Questions and thoughts from Pit Bull owners / Against the ban..?
I personally find it interesting that people want to band the breed all together because of a few horribly raised dogs, however, you bring up banning guns because of a few bad gun owners, and people flip out!! I'm not saying that pit bulls are as dangerous as guns, but both in the wrong hands can kill! Also, after a pit bull attack, the usually never say where the pit bull came from. I bet a large majority came from dog fighting rings that were set loose or escaped. It' not fair to judge a breed based on a group of animals breed like this. And I know that dogs, like humans, have completely different personalities, and it is possible to do everything "right" with a pit bull, and still have something bad happen. But you can do everything right with other breeds of dogs, and have something happen. Hello- aren't serial killers people who can from "a good home"? In fact, I have been bitten by three dogs: a golden, a small poodle, and a mutt. My pit is a big baby! He's afraid of our cat with no claws, and has been chased off by our friends cockapoo after approaching him on a "play date". My dog is also a very social dog with other dogs. He loves to play. And, it's usually the other dog who ends up barking and being aggressive and my dog in the submissive position. And even my mom who was afraid of him when she first saw him, has come to realize that he is a sweet and wonderful and well trained dog. In fact we are looking into getting him a AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) certificate to show what a great dog he is! Basically, I will give up my dog who offers me so much more then protection and IS NOT dangerous, when gun owners give up their guns whose only real purpose is to protect and kill and are extremely dangerous!
Is a 1yr old mastiff still trainable?
A friend of a friend is in the military and has to move, forcing them to rehome their 1 yr old male english mastiff that my mom really wants to look into getting. He is coming over for a playdate this weekend, so we can observe him and see how he behaves. My parents had a mastiff before when I was a baby and they really do love the breed. As far as other animals, we have a 6 year old Rottweiler x Golden Retriever mix, and she has a great, loving, protective and playful personality. She loves other dogs. We also have four outside cats that like to wander into the yard and sun on the porch. We also have chickens and horses. The chickens live in a coop about four acres away from the yard. Do you think he'd get along with these animals? Anyway, is a 1 yr old dog still trainable? Any other mastiff tips?

Yes they certainly could but they may become aggressive if you do that, and if they bite someone they could be put to sleep please dont be a bad owner and make them agressive thats how dog breeds are claimed to be "dangerous" when really it is the owners fault

No bite - no needle. The boy assaulted you and attempted to steal your dog. You should file a police report.
Do burglars really avoid houses with dogs?
Our neighborhood is plagued by solicitors going door to door selling everything from meat to magazines, in spite of a township regulation that bans such activity. The township is rural and most people have at least one dog.At the time, I had a Chihuahua (obviously a barker), a pit bull who rarely made any noise other than his tail hitting the wall and a Doberman. A very large Doberman.There was the knock on the door and I waded through dogs, picked up the barking Chihuahua, peered through the side window and saw a man with a clipboard. Sigh. The big dogs just stood there waiting.I opened the door and cracked the glass door, trying to stifle the Chihuahua. The man backed up so fast when he saw the large dogs who were on either side of me that he fell off the porch. His face was a mask of shock and fear. I waved.I made sure every door and window was secured and let the dogs out in the backyard to run. The dobie and Chihuahua barked their fool heads of at a particular corner and I saw a rustle in the shrubs that was definitely not a rabbit. I watched denim and red plaid flannel go over the fence.Fifteen minutes later, there was an announcement on the local police facebook page about robberies and burglaries where a solicitor would distract the homeowner and an accomplice would enter through an unlocked door or window.I am quite confident that my trio kept me and my property safe. No one got bitten for which I am exceedingly grateful. But my dogs did what they are supposed to do: know who is a friend, know who is not. They were brave and loyal.And for the record, the six pound Chihuahua led the charge. The pit bull stayed close to me, watchful. The Doberman was the Chihuahua's wingman.

The SPCA guy nearly garrotted that dog before he would stop biting.Dogs attack for various reasons- because they are insanely aggressive, territorial, food-/resource guarding, or feel their breeding rights/pups are threatened. When they attack, unless they have been trained to attack “properly” like a Police dog, they go for the kill, because they assume you will. Unless you know what to do, they will get you before you get them.Most have a bite force strong enough to break bones and tear flesh. They will fight until subdued but you will stop when you are hurt.
