If The Professor On Gilligan

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

most of the trees on the island were palm trees and palm trees dont float very well -- so there were no materials to fix the boat with.

The real reason is that that would have ruined the premise of the show and would have been cancelled sooner had they not actually been on the island.

If the professor on Gilligan's Island could make a radio out of a coconut, why couldn't he fix the hole in the?

Funny; Marianne and Ginger wanted to know the exact same thing!

Makes you wonder, he'd rather pound his coconut than go fill a hole that NEEDS filling. And they called him the "Professor"? Tain't too bright from where I'm sitting.

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Gilligan always screws every thing up!! I say get rid of him and they would be able to get off the Island.

How come the professor in Gilligan's Island can build a phone out of coconuts but cant fix a hole in a boat

OK, I grew up in the UK, and have lived there all my life. I was, therefore, a Gilligan virgin when my wife, who's American, came over here. She grew up with Gilligan's Island, and would often tell me about it. Then, on a recent trip to the States, she brought back season 1 of Gilligan's Island and Season 1 of Lost at the same time.

It's the same freaking island, I swear it is!!!

The Professor fixed the hole in the boat early on, but he did it with glue that Gilligan made from the essence of a tree on the Island. Once it was completely painted with the glue, it's almost like the glue became EvilIslandJuice, and the poor Minnow fell utterly tp pieces. It died at the hands of the Island! The Island doesn't want them to leave, I tell you! The Professor is the early draft for Lost's Sayid, who can make things and build things but can't triumph over the combination of the Island itself and a madly gesticulating man who feels they're "supposed" to be there - the Skipper is John Locke! Gilligan's an early version of Charlie...and so on, and so on...

They were only supposed to be on a 3-hour tour, and then a freak storm - JUST like the ones on the Lost island, blew them way off course and shipwrecked them.

Checked with my wife on question 3, cos I never saw Gunsmoke either but she says that show had it all - not least Miss Kitty, who apparently set young American lads' hearts racing, if not with the essence of herself, then certainly with the essence of what she could be.

Your childhood can now rest in peace. There were two TV movies of Gilligan's Island in the 1970s - in the first, they had to readjust to being back in civilisation after being rescued, and in the second, they went back and turned the island into a leisure resort. (Or so we're meant to believe - personally I think they were the first of the Others, as seen in Lost!)

And finally, I used to write for a merchant seamen's trade union, the American equivalent of which I'm sure both the Skipper and Gilligan would have belonged to. I can't tell you for certain whether or not any particular spanking went on, but I can certainly confirm that a good deal of homoerotic play and homosexual relationships were prevalent int he UK Merchant Fleet in the 50s and 60s, so....It's entirely possible.

Thank you Gilligan, and goodnight...

Was the Professor's IQ on Gilligan's Island even mentioned?

It's probably a question for the very dedicated fans of GI. Wikipedia lists all the degrees, training and skills he possessed. This isn't what I want to know, though. I was wondering if his IQ was ever mentioned or if he ever said he graduated high school as a child, taught college in his early 20's - something like that.
anybody know?

Why was Gilligan's Island named after Gilligan?

Gilligan’s Island aired from September 1964 thru April 1967. Critics hated the show, but audiences liked it enough to keep it on the air for three seasons. They liked it so much, Gilligan’s Island has rerun in syndication worldwide since its cancellation.Rumor has it that the network’s president and his wife were avid fans of Gunsmoke, which was not on the schedule to return in 1967. In order to keep their favorite show on the air, Gilligan was cancelled.Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of the show, named the show after its main character. However, he was not sure what to name the main character and time was running short as a pilot had to be filmed. Using the technology of the day to find a name fans would remember, Schwartz opened a phone book, flipped the pages, and landed on the name Gilligan. That is how the show got its name, according to Schwartz.Interesting Secrets You Didn’t Know About 'Gilligan’s Island'

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

Because the series would be over. Similarly in crime/suspense/spy narratives, the bad guy is allowed to do anything conceivable to the hero when he captures him except simply blow him away. He can resort to torture, quote Shakespeare, or brandish exotic weaponry, but if he did the sensible thing and popped him, the entertainment would abruptly end and the sponsors would grumble.

Why did the Professor on Gilligan's Island get his own hut?

Definitely too high class for them. Professor Roy Hinkley was the man with all the plans afterall.

What was the secret to the appeal and success to Gilligans Island?

The setting allowed for a lot of inventive ideas (crazy bamboo inventions) that other sitcoms couldn't manage, the stereotyped characters had cartoon appeal and the comedy had a lot of slapstick that harkened back to the classic days of slapstick cinema (The Skipper and Gilligan were often compared to Laurel and Hardy). It also benefited from a relative short run in sitcom terms. While other shows tried to flog their formula long after it was obvious the idea had long died, Gilligan's Island came and went in three years. There was no major "jumping of the shark" moment and no final seasons which continued even though a cast-member had left and been replaced.
