Can a dentist tell if you dip?

Hello,

YEP! We dentists can tell if you dip. Given enough time, you will actually develop a callous on your tissue (inside your lower lip where you hold your chew). The problem is that this callous, also known as hyperkeratinized tissue, can eventually change to precancerous tissue. THE FIVE YEAR SURVIVABILITY RATE FOR ORAL CANCER IS FIFTY PERCENT (50%). Crappy odds if you ask me.

I advise my patients who chew of the risks they are taking and ask them to get a tissue biopsy done on the site where they hold their chew every two years. Placing the tissue under a microscope is the only way to determine if it is becoming precancerous, or not.

I hope this answer helps, and your your sake, please consider the long-term health risks of your decision to dip.

Can a dentist tell if you have been dipping?

Absolutely. Your dentist will be able to see the stain and the damage that dipping is doing to your teeth. So if you are concerned that your parents are about to find out, you should probably brace yourself. I have a dental blog I read often that helps with whitening and coating issues that can prevent your teeth from taking permanent damage from things like dipping, smoking or even coffee drinking. I'll add that site to the sources area so you can check it out. I will also add some 'home remedies' that you can try at your own risk. But I would have to say that if you absolutely do not want to be found out, stop the dipping immediately.

Best of luck!

If you dip tobacco can your dentist tell?

I can't say how many uses it would take, but a dentist is trained to look for the nicotine stains or white lesions that tobacco causes in your mouth. And in case Weeee! didn't know, it's often the dentist that first discovers cancers in the mouth, so don't be flippant.

Will the dentist know I chew tobacco? (specific situation)?

I'm 17 years old, and i've been chewing for about 5 months; for the first 2 months or so, I would only dip about once a week if that. I started doing it more and now its between 2 and 3 times a day. I switch the dips around from top to bottom/left to right, and I dont have them in for more than 20 minutes. I just want to know, will the dentist know if I stop for 3 days prior to the checkup? I'm going to brush my teeth A.LOT leading up to it

Will my dentist know I dip tobacco?

Maybe he will. The most he can do is recommend you stop and tell you all the gruesome things that can go wrong because of it. He is bound by patient doctor confidentiality I believe, so if it is matter of your parents finding out, ask them not to go into the appointment with you. Confirm with your dentist if this is true (I am 95% precent sure it is) then be honest with him. Tell him you used, that you quit and are resolved to staying dip free. It is best if he does know anyway, it might impact treatments.

Can the dentist tell you dip and can he tell your parents?

So here's the situation I live in nj I'm 15 a minor and I dip(if you don't know what dip is don't answer). I started in early October 2010 and I use about a tin every week week an a half. From what ive read he probably can tell but my main concer is if he can tell my parents. I've had receding gums to to poor brushing since my last visit about five months ago but ive actually been brushing better but due to the dip my gums arnt healing. Don't tell me it's bad it is or I should quit because I'm trying I tried in the past and failed but I'm trying again.

Can your dentist tell if you use dip or chewing tobacco?

For God's sake, enough chastisement about using tobacco! That does not help at all with my answer. I TRIED dip about a month ago, and it was gross, I don't recommend it, but I'm just wondering if it leaves a permanent marks in my mouth or if it's just for a while.

If i dip occasionally.. like once or twice a week for a couple months can my dentist find out? ?

It depends on what time frame you have used dip. Also, some dentists don't look that closely, but the hygienist might. The tobacco causes the cheek to pucker and can take a long time to smooth back out. If used over a long period of time, it's exactly the area where cancer occurs
