I Was Wondering What Kind Of Job Can You Get With A Degree In A Foreign Language Besides Being A

For a job where a foreign language is not a requirement, do applicants who speak more than one language have an advantage?

Although it may not be directly related to the job, when you are hiring someone for a long term position besides finding a person who can do the job, you are also looking to add value to the company. In other words, you ultimately want that new hiree to grow in the company and take over different positions over time. Therefore, a strong candidate with other extra skills as a foreign language will for sure get bonus points on his/her application. On the other hand, a candidate who speaks a foreign language can boost diversity by being a member of a minority ethnic group or can also be someone who has lived abroad and can adapt easily to new challenges, etc. From a business perspective, we love to have people with different cultural experiences. It helps to bring innovation to the company, new ways of dealing with challenges and different perspective on the decision-making process.According to a study from Switzerland:“Multilingualism is estimated to contribute 10 percent of Switzerland’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), proving that the language skills of workers open up more markets to Swiss businesses, greatly benefiting the economy as a whole.”As always, the person in front of the application has the last word.

What are the best foreign languages to complement a Library & Information Science career?

It depends on the area of Library Science and location on where you want to work.If you want to work in public libraries in Southern California, it’s a good idea to know Spanish as they deal with many patrons that speak only Spanish. If you are working in a college library in New England, near the Canadian boarder, Canadian French is a good language to learn.I would recommend that if you plan to work in public libraries, you look at the demographics of the area, and see if there is a large population that speak another language and learn that.If you area looking to work in academic libraries and you know that the college has a large international population from one particular area, that would be the language to learn. If you are looking to work with particular special collections, such as at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, they have a huge collection in Asian studies. They have their own floor. If you know that you want to specialize in a subject area, like Asian studies, Mandarin, Japanese, etc. would be languages to consider studying. If I had to pick only one language though, I would pick Spanish. It’s the most common second language you will encounter in many US libraries.

Why do people major in languages? What jobs can they get besides Spanish teachers?

An important thing to remember is that very few bachelors degrees actually translate into a specific job title. Bachelors degrees are important, but more in the way that you learn skills that could be relevant to the field you plan to work in.When you learn another language, you are learning communication skills and how to interact with different cultures. In today’s society, those are incredibly useful skillsets to have.Of course, if you’re going into accounting or economics, a languages degree is probably not the right direction for you. But employers are looking at the totality of your skills and experiences to judge whether you have what it takes to succeed in a given job. If anything on the job touches communication or diversity, a language degree could give you the angle you need.

What kind of jobs can you get with a linguistics major?

I'm just starting college, and I plan on majoring in linguistics, and whenever I tell someone this, they ask me what I want to do with that. The embarrassing thing is that I'm not sure what I CAN do with it.
I live in Northern California, where there are a lot of languages spoken, and I'm learning Spanish, Japanese, German, and Latin. Is any of that going to be useful in the study itself?

What kind of major in magister is possible to be taken by someone who has a Bachelor’s degree of English Education, besides becoming an English teacher?

There are some possible options that you can choose: Linguistics, Literature, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, and also TESOL (if you want to have a deeper understanding about English and how to teach it).It seems that you have already limited yourself to only one aspect and one possible job to yourself. I don’t find that as wise. You see, people from English Education or English literature can do more than being a teacher. You can be a researcher, you can be a reporter, you can be anything. It has a wide opportunity. If you choose to be a linguist, learning linguistics in master degree will be an advantage for you. If you decide to take literature (some universities in Australia also offer M.A. in creative writing), you can be a writer, a publicist, a journalist. If you also love culture or media studies, you can be a consultant, and so on.
