I Want To Go To College For Theatre But Also Want To Be A Political Journalist

Yale Journalism Initiative?

As noted in the FAQ section of Yale's YJI Web Site, the college does not offer a pre-professional writing major or journalism major — the kind that you seemingly seek. The site goes on to say that journalists can come from any major. One Chicago-based alumnus I can think of who is pursuing a career in journalism is Philip Hersh. Hersh graduated with a degree in French and now does sports reporting, mostly for international sports. No doubt, his linguistic ability is advantageous for interviewing international athletes.

Additionally, I have a friend who is majoring in the honors major Ethics, Politics, and Economics at Yale. The student plans to pursue a career in health reporting and has landed several selective/prestigious internships, including a Kaiser media fellowship.

In essence, Yale seems to encourage students who are looking to pursue careers in journalism to study what they are interested in or what would be beneficial for them in the area on which they would like to report.

Nevertheless, if you have an inclination towards J-school, I’d recommend Northwestern’s Medill, Mizzou, and Syracuse (just off the top of my head).

Double majoring in theatre and political science/history/international affairs(studies)?

Communications would be great, since the fields are more closely related. Check degree requirements for all of the majors you're looking at. At many schools, International Affairs/Studies majors are required to study abroad, learn a foreign language, and have overlap with history and poli sci. Most fields you go into (except for research intensive fields) require you to have good communication skills, and probably make presentations. Being able to speak well in public is a skill theatre gives you, which will serve you well no matter where you go.

Best thing you can do for yourself is to speak with an academic adviser about double majoring. They can really help you line things up to graduate on time, and they'll know all the details about the majors you're looking at. Also, consider minoring in theatre if you're concerned about graduating on time. You'll still get great experience, and you'll have more time to explore other interests. There are a ton of options, so do your research and see what you like. Follow that, and you'll be happy with your studies. Best of luck!

If theatre is my passion, but if I want to do economics/politics in university, what would be the best IB subject combination?

In this case, I’d recommend looking at the specific course you’re interested in at your top choice university.Check their requirements for IB and then tailor your subjects for that course. Before you do anything though, you need to really reflect on what you want to do at university. If you’re dead set on doing Economics/Politics at university then make Theatre a sort of hobby or just a side interest. You can always join a club at university for theatre. If you consider doing theatre however, you’re going to need to look at the university you want for theatre and check their requirements.I’m going to assume you’re set on Economics/Politics so I’ll give you my rundown of subjects you could go for.HL Economics is a no brainer. That should be a pre-requisite to any Economics degree. Generally SL Math(s) should be ok since you’re interested in humanities subjects but like I said, check with your uni to see their requirements. Let’s just say your university needs HL Math(s) to do the course you wantI’d then recommend HL English. I have a friend doing political science at London School of Economics and she does a lot of essay writing and analysis. The critical thinking and English analysis you do at HL English would prove very useful if you went for politics at university. As for SL subjects, these could be subjects of your choice. SL Business is quite easy if you know your stuff. It was one of the easiest subjects I did to be honest. Didn’t really put in too much effort to get a 6 in (one mark off a 7).The other two SL subjects will need to be a second language and a science. You can choose whichever subjects suit your fancy for this one.So to conclude:HL EconomicsHL EnglishHL Math(s) (depends on the course you want to take at university because you could save yourself the stress and just do SL Math(s))SL BusinessTwo other SL subjects of your choice

Do you need to audition to minor in theatre or acting in college?

No. Typically no school's theatre department will waste time on auditioning people who are only minoring. They simply do not have the time, means, or frankly, care. Rowan University is the same as any other.

The reason why most colleges don't audition minors is because it allows them to teach more people about the basics of theatre. Minors are typically only required to do about 5 or so classes, and all of the classes are very basic. This is so someone who's majoring in journalism but would like to be an art critic can learn about theatre without actually having to be talented in it. So no audition.

If you're actually planning on trying out for shows and being activity involved in your school's theatre department but are only going to be a minor- be prepared for disappointment. Many school's theatre departments "protect their own." Meaning when auditions come they will cast people who are majors in the theatre department first. Until you start to take classes and get to know the professor's you will be auditioning for, they really won't pay much attention to you- unless of course you're an absolutely unbelievable actor.

Do not let this discourage you though! Right now I am at college that is known for their amazing theatre department and I'm only a theatre minor there and am doing very well. The first year and a half I was there I did not receive even a call back, mind you. But after a while I started to get cast as supporting parts and then leads. So far I've starred in 5 shows at my school plus was in 2 other shows. It took some time but finally I'm getting cast even though I'm a minor.

Good luck.

I want to be a Model, what should my college major be?

well models dont go to college .. and therefore there isn't a modeling major perse. You could major in fashion or advertising or business. All these majors will help you later on, but not in the modeling aspect of modeling (if you get what I mean). Most of the models you see in magazines and on TV were picked up by agencies at or around 14 years old, so a good number of them never even finished high school. Good luck with your aspirations
