If Something On This Page Offends You

Should I explain that I'm offended?

You've chosen to take offence at something - your defensiveness reveals that whatever statement was made addressed an unresolved sensitivity/issue for you - instead of taking offence at such a statement - refer to it as an unpleasant statement rather than revealing your offence towards it - don't gibe your power away so easily.

Why are so many people so easily offended by everything nowadays?

This may come across as rather snarky but I think it is because our world is becoming more and more tailored to people having their hands held nearly all the time. Everyone gets a trophy, everyone is a perfect little snowflake, and everyone can be offended by the littlest things. Even things that have nothing in the slightest to do with them.College students complaining that they were offended by lessons in class to the point of complaining to the dean. People complaining that Happy Holidays isn't good enough to say any more because if you don't say Merry Christmas you are part of a war on Christianity. People offended by Halloween costumes. People offended by situations in the press that they have literally no information about, they're just having a knee jerk reaction. People offended by being told they need to wait in line for things.

What are you offended about?

Ads such as this.Firstly, let me tell you that I know it is just an ad but it does represent an unspoken ill of our society in a blantant manner.I have no disrespect for the actors but the concept of this ad is very unfortunate to be relevant in our society. This is one of the unskippable ads on YouTube.Scenario:A man goes to meet his girlfriend's father to ask for his permission to marry her. The father asks him about his profession, to which he replies he owns a tailoring shop.(Images source:YouTube)The father’s reaction……This is the reaction he receives. How can a man let his daughter marry a mere talior? And your young hero shows his visiting card and his advertisements on a mug and his shirt. Basically if he can afford to advertise on mugs and shirts, he must run a big business and be rich. This is the reaction of the father. So a man will marry his daughter off as soon as she finds a rich suitor? His reaction changes in seconds from rude to extremely hospitable on realizing that the young man is rich. Now he is desperate to get his daughter married to him.Are daughters just to be traded for rich sons-in-law?These are the women who are responsible for the stereotype that women look for rich husbands to ise as ATMs.I have seen many unhappy marriages owing to the fact that parents get their daughters married off to rich men and later regretting because they turned out to be horrible people once the knot was tied.So I believe despite trying to be funny, the creators have created something that misrepresents women, men with daughters ,marriage and society as a whole. Thanks for reading.Yours truly,NN

Why Are people so offended by The Da Vinci Code?

Many people seem to have a problem remembering that this book is fiction. Some Christians take offence because it is important to them that Jesus was a virgin all his life. I think these people somehow see sex -- even in marriage -- as "dirty" -- otherwise, why would it sully Jesus' purity to have a wife and children? They seem to think the possibility detracts from His perfection.

For me, it makes no difference. Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, whether He was married or not. And the possibility of His bloodline continuing seems to me to be important only to those who think His blood contained some special DNA that would be passed down. Unless that DNA somehow makes people better people, more likely to love others and change the world -- what difference does it make? And from what I see of the world, any DNA that makes people better has been as diluted as the Truth He brought (sorry, Christians). It would be nice if His Teachings existed and were followed in their entirety, but if they were, the world would not be in the state it is in now.

I don't read too much into "The Last Supper" -- it's a painting, not a photograph! It was done centuries after the fact and the people shown *represent* the people who were there but do not look like them -- since no one knows what they looked like. If the figure to Jesus' left looks feminine, it is only because da Vinci painted it that way -- and reflects da Vinci's beliefs and/or skill -- not reality.

I enjoyed the book, but really don't understand the furor. There are so many books that are more interesting and controversial -- but many of them aren't fiction. :-)

Does freedom of speech mean right to offend?

Freedom of speech protects you from persecution by the government. That is ALL freedom of speech does. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with “the right to offend". It's like asking “does traffic law protect my right to smoke?” Completely two different things. So do you have the right to offend? Sure you do. You have as much right to “offend" as you have the right to be bigot and an asshole. But if you take some heat from your speech, unless that “heat" is from the government, your “god given” first amendment right is not being violated. Freedom of speech does not protect you from being fired if you call your co-worker a fag. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to send death threats to a woman whose “femi-nazi bullshit" you don't agree with. So don't throw that phrase around.People think of freedom of speech as if that somehow enable them to say whatever bullshit they want without any repercussions. It's like you get to say hateful things, and others would just take it with a fucking smile and say thank you. And every time some people say something sexist, homophobic or racist… and other people get offended, they get pissed off, saying “you don't get to be offended and ask me to shut up, I'm protected by freedom of speech!” Or when they say something bad on internet, and was removed by admin, they immediately say “I have the right to freedom of speech". Unless the government is bursting into your door for criticizing Obama care, your freedom of speech right is not being violated.I'm from a country where people do get put in jail because they speak against the government, where “妄议中央” (badmouth the central government) is a punishable crime. And you guys are screaming “freedom of speech" when you get some backlash because you talk about how black people are thugs or women shouldn't play video games? Really? No, you're not some martyr of freedom of speech. You're not fighting for the freedom of anything. You're not being honest or telling it for what it is. Don't you dare compare yourself to people who really suffered state persecution because they spoke up! Don't you fucking dare! Here's a piece of advise: learn what freedom of speech means first. Here's a nice little video to get you started.

Why are people so offended when you delete them from Facebook?

Because people today are whiny little babies. Shallow people are so obsessed with FB friends, or Twitter (and Quora) followers. Jesus, get lives already! Someone, unfriends you, or deletes you, or blocks you, oh boo hoo. Grow the fuck up already! Who the hell cares how many imaginary friends you have? Make some real friends, or devote your time to something more constructive, like spending time with your loved ones, or working. Social media should be a hobby, not the basis for your existence. Spend 30 minutes a day on it, then move on. If someone drops you, why the fuck would you care?! You've never even met these people! Silly losers.
