If I Become A Psychologist Will I Be Able To Work In An Asylum

What are the qualifications to work in a mental asylum?

They'd probably need psychiatric nurses, psychologists and more likely psychiatrists.
For psychiatric nurses and psychologists you don't need to go to medical school.

Not sure about psychiatric nurses but psychiatrists usually spend 4 years on a bachelors degree(psychology) 2 years on a masters then off to medical school for 5 -7years where they get medical degree's.

You can't become a psychiatrist if you take the bachalors of art route you need bachelors of science
Alot of people take bachalors of science psychology because it gives them the possibility of becoming a psychiatrist(they earn much more money)and it gives them bettter qualifications

Psychologists usually spend 4 years doing a bachelors(art or science) then 2 years on a masters then 4-6 years for a Ph'D.

To even be an aide/assistant in a mental hospital i'd think you'd need at least a masters

Can psychologists work in mental hospitals?

Yes, and I have!Imagine a treatment team around a table at a psychiatric hospital. The psychiatrist is concerned with the biology of patients’ mental illnesses and how to safely and effectively treat patients with medication. The internal medicine physician is concerned about the physical health of patients, as many psychiatric patients have medical problems such as obesity, hypertension, hepatitis, and just the normal health problems that most people can have. The nurse is concerned with teaching patients to self-manage their disorders using health habits and medication compliance, and with the day to day care of patients including hygiene, medication administration, and collecting health data such as vital signs. The psychologist is concerned about the patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that prevent patients from optimal health. Could psychotherapy teach a patient to regulate his anger, or another patient to cope with parental anger without passively aggressing and refusing to take her medications? The social worker is concerned with how to help patients reintegrate into the community, such as a patient who is married but whose marriage is threatened by her illness, or another patient who keeps getting arrested for bizarre behavior in the supermarket, or a third patient who needs to receive vocational rehabilitation services to return to work. The occupational therapist is concerned about helping patients maintain cognitive functioning such as memory and concentration, complete daily activities of living such as showering, dressing for the weather and managing their money, and a wide range of other functional skills.Everyone is worried about whether the coffee is hot and who brought doughnuts.I hope this clarifies!

How much education do you need to work in a insane asylum?

Let me start by pointing out that while it is a romantic location for a story that the general trend in mental health the last several decades has been for outpatient care. Even for severe disorders so long as they can be adequately managed with medication and therapy. That being said I'm sure most of the people you have asked have told you this so I'll shut up.

Now I'm sure you can hire some of the more functional patients as orderlies but they would still need a few janitors. May not even need high school education to work in an insane asylum as a janitor. They would also need office workers, support staff, and cafeteria workers just like any other institution.

The next rung in the hierarchy would be the intern. Just like anywhere else in the mental health field people fresh out of college need experience while they are getting post graduate education. They do a little bit of everything.

As for the people that get patient interaction, the minimum needed for most types of therapy and counseling is a masters degree.

Some of the counselors as well as anyone qualified to prescribe drugs will have a doctorate.

How to be committed to an asylum?

Hypothetically, say I wanted to committ myself to an asylum.
Since no one else will do it..

Is there any way to do that other than that annoying "cutting yourself" or harming someone?
And staying there is also the plan, not being released.

This is not a yes or no question, details people!

Why a Mental hospitals were called lunatic asylum?

“LUNATIC”

This word comes from the Latin ‘luna’ meaning a moon and can mean someone who goes mad with the changes of the moon.

However, it is usually associated with the old belief that if the moon shone on you while you were alseep, it sent you mad – you became a lunatic. This is one reason why the old thatched roofs came so far down over the windows, they were to prevent the moon shining on someone sleep.

Thus the origin of the word and a bit of history on the thatched roofs.

Photo of a thatched roof is shown here.
