What did you think of President Trump's speech to the nation on 1/8/19 on the government shutdown and the "crisis" at the border?
It was obvious he was reading from a script. It was obvious he wished he could cut loose and rant and rave and be angry. He was like an abusive dad who shouts and curses and gives your mom black eyes all year, and then, on Christmas morning, says, through gritted teeth, "Well...after all...it's Christmas."He said phrases like "this is a crisis of the heart and of the soul." Since he doesn't have a soul and doesn't know what one is, that was laughable. The speech had the usual proportion of misleading statements and outright lies. For instance, he claimed that most heroin comes through the border, when in fact, most heroin enters the US through otherwise-legal entry points. He also claimed that Mexico would "indirectly" pay for the wall through the new trade deal Trump negotiated with Mexico and Canada, though any money saved through that will not go into the US Treasury for discretionary spending.He made a vague reference to "powerful politicians building walls in front of their own houses," though he didn't dare say Obama, since that's been exposed as a lie.Once again, he tried to act as though most immigrants are heinous murderers and that we are simply letting ourselves be sitting ducks for savage assaults, home invasions, and the like, if we don't adopt his plans.One word he almost never said was "wall." He talked about "border security" and claimed the Democrats were indifferent to it, and he mentioned a "barrier" a few times, but he almost never said "wall."As Ana Navarro later said on CNN, Trump was trying to sound like Downey Fabric Softener tonight, but it was a bad, unconvincing performance. Maggie Haberman said his aides pushed him to do this, and he didn't really want to. His aides are desperate, because they know the tide is turning against them on the shutdown.Finally, Rick Santorum gave the response from the world of alternative facts: “Anyone looking at this honestly tonight must admit it was a win for the President.”
