How come Subway will never tell you they have shredded cheddar cheese?

A2A. Shredded cheese seems to be a fairly recent permanent menu addition, likely coinciding with their pizza and flatbread options.I personally have never noticed the shredded cheese in the sandwich bars, but I concede the cheese might be there, and that Subway may have seasonal sandwich offerings which include shredded cheddar. (I imagine that shredded mozzarella is mostly used for the pizzas).Subway sliced cheese, whether it's "pepper jack," "swiss" or whatever, is typically processed, American-style cheese. (NB, the regular American cheese has fewer calories and less fat, leading me to believe that it contains more air or fillers than the fancier-style stuff.)In order for cheese to shred, it needs to be somewhat hard. This might mean they have to start with a more expensive cheese; one that contains more milk solids and less air. I can't imagine the shredding process costing that much more than the forming and slicing, but Casey Allen is probably right in that the shredded cheese is more expensive, and that is factored into the price of their pizzas and special sandwiches, not in their regular menu. (Especially considering the difference between the five dollar footlongs and regular price footlongs, which can go as high as eight bucks.)Also, because the shredded cheese is not incorporated into the regular menu, chances are there is not a spot for it on the sandwich bar. The Subway sandwich artists are probably not trained to offer shredded cheese as part of their ordering protocol. Maybe they are told NOT to offer it (because of the price differential); the likely case is that they are not trained to do so. Most of the time, they will put on as little of an item as possible unless you ask for more. The incremental cost does add up.However, I'm sure anyone can get it if they ask. I'd be tempted to get shredded because it makes it easier to add a very light dusting of cheese (cheese being something I avoid in large quantities due to the calories and fat). If I get Subway to bring home, though, I usually doctor it up a bit as well with my own ingredients. Until Subway offers sugar-free ketchup or Miracle Whip light (an extremely low-calorie mayo alternative that has become one of my staple foods), I'l feel the need to add them on my own.

Is having money in a savings account a bad idea?

First of all, the Central Bank gets blamed for fixing the economy and I don't know why that is. Without printing money the US would have either: defaulted its debts just destroying its credibility; or cut public services/benefits so drastically there would be a riot. Now to answer your question, it's not as simple as good or bad to put money in the bank. You want to put your wealth in investments that return above inflation, but you also need an emergency fund for anything that can't be covered by insurance. Imagine you know your investments will tank for a bit but recover quickly; suddenly an emergency forces you to sell off your investments at the tanking period. So what you need is enough emergency funds in a very liquid place so if an emergency demands you spend some money, you aren't forced to eat into your investments. It's much better to eat the loss on your emergency fund kept in the bank than be forced to liquidate your investments in a crunch. All the best

Was the failure to adequately defend New Orleans during the US Civil War a major strategic error for the Confederacy?

Was the failure to adequately defend New Orleans during the US Civil War a major strategic error for the Confederacy?New Orleans was certainly a very strategic location for the South. You can see from the picture that the Mississippi basically cuts through about a third of the Confederacy. If the Union gained complete control of the river (which it eventually did) it would take Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and a couple of territories out of the war. Vicksburg and New Orleans were both crucial to preventing the Union from gaining that control. Not only that, the South relied on the ability to trade cotton for arms and other goods and New Orleans was a major port. It made sense to devote resources to defending it.But with what? The South did not have a real navy and had only one Ironclad at New Orleans. (its engines weren’t working and it could only act as a floating fort) Its forts were in need of cannon upgrades, but what cannons the South had were mostly stolen from the North. Cannons were in short supply. They were needed for battles taking place elsewhere and couldn’t be spared.New Orleans had 4,000 men to aid in its defense, but they weren’t much good once the harbor was occupied. Having more troops in New Orleans would have meant that they weren’t elsewhere fighting in the war and considering their limited value in New Orleans, it was probably better that way.The main problem with a question like this is that the real problem was that the South was in a war it was all but guaranteed to lose. The inability to properly defend New Orleans was a symptom of that problem. They were being overwhelmed by the superior resources of the North and there wasn’t a lot they could do about it.
