Its a 3 year post graduate course which makes u a general physician and if you want to become a neurologist you hav to clear DM neurology. DM neuro is again a three year long programm. I want to know more about being a neonatologist!?

1) What should I major in in college
Your college major can be in whatever subject interests you. As long as you take all of the required pre-med courses you are fine.

2) What is a good science class to take in high school to get a head start
You will need college level biology, chemistry and physics so if you can take these courses in high school you may have a head start when you get to college.

3) Can I do and internship while in medical school
Medical school is a full time job. After med school you do a residency, the first year is called internship and is a paid (although not very well) position.

4) What is the average yearly salary
This varies by location, hours, practice setting etc.

5) How often do they work during a week
See previous answer

6) Do you have to specialize in a specific area such as the heart or do you learn about everything
Neonatologists do a pediatric residency where you rotate through general peds and most of the peds specialties. After residency you complete a neonatal fellowship.

7) How do you like the job
I spent some time in the NICU as a student and found it fascinating. It is difficult though to see very sick babies who don't always survive.

Neurologist or Neonatologist?

Both are demanding fields. Since you do not specialize until your residency, do not worry on the type of physician you want to be. Many people change their mind in med school after interning.

For both you need
4 years undergrad
4 years of med school
residency-- neuro surg- do a 5-7 year surgical res plus 2+year fellowship in neurosurg
neonatal is a 4 year res in pediatrics plus a 2+ year fellowship in neonatolgoy

Both are very competitive and demanding.

Do you have to be incredibly smart to become a neurologist?

Though it would help to be intellectually inclined, you don’t necessarily have to be smart to become a neurologist. Not all doctors (or scientists) are geniuses. There are many dull-minded medical practitioners out there. They’ve merely mastered their field of study which required their dedicated effort. So long as you dedicate yourself to your studies, you can master any program.

You will know exactly who the geniuses are and who the average, hardworking students are. Because believe me, instructors nurture the superior-minded students and they typically graduate in the top percent of their class.

What is the best way to become a neurosurgeon?

This answer is valid if you are considering being a neurosurgeon in India.First, you need an MBBS degree, which is essentially the Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery. It takes 4.5 years of study plus one year of internship to complete the MBBS degree.Following MBBS, there are two options. One is doing a postgraduate degree, ie, an MS in General Surgery. An MS takes 3 years to complete. After finishing MS, you will need to do an MCh degree in Neurosurgery. MCh is basically super-speciality. It takes 3 years to finish the MCh. So it takes 5.5 + 3 + 3 years minimum to be qualified to practise neurosurgery. The other option I was talking about may be roughly one year shorter. After MBBS, very few institutes offer an integrated MS-MCh degree in Neurosurgery. The integrated degree takes 5-6 years to finish.Needless to say, becoming a neurosurgeon in India takes a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work. Its not just many years of training, it is also difficult to get into a good college for MBBS, and even more so to secure an MS seat. Hope this helps.

How can I have a promising future, with a 2.5 GPA? I'm in my senior year in high school. I worry almost every day about about my future plans. I desire to become a neurologist or neuroscientist in the future.

I had a GPA of 2.8/4 when I completed by 4 year Engineering program. This is how I dealt with the situation.I never put GPA on my resume. I chose a couple of interesting subjects in my field and mastered it. So when I go for a job interview, I make sure myself to sound technically sound so that the interviewer does not give much importance to my GPA. I easily got a job and worked for 2 years. Then I started planning for higher studies. I scored good marks in GRE and TOEFL and secured admission in a US university for MS in CS. With a strong SOP and average recommendation letters I got admitted. I graduated with a GPA of 3.0/4. But I had good publications and research experience which helped me to gain a PhD admission in CS in a top 25 US university.I never let my low GPA screw my life.

What is the one subject I should focus on if I want to be a doctor?

If you want to be a trusted, effective physician, focus on the humanities.A physician should be a person who can understand and sympathize with the patient’s medical concerns in addition to solving medical problems. A physician who can see their patients as individuals are more likely to be trusted. When a patients trust the doctor, they will be more cooperative but also feel that they are well taken care of (We tend to withhold information from doctors we don’t trust). This can lead to better diagnostics and reduction of the patient’s stress and anxiety, leading to better patient care and recovery.I’m not saying that you should neglect subjects like chemistry and biology. You should absolutely study them well, but at the same time empathy and compassion is very important as a person and especially as a physician. One way to learn about people, cultures, and empathy is to take humanities courses seriously. Addition to this, you can volunteer or gain experience in a clinical setting. Make sure the volunteering provides interaction with people from various backgrounds.
