Can ETO became captain in merchant navy?

Yes, even an ETO can become a Captain.First he has to undergo the seatime and also complete the tasks as per cadet record book including the watch keeping. Next he has to pass his exams and start his career from third officer and keep rising. Obviously he will reach the top position later than his peers but he can be a Master if he persists.

How do I become a Merchant Mariner?

I'm interested in making a career in the Merchant Marine as a radio operator, but when you're on the outside looking in, it's hard to see where to begin. What licenses need to be acquired before I can get a job as an O/S? So far I know I need a TWIC, and an MMC, but I don't know HOW to get these docs or if it matters in what order, or if there are any other docs or certifications I need before turning to the union halls or wherever to look for a job.

Also, I'm having a hard time finding information regarding women in the Merchant Marine. I read a book that referred to women as "lawsuits waiting to happen", but I can't find any mention of women actually working in the deck department of any ship (plenty of cooks, though), and I'm pretty sure that to eventually make it to Radio Officer, I have to dig up from the deck department.

I'm not doing any of this through a maritime academy (can't afford it) and I've already begun my FCC licensing. I just want to know what my next steps should be and what I can expect as a 22 year old female in the Merchant Marine.

Is V-Ships a good company to start my career as an engineer in the merchant navy?

Well,  your question has the answer,  you are beginning your career,  which means,  it's the time when your hands get dirty and boiler suits gets oily!  Ships throughout the world have the same blueprint,  atleast more or less the same, valve locations and machinery locations may vary, that's all,, Moreover the market situation is such that rarely people can be picky on companies.  Now your core concentration should be focusssed on learning your job, rather than collecting info bout your Company collect info bout the jobs you will be scheduled to,  that will help you.  Trust me,  once you get thorough of all lines and system on your cadetship, 80 % off your life is made as all Ships have almost similar setup!  Concluding by quoting some famous lines brother,  " Love your job,  not your company, because you never know when your company stops loving you "

What are the salaries in the merchant navy in India?

The salary is very good , Now if i talk about salary in merchant navy firstly it is being divided into two parts 1) deck side 2 ) engine sideDeck side - you starts as deck cadet and if i talk about indian companies they easily gives 400 us dollar while many foriegn companies nowdays are giving 800 us dollar it totally depends upon the company but the range will be 400- 800 us dollar , after getting your coc , u will be promoted to 3rd officer where ur salary will be around 1800 us dollar and after successfully completing as first sail u will get extra increments and ur salary will be around 2400 us dollar ( monthly around 2 lacs ), then when u ll be giving 2nd mate ( coc 2nd ) and then chief mate later master so after getting these coc and experience ur salary will increase and being a captain of ship u can easily get 15000us dollar - 20000 us dollar( monthly around 15 lacs and above ) its a big amount .ADVICE — But being in merchant navy i ll suggest , first see all other option because once u came in merchant navy u wont be getting any other chance to move out on any other field . If money is more important to u and u can leave your family in any condition , then please come to merchant navy . And if there is a bit love between u and ur parents please do not come . World is big of oppurtunity , do not lose ur hope .

Is merchant navy a good field to work or not?

Merchant Navy, even the word is enough to bring goosebumps in the people who aspire/desire or even envy from the very name of it.Joining the Merchant Navy, not only enhances your social status but also helps to monetarily. By the time you are 23–24, you already are earning in lakhs per month, which is relatively a very handsome salary package.Let me make it simple for you by writing down all the advantages and few, I promise few disadvantages associated with this field, since very coin has two sides. Why should you join ?The very obvious reason, Money. Money is plenty in Merchant Navy, but beware the company doesn’t gives it for free, it will make you sweat for every penny that it pays to you.Enhanced social status. Whatever you do on ship, remains on ship. So with the bulk of money earned, you can spend lavishly when you are back. (PS. If you are not married).Exposure to different nationalities in a way enhancing your working experience. Working with people from different countries helps you in a lot of way.The leadership quality which you develop while managing people onboard.Time management skills which you acquire, because the ship is always on the clock.I bet, no other job would present you with everyday challenges and real time problems that you face onboard ship. If you like a physically and mentally challenging job, then Merchant Navy is perfect and advantageous for you.Along with the ship, you too get a chance to visit a number of countries, which for a middle class person is not possible.2. Why shouldn’t you join ?Away from the family for long period of time, if you are able to overcome this problem, then you can be one of the most successful seafarers who has embraced this Earth. Not able to be recognized by your watchman, when you are back from sailing, everytime you enter your complex he’s like “sahab kahan jana hain” ( Sir, where you want to go ).The above disadvantage was just for fun. Coming back to our list of disadvantages, the other one is when you are back from sailing you have to catch up with almost all friends of yours and even with your family about the things that happened when you were gone and by the time you catch up, you have already got your next ship. Now it’s your own life and your are the one making the choice for your career and future. Well according to me, you too should join this field to help you make a better person in life. All the best. See you soon in uniform.

What is the salary of a marine engineer?

Let me simplify this for you.Engine cadet- 400$ to 750$Fresh 4th engineer/5th engineer- 800$ to 1700$4th engineer with experience- 2400$ to 4400$3rd engineer- 3500$ to 4900$2nd engineer- 6000$ to 11000$Chief engineer- 7500$ to 14000$Now, there might be a few questions which might arise in your mind after you finish going through the salary pattern of Marine engineers at various ranks. The salary of a Marine engineer is alloted(in most of the cases) only when he is serving on-board and not when he is on vacations. The wages paid to a Marine engineer on tankers and gas carriers are higher than those serving on dry fleet such as containers and bulk carriers.Pls note that I have mentioned the salary pattern keeping in mind the current market scenario. At times, it varies but yes, it has not changed much in the last 10 years. Again, it totally depends on the demand vs. supply curve.I would like to add one more thing here to the answer though it's not relevant. If you are only willing to be a Marine engineer just because of a handsome salary, try giving it a second thought. It takes a lot from you before you start taking shower in dollars.Wait. Did I tell you that you will be completely exempted from paying taxes? Yes, you will be enjoying the facilities of an NRI when you spend 6 months outside India and you can afford to plan a Euro trip as well at an early age and that too with your hard earned cash.Feel free to ask me if you have some other query regarding this. Thanks for reading. Cheers.
