Sharp, sudden heart pain and Metallic taste?

This started about 9 years ago when I was 12 years old. I saw my doctor, and I said, "I have these chest pains..." and before I could finish she said, "It's gas. Anything else?"

They come out of nowhere, whether I'm sleeping, or driving, or at work. It's extremely sharp and stabbing, and I get this chemical or metallic taste in my mouth. It lasts anywhere from 1 second to 10-15 seconds.

When it happens, my heart rate is really irregular, stopping for a 3-5 seconds completely, then beating quickly, seemingly to make up for the lost beats. The irregular heart rate continues for several minutes after the pain dissipates.

Sometimes it is so sudden or sharp that I cry out and instantly burst into tears, which is rather embarrassing since I'm 21 years old, and the pain usually goes away very quickly, leaving me feeling like a fool.

The metallic taste baffles me...

Heart disease does run in my family. My great grandfather died at 35 years of age, and my father and grandfather diagnosed..

I have sudden sharp pains in my chest around my heart?

This could be the pain of 'bones & muscles' of the chest wall. But the description gave makes it more likely to be due to pleural irritation.

Benign chest wall pain is most likely a transient and fleeting irritation of the pleura, the slippery membrane that lines and protects the lungs. The pleura are very sensitive to pain, and for reasons that are usually not clear, some momentary irritation causes a painful sensation that can be quite severe, but that quickly subsides. This condition has no medical significance whatsoever. It is very common. Most people will experience these symptoms at some point in their lives.

The pain is usually a sharp "catch" that interrupts a breath, and that returns with each breath for a few moments - then it subsides. It is not related to exercise, and generally can be localized to a specific small area (smaller than the palm of the hand) on the chest wall. It usually lasts for less than a minute, but can come back on and off for an hour or so.

This condition can be evaluated by taking a careful history. The condition is very common, and very easy to diagnose by history - as long as the doctor is aware of it and understands it. The important thing to keep in mind is that this condition is completely benign, and is not related to any medical problem or any abnormality.

I do not think you have much to worry, Yet, a check up by doctor will clear any doubts. Good luck.

Why do I get sudden strong sharp pain in the heart?

Every now and then I get really bad, sharp, strong, excruciating pain in my heart. I can't breathe when it does. I feel something moving physically in the rib cage. When I get the pain, I find it hard to move as I fear that if I move too suddenly the pain might get stronger. It happens any time during the day or night and not related to eating food. I feel like I am going to have a sudden heart attack. It's been happening for a year now I think. What can be the reason for this and what do you call this? It doesn't feel like a heart burn. I feel like sometimes I will die of a sudden cardiac arrest. Please help me.

What causes pain in your heart?

Pain in the heart should always be considered an indication to consult your physician.Heart pain or Angina is usually felt as a constricting or stabbing pain in the chest area and may radiate to the shoulder and left arm and even the jaw.The main cause of pain is decreased blood supply to the muscles of the heart. Even though the heart handles all of the blood that is present in the body, the muscle of the heart which perform the vital pumping action cannot utilise blood from within the heart directly. They are supplied by the coronary arteries which branch out from the aorta (the outlet of the heart for oxygenated blood). If for some reason the blood flow in these arteries is disrupted or reduced, the oxygen supply to the cardiac muscles is reduced and inadequate as per the demands. This is what causes pain. The blood supply can be decreased due to a number of reasons, but the most common one is due to fat deposition in the walls of these arteries which causes them to narrow, hence leading to a decreased blood supply (atherosclerosis). This is a symptom of concern as if it goes uncontrolled, it may ultimately lead to complete disruption of blood supply to a part of the muscle which will cause a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a Heart Attack. To prevent this, the underlying disease needs to be indentified and treated before reaching a critical stage. Hence, consult your physician immediately if you experience chest pain as described above, especially after exertion or exercise.

What is this sharp, sudden, and quick pain near my heart?

It happens totally at random, I could be waking up, walking, driving, or sitting at work...but sometimes I feel a sharp, almost pinching kind of pain in my heart or heart area. What is this? I was diagnosed with heart palpitations and an irregular heartbeat, but is this anything to worry about? The pain lasts maybe one second and then is gone for days, maybe weeks, but I still wonder and worry a little bit. I'm a very healthy and athletic 22 year old male, I tend to get stressed and worry about things, but I'm an otherwise very healthy person. Any input is appreciated.

Sudden Sharp Chest Pain In Center of Chest?

Out of the blue, I get these REALLY strong, sharp pains in the center of my chest like something's squeezing my heart. Taking a few deep, slow breaths normally calms them. Any ideas what could be causing them? I get them when I lay down at night, sitting and watching TV with my kids, and during any other normal activity. I don't even have to be active and they hit me suddenly with no warning. I'm on Blood Pressure Medicine w/Dieuretic due to my hormones raising my levels (I'm Polycystic and on BC pills for the hormones and they caused alot of fluid retention and swelling...which caused my blood pressure to elevate slightly...funfunfun) and went through 4 EKG's and that horrid EchoCardiogram where they tried to kill me on the treadmill and gave me medication to make my heart race. The result were all fine and the cadiologist tried to tell me it was all in my head. I'm an at-home-Mom of 3 kids and our home is rather stressful right now, but this has been going on for over a year now. Any ideas folks?

What causes a sharp pain in your chest?

Chest pain can be due to various reasons . KIndly dont jump to heart attacks but definitely rule it out. so basically chest contains many different structures from where the pathology must be ruled out.Starting from outermost structures going inwards;skin and subcutaneous tissues : check for any skin rash ,abscess, or neuralgia.muscular pain due to undue stretchingbony pain due to inflammation in attachments of ribs to the sternum known as costochondritisesophageal due to gastroesophageal reflux disease which is common after having meals.heart causes as in MI where pain is continuous in character ,lasting longer than 20 minutes, or in pericarditis characterized by chest pain, fever, pericardial rub.lung causes as in pleuritic pain in pleural effusion.another important cause is pulmonary embolism in which case there will be history of prolonged immobilization of the patient.vascular causes as in aortic dissection which is a medical emergency occuring due to very high blood pressure.P.S-there are other many causes for chest pain, above being more commonly seen.

I have a sharp pain in my heart for a second or two. It increases when I breathe hard. Is anything wrong?

Kartik and Liang-hai are correct: you should not have anything to worry about (I’m not a doctor, but had many years of experiences similar to yours!)You can get pains like that from little things going on in the cartilage of your ribs, and I think it’s actually pretty common. Brief twinges of pain like that, even if fairly “sharp,” are far more likely to be in your “chest wall” than in your heart (“far more likely” = probably something like 99% more likely if you’re young… i.e. under 30 or 40.) and not an indication of anything serious unless they go on for significant periods of time and/or are recurring and/or are intensifying.Ask your doctor about them and tell him/her that it’s worrying you and you’d like some real explanations about what it could be.Meanwhile… put a couple of variations of “What is this chest pain” or “Why does my chest heart” etc into the search box on Google or right here on Quora. (Go to “Ask A Question” type those in, and you should see some “suggestions” and “Search More Suggestions” appear underneath. Click those and you’ll probably find lots of similar questions with answers out there by medical folks who know what they’re talking about and who can reassure you.MJM, not a doctor… but sometimes, particularly when younger, a hypochondriac…
