If People Born And Raised In Texas Are So Proud Then Why Do You Say

To My Fellow New Jersites: Why do so many people fly/display the Confederate Flag here in NJ?

I was born in Camden, raised in Burlington County... but it wasn't until I began residing in Gloucester County that I took notice...

I heard that at one point, immigration between South Jersey and the DELMARVA pennisula was very common. Is that why? Or are we still being flooded by people from the South who have held on to their Dixie pride?

I've also heard that there is a Klansmen HQ or camp not too far from my school... is that it?

All I know is that NJ is the most diverse state in the union... and they never mention NJ being a part of the Confederacy in history class? so WHY? Why is the Confederate flag SO popular in (deep) South Jersey? What do you all think?

Will people in Texas know that I'm from California, because I have a "California accent?"?

My co-workers and I were just discussing this. I'm moving to Texas this summer for law school. I dont really think that Californians have an accent, do they?! They say that people will know that I'm not from Texas and won't be surprised when I say I'm from California.

You think it will be obvious? I guess I dont say "Ya'll". Haha! You think Californians have an accent? If so, how can you tell? Do we say certain thins that others dont? Or is it actually an "accent?"

Why Do People Hate Texas?

Elliot is obviously ill informed. As far as our culture, most Texans are extremely proud of our culture. Most of the "wealthy and powerful" started with an idea and took it from there. We do have a strong oil and gas industry, however it has spread across the states; look at OK, ND, PA, CA for other states that have expanded oil and gas production. Folks don't realize we have tax breaks and encourage green ventures such as solar energy, wind energy and recycling.
We also have the right to work when we want to without joining a union, however there are plenty of union jobs in TX.
Maybe they don't like us because we can boast of multiple sports options and are not limited to one team as most others are. We do tend to boast about our state loud and often. This seems to irritate those from outside of our state no matter if they be from the South or the North. Maybe they're jealous,...we don't have a state income tax. We have access to ocean, forest, mountains, desert. We have hunting, fishing and you can participate in those activities or not without repercussions. Why we are looked down upon is beyond me but as long as they do it from somewhere else, I don't care !!

WHY do people hate Texas??

THis isn't really an answer to your question but I thought of it while reading the respones...Have you heard the new Budweiser "We Salute You" commercial? It is too proud of Texas Guy. It is hilarious! Yankee Wussies! LOL! So there are 49 other states? what do we care? Amen!

Proud to be from Austin!!!!

Oh yeah, and probably one one the reasons they hate us is our portrayal in the media! We always look like stupid cowboys. Heard of Walker Texas Ranger, George Bush, Dixie Chicks, Anna Nicole? See my question on this issue and respond!

What should you never do or say in Texas?

Actually, there are more than just one thing that will get you “unfriended” in Texas. Texans, by and large, are the epitome of southern hospitality. Everyone starts out being a new friend, and then you can go up or down on that scale depending on how you act or the things that you say.First and probably foremost, never say anything negative about the Alamo. This is sacred to us. In school we learned about The Bravery of those Heroes and their Sacrifice before we learned about American history. Inside while visiting, the atmosphere is hushed and reverent. Treat it as if it's the shrine that it is.Don't correct our speech. We like how we talk and a lot of those “bad grammar” moments are one of the things that makes us who we are.Never be rude. To anyone, anywhere, for any reason. If you're rude to a waitress, then real nice to me, well, I saw the true you. I know I can expect it sooner or later. That was taught to me before I was even in school. And whatever you do, never, and I mean never, go on and on about how much better it is somewhere else. If you don't like it here, then don't let the state line hit you in the ass on your way out. We liked it better before half of California moved here anyway.I've only mentioned the few hanging offenses we have here, because all the rest are considered minor offenses that are usually chalked up to you not being here long enough to know better. If you ever see someone here look to a fellow Texan and say, “Bless his heart…”, then you probably just committed a minor offense.A note from Jack:I don't know what has happened lately to cause this answer written last year to gain such popularity now, but I certainly want everyone to know I appreciate your kind words and upvotes. Almost 59 in just the past few days. I'm very flattered, and I truly thank you all.Jack Crowsey

Why Do Texans Have So Much Pride In ....?

I am a native Texan who considers herself a Texan first and a USA citizen second. Texas is the largest state in the continental US and is birthplace of many famous and infamous people. A lot of important historic events took place in Texas. Even as a kid, you know you are special cause you are from Texas. Everyone in the world has heard of Texas. I was once in South Carolina and was wearing a University of Hawaii t-shirt. A stranger asked me if I was from Hawaii and I answered, "No. I'm from Texas." They replied, "Hey, that's even better!" Downside is that non-Texans think everyone here is a cowboy who rides a horse everywhere.

Why do Texans identify so strongly with their state as opposed to their country?

I'm a patriotic American, but I identify first as Texan, then American, and the reason for that is culture.Texas feels like a very unique place in the United States, and it has a very unique culture. It's not quite part of the South, the Midwest, or the Southwest. It has a different history, different food, a different ethnic background. If you grow up in Texas, Texan culture is everywhere. The biggest theme park franchise is called Six Flags, for the six flags that flew over Texas throughout history. As a grade schooler, we rode on a bus 3 hours for a field trip to the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum. We have history courses on Texas in middle and high school. Texas flags are everywhere. Cowboy garb is an acceptable fashion choice. Texas longhorn symbols are common, usually in reference to the University of Texas mascot. There's tex-mex food (Mexican + Ranchero), and kolaches, thanks to our Czech ancestors. You can travel to see beaches, mountains, plains, canyons, and mesas, all without crossing the Texas border. Everyone knows about the Alamo, and many Texans have gone to see it. The Texan revolution is still a great source of pride. The Texas star and state shape is emblazoned on clothes, buildings, highways, etc. Texas has a large GDP and has generally done quite well, even during the Great Recession. Texas also has 3 of the top 10 largest cities in the United States (Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas). When you travel abroad, you can tell people you are from Texas, and people generally know what you are talking about. Despite our shortcomings, Texas is a major destination state for non-Texans, and a comparatively small number of people move out."American" is a very broad term, and although the rest of the world sometimes sees Americans as all the same, we can vary pretty significantly in our backgrounds. If I think about who I am, the descriptor "Texan" nicely sums up quite a bit of my personality. I am friendly to strangers, love hot weather, I'm a huge fan of Texan food (and beer!), and I am neither liberal nor conservative. I'm independent, strong-willed, and Hispanic. As others have mentioned, this Texan pride does not come at the cost of an American identity, being a Texan is merely my particular "flavor" of American.

Why do Texans have so much pride in the state?

They are so "proud" but of what? Texas has nothing and the people there for the most part are annoying.

Also does anyone else agree that their pride is boderline(if not full) fanaticism?
Its like if you insult Texas they take it personal? that is almost like psychosis, but ion a mass scale.

Texans will inevatably respond and attempt to say "where are you from" so they can bash whatever state.
