How can we recover from the dumbing down of American politics to the extent that facts and critical thinking have almost become irrelevant?
Make no mistake, this would be very difficult. As individuals, we can teach our children and families and friends to think critically, and improve education for all. America has been starving its education system for far too long: starving them of funds, of staff, of curriculum.Part of the problem stems from this lack of education. Several things can improve this:Fully fund education: no teacher supplies begged for, no student fund drives, no begging landowners to pay for leaky roofs and asbestos repairs so our children can learn.Free college: with a college education, more students will have the skills necessary to think critically of issues and candidates.Follow-up with at-risk students: make sure everyone graduates from high school, and verify that they actually do get the education they need.A secondary problem that hasn’t been addressed is the vilification of the intellect. People who are intelligent and smart are judged with scorn by a significant number of the populace. This must be addressed, or people will vote against a thing just because some intelligent person spoke in favor. Finally, as an adjunct to the last, another problem is the vilification of the professional politician. People who have been in the system a while learn how it works, and also show their true colors. There’s no doubt how they vote, and they know how to work the system best for their constituents. The populace is best served by people who know what they are doing. While everyone is new at one point, and everyone has to learn as they go - voting against someone merely for the reason that they have been in the political arena for a long time is discriminatory. A vote should be reserved for those candidates that espouse our ideals - not the least prepared.Would you want your heart surgeon to be one who had never performed a heart surgery in his or her life? Would you prefer your fire fighters and police officers to be untrained? Similarly, we should elect people to high political office that are experienced in what they do.When you don’t elect someone who knows what they are doing, you wind up with politicians that can’t identify parts of the Constitution, can’t identify foreign leaders, and don’t know the issues of the day.

Why are Africans so much more friendly than Afro-Americans?
In response to "sunshineview": How can I learn if I don't ask questions? I add these details because I'm trying to get the most accurate answers to my question that I can. If my question is being misunderstood, it needs clarifying. As for your "blatant racist" remark, that doesn't even make any sense. 1. There is only one race, the human one...but let's go with the popular usage of that word "race", 2. I'm comparing the same "race", am I not? AH, but that's why I say I'm not comparing "races". I'm comparing 2 distinct ethnicities. 3. I'm an ignorant white girl from suburbia. HELP ME LEARN IF YOU CAN...but you won't make anything better by throwing remarks like that at me. By calling me a racist, you only make me less likely to correct my thinking, because I will be too afraid to ask the necessary questions for fear of harming my reputation.
