I Want To Get Off My Antidepressants How Do I Go About This Should I Just Go Alone Without

If antidepressants cause bipolar symptoms, and you stop taking them will the bipolar disorder go away?

Paxil (or any antidepressant) CAN induce (hypo)mania in people without bipolar.

However there is a debate in psychiatry about this topic. Many doctors think that mania can be a side effect, induced by the drug alone. Others think that if a person does become manic on an antidepressant then bipolar is the only option.

It is certain that antidepressants can "bring out" the manic side of a person who truly is bipolar. And it is because of this that doctors just throw the bipolar diagnosis at anyone who becomes manic. A corticosteroid like prednisone can cause depression, (hypo)mania, psychosis, anxiety, agitation, insomnia, and euphoria. But those side effects do not mean anything. A depressed person can become manic on prednisone but it is diagnostically irrelevant.

Paxil is also the strongest antidepressant (not the same as the best) and it has more side effects and a larger risk of discontinuation syndrome (withdrawal) and more more severe discontinuation syndrome than any other SSRI. If that was your first antidepressant (especially if you are under 24) then the doctor was a complete idiot. I don't know of a single doctor who uses Paxil as a first option. So if anything can cause mania it is Paxil.

It is not really possible to tell what happened to to.

And just because the Lamictal and Seroquel did not help does not mean anything. They don't help some people. And Tegretol is more often the best for rapid cycling. Seroquel can make people more depressed or less. Lamictal is actually the best drug for a primarily depressed bipolar.

I think waiting for awhile is certainly the best approach. And there are ways they have reduce the antidepressant withdrawal. It would depend on the symptoms but everything from a small dose of Prozac or a benzodiazepine like Xanax or Ativan or a drug like Abilify at a very small dose.

Only time will tell and in all honestly, you really did not try many options. There are much better antidepressants and many types. And there are other mood stabilizers, some better for controlling mania (Depakote) and other that have shown to reduce depression for some (Tegretol, Trileptal, Lamictal). Even Lithium can help depression (and is great for mania).

A lot of people with bipolar end up on one or more mood stabilizers and an antidepressant (even stimulants).

Can anti-depressants change your feelings for your significant other?

I'm a 20 yr old woman and I've been in a relationship with a great guy for almost 7 months. I take 150mg of bupropion (wellbutrin) daily. I have been on two different antidepressants (effexor and bupropion combined) for almost two year, but about 4 months ago I quit taking the effexor and stuck with the bupropion. Since then I have felt less attached to my boyfriend. My feelings for him change all the time and are as differnt as night and day. Some days I am incredibly in love with him and then other days I wonder if I truly am in love with him or if I just love him. At the same time, I feel constantly guilty for putting him through this.
Has anyone ever heard of anti-depressants, specifically wellbutrin, affecting your romantic feelings?

Since stopping my antidepressant, I have felt off and not like myself. I recently restarted my antidepressant, & it has been a few weeks, but why do I still feel off?

This far from uncommon. Many people have withdrawal symptoms from quitting antidepressants (something rarely mentioned by doctors or pharmacists) that make them believe they’ve gotten worse, so they go back to their medication. In fact, the withdrawal is only made worse by further medication.https://kellybroganmd.com/how-lo...Nor are the medications a universal panacea. When the statistics the drug companies publish are assessed by independent researchers, it turns out the story is quite different: only 30% are helped, with 70% remain unaided or are made worse. As Johnn Harii notes, “between 65 and 80% of people on antidepressants are depressed again within a year”.“Writing in the British Medical Journal’s blog earlier this year, UK psychiatrist Derek Summerfield noted that anti-depressant prescriptions have increased from around 9 million in the 1990s to 64.7 million in 2016—without any convincing improvement in mental well-being.”https://areomagazine.com/2018/07...In its official statement for World Health Day in 2017, the United Nations reviewed the best evidence and concluded that “the dominant biomedical narrative of depression” is based on “biased and selective use of research outcomes” that “must be abandoned”. We need to move from “focusing on ‘chemical imbalances’”, they said, to focusing more on “power imbalances”.https://www.theguardian.com/soci...

Is it possible to get anti-depressants when you're underage?

I am very sorry to hear you are going through this. I know it is hard to believe that people care, but there are those that would care, and undoubtedly do care. My son dropped out of high school his senior year, but I have NEVER thought him a failure. Not everyone is made for school, and particularly the way a lot of schools are ran. If you really are this depressed, there are hotlines, most cities have free counseling available for kids/youth in trouble. If you don't want to tell your parents, I understand, but PLEASE DEAR.. GET HELP. Don't stop eating, don't continue walking down this path of self-hate. You are absolutely NOT ALONE. My email is open. Feel free to email me here on yahoo.
