If The Blu-ray Thing Matters To You

Which is better: Blu-ray or DVD? Why?

Which is better: a knife or a sword? …a car or a truck? …a boat or a yatch? The answer for all?Depends on: What you need…If you’re in the kitchen, you’ll need the knife… but, if you’re a musketeer (maybe one of Dumas), probably the sword. If you’re going to the office, you need a car. If you’re moving from one city to another with all your stuff, you´ll need the truck.…and so on.Bluray is a big brother of the dvd. Quality of image is similar, except on the screen’s size (resolution).Dvd top resolution (screen size) is 848x572 in most of dvd players. So, if you have a tv with more than that size, it will need to ‘inflate’ the image to fit.Example: if you have a 704x400 dvd video (very common) and a 1280x720 tv (also very common), the image will need to almost double its size to fit on screen(704 -> 1280 and 400 -> 720). Because of this, the space (distance) between pixels will increase, making the image not as clear as a bluray that matches exactly the 1280x720 without needing to expand. The same goes for a 1920x1080 tv, only greater.DVD and bluray disks are not only to be used as for dvd original codecs (mpeg2), but also can use pc video codecs. For example:DVD players can read videos burnt in dvd disks using Xvid and divx codecs. And because of this, you can store in one disk 2 or maybe 3 movies with the same quality as the original (mpeg2).Bluray can also play dvd disks with xvid and dvix videos (bye bye cinavia). They can also recognize mp4 and mkv. And, it can also read bluray disks with all four video codecs (xvid, divx, mp4, mkv). Some brands can read other codecs (wmv, flv, etc). So… there is little chance for dvds or blurays to die soon. Not while people are massively using them and still buying.NOTE: I almost forgot… latest dvds and blurays, have internet connection and usb input to use usb memory sticks and/or hard disk drive (with videos).

How do I make a blu-ray player region free?

I can play DVDs of any region on it (my player is region free in that respect)I highly doubt that. Blu-ray Disc players are required, as a matter of the licensing process - DVD Forum and DVD-CCA licensing require enforcement of region coding, and as Sony is a member of the DVD Forum - it’s rather improbable that they’d just neglect to enforce region coding restrictions, never mind that the certification process would have just “missed” that.but I cannot play blu-ray discs from other regions on it. How do I solve this problem?Get a player pre-modified for region-free playback, or get a region-free mod for your BDP-S370. A quick search doesn’t find any DIY mods for that model, but you can apparently purchase pre-modified units. Also, you can purchase mods or pre-modified units of newer models, which if you’re gonna be buying something new anyway, might be worth your while. As due to the DMCA, region-free modifications are… legally gray, let’s say, I leave it as an exercise to the reader to find vendors, but Google is your friend.

Why aren't there portable Blu-Ray players?

Blu-Ray movie players have pretty much supplanted Dvd players, much the same way that Dvd players did to video tape players.I have no issue with that;that is just the way progress happens. But one thing that drives me nuts:they don't make PORTABLE Blu-Rays-at least that I can find-the way they do with Dvd players! Why is this so?Surely the technology has been out long enough to make it feasible!

How can I have the Netflix app on my LG Blu-ray player? I tried everything I can like connecting it through wired internet but unfortunately, nothing has happened yet. Is it because my LG TV is from 2013 model?

It depends on your blu ray player and TV.Firstly does your TV or Blu Ray player have “Smart TV” capabilities. If it does then you might be able to get Netflix but this isn't guaranteed.A Smart TV device* is a device that can use the internet to obtain various forms of media but generally it's up to the manufacturer what they give you.(*A smart TV device isn't necessarily a TV a box like say Chrome Cast, Apple TV or even a games console can add smart TV functionality to any TV with a HDMI socket)Some Smart TV products give you more than others, some also need an update to give extra technology as new technology comes about. Now as you're asking about a blu ray player it doesn't matter about the age of the TV as long as the blu ray player can plug into it (all the TV does is just show what the blu ray tells it to show - the main smart TV functionality would be in the Blu-ray player). First thing to check is that does the blu ray player include smart TV as part of its system. Just because it's got a network connection it doesn't mean it's got Smart TV, some blu ray players use the internet connection for things like BD-Live or updating the Blu-ray software. If it does have smart TV in the blu ray player then there should be a button somewhere on the remote that will activate the smart TV screen. On this screen it will show the various apps available (in some basic smart TV devices it might be just a web browser, or maybe YouTube). If it doesn't have Netflix you could try going to the system menu and see if there is an update option somewhere (every device is different so you might need to look in the manual or online for specific guidance as to where the update option might be hidden - generally it's somewhere in the system or setup menus). If after updating (or if it's already updated) you still don't have a Netflix app then chances are your smart TV device doesn't have Netflix available for it. One of the simplest solutions is to go and find a cheap PS3 and use that as a smart TV device instead as that is able to play Blu-ray's and has a lot more smart TV apps than most blu rays - plus as it's quite an old console now it can be picked up for about the same price as a blu ray player now - and you also have the advantage of also having a games console too.

Some DVDs and Blu-rays come with 10 previews and ads you cannot skip. Are some studios or movies notorious in this area?

Different studios approach this differently.  In general you can never skip or fast forward through the FBI and Interpol warning screens.  Trailers can usually be skipped via the next-chapter button, and sometimes you can skip past everything by pressing the "Title Menu" button or the "Pop-up Menu" button.  Unfortunately, trial-and-error is about the only way to know which of these approaches will work. The good news is some studios have begun to take advantage of Blu-ray's ability to make use of local storage to remember whether you've watched a given disc, and won't present the trailers upon repeated viewings (and may remember where you were if you stopped a movie in the middle).  The other good news is that some titles are streaming new trailers if they detect a sufficiently fast broadband connection rather than showing the old trailers authored onto the disc, so if you're someone who enjoys trailers you're likely to find these will remain relevant rather than become stale.Bill
