 though. This is because my school did not offer grade replacements until I was a senior at which point I had already retaken the classes I did bad in (turning a couple "F"'s into "A"'s) which means my 0's are still getting averaged in and killing my GPA. As I got closer to graduation (junior-senior) MY GPA steadily rose when the classes were getting harder, I even made Dean's List.

My question is what are the odds of me getting accepted as an Officer in the AF? Are there any options out there to help me look better to them even though I have already graduated?

Can a mechanical engineer join the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot?

Yes why not ! . Take my own example iam an aspirant of iaf trying to become a fighter pilot . I had written afcat 1 2017 and have qualified for the same and iam waiting for my afsb at Mysore. Iam currently in final year doing mechanical engineering. Iam competing for Short service commission. If you want to go for permanent commission then write CDS exam conducted by upsc. However one thing I want to focus is that if you are below 24 years then no problem but if not and you want to join as pilot, then you must have a commercial pilot license in your hand. Hope I answered to your point.

I am a 26 year old mechanical engineer. Can I still join the Indian Air Force? If yes, how?

Prasad I am not sure whether you are eligible now or not. Earlier the age limit used to be 27 yrs but now afcat has reduced it. Kindly go through the latest notification. Moreover in case you have surpassed the age don't lose hope, you are still a national asset. You may look out for vacancies in DRDO etc.

Can a mechanical engineer join Indian Airforce in technical branch?

Yes. A big YES. A mechanical engineer can become Ground Duty technical officer. They also have a chance of getting into flying duty. One should appear for AFCAT (Air Force common admission test) and EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) to get into Ground Duty technical branch. Once you are shortlisted through these tests, you will be called for further recruitment processes.

I'm in my third year of B.E., mechanical engineering. What exams should I write to go into Indian army, navy or airforce?

Engineers have few fair chances to get into the defence forces of india and be an officer in the mighty organization. The entries are of two types :Short service commision (SSC)Permanent commission (PC)For you are in the third year of mechanical engineering, this is the perfect time to start preparing physically and mentally for the forces. For army and navy, following are the exams that are held regularly post notifications and you eligible for :UES ( Direct entry PC )CDSE ( SSC/PC )TGC ( Direct entry PC )These exams are elaborated in my previous answers. You have few more options for airforce which are mentioned in the said answer. If you clear the CDSE or UES, you will be recomended for SSB and for TGC being a direct one, you will be called for SSB if your percentage is at par with cutoff. SSB is a 5 day long rigorous process and is the real test of your endurance. If you pass SSB, you will be tested for your fitness (medical test). Most of the candidates are rejected in SSB or MEDICALS.After clearance, you will be sent to respective training academy.Suggestion : Maintain minimum 65% in your graduation. If you haven't, try it henceforth so that the road for your selection becomes smooth.

How can I get a job in the Air Force after completing my B.E. mechanical engineering?

Thanks A2A.I will consider your case.To join Indian Air Force , you get 4 chances in a year.2 through CDSE , 2 through AFCAT.Suppose you clear any of these exams in your very first Attempt.1) CDSE ( Common Defence Services Examination) :- Based on your marks if you clear the cut off marks for IAF you will be called for SSB(service Selection Board). In CDSE there are different cut off marks for army navy and air force as only one exam is conducted to select students all over the country. 2) AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) :- After clearing this exam you don't have choice to opt for army ,navy or air force as it is purely conducted by IAF.This was regarding the exams. After you clear your exams you go through sequence of events one after the another as you go on clearing it.The events are as follows :-1) SSB2) Medicals3) Merit ListYou are eligible to join IAF for flying, technical and Ground duty branches. For technical branch, you will have to clear the EKT(Engineering Knowledge Test) paper which will be taken along with AFCAT exam. For flying branch, you need to clear PABT(Pilot Aptitude and Battery Test) which will be conducted during SSB.Hence , you have many chances to give a try for the exam in one particular year so make most out of it.All the best!
