I Was Considering Rewatching Kung Fu Hustle But I Was Just Curious About One Thing Is The Film

I was considering rewatching Kung Fu Hustle, but I was just curious about one thing: is the film meant to be watched in English?

Kung Fu Hustle is one of my all time favorite movies. Unfortunately I haven't seen it in years so I just don't recall if I saw it in Chinese or English. The only thing about the original language is that if you don't speak Chinese you won't understand they're saying so you're stuck with reading the subtitles which can sometimes be tedious and I don't think will make the jokes funnier.

Kung Fu Hustle has the distinction of the only movie I have ever walked out from. The opening credits are cool, after that it just goes downhill.

Great film! Stephen Chow is an amazing talent. He directed, co-wrote, produced, and starred as Sing in the film. But if memory serves, there is no tragic hero. Sing is the hero of the film, and his is a reluctant hero in a very traditional sense. A flawed person, he is unaware of his true calling as a Kung Fu genius and master of the Buddhists Palm style of Kung Fu.Eventually, he realizes his place in the world and faces the bad guys, beating them handily. The film ends with a happy ending for all.So, in this case, no tragic hero, but a wonderfully, funny, flawed hero.

To add to the other answers here, consider whether you're lumping in movies that are about kung fu (e.g., characters clearly depicted as kung fu masters, explicitly trained in Chinese martial arts) along with movies in which fighting happens to feature kung fu choreography. The former might include films like Master Killer (36th Chamber), Ip Man, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Such films are made because kung fu is a part of Chinese culture and history, and cultural and historical topics are popular themes in cinema. You might just as easily ask why Hollywood makes so many Westerns (cowboy movies) or why the British make so many period dramas like Pride & Prejudice or Downton Abbey. The latter include such films as Police Story,SPL (Kill Zone), and Bodyguard from Beijing. In these movies, the characters played by Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, and Jet Li are not depicted or described as martial arts masters, but simply members of professions in which you might expect good hand-to-hand combat skills. (Respectively, the characters are a police officer, another police officer, and a bodyguard (duh)). In such cases, the action scenes might heavily feature kung fu techniques because to a Chinese audience, those characters aren't "doing kung fu," they are just "fighting." To them, that's how people fight: with kung fu techniques. (It's like asking why so many restaurants in Beijing serve "Chinese food." The locals don't call it "Chinese food." They just call it "food.") (As an addendum, another factor is that fight choreographers in China/Hong Kong/Taiwan are likely to come from a martial arts tradition and that's how they reflexively and instinctively conceive of fights.)
