If You Live In Or Have Lived In Denton Texas-this Question Is For You.

Why have you chosen to live in Arlington, Texas?

I’ll make this short and sweet. Arlington has limitless resources of great life and education. The amenities of good government doing what’s good for its citizens including quick response to repairing roads, listening to Arlingtonians voices of parks for dogs and etc, no smoking policies, great libraries, amusement parks, ball games stadiums (also used for concerts and big conventions), friendly and helpful Arlungtonians, UTA, great hospitals, and close to DFW airport since it’s between Dallas and Fort Worth. There’s hustle and bustle just like any ‘big’ cities but it’s generally ‘quiet’. Love it here and been here almost 40 years. So come on down or up and check it out for yourself.

What is it like to live in Denton, TX?

Simple answer: it sucks. Too many people crammed into an infrastructure that was designed in the 1960s, and even though there have been a few road widenings, the city has failed miserably in in improving the residencial areas. There are too many cars on an antiquated street system. The interior of the city is basically the same as in the 1960s and 70s when the population was half of what it is now.Because of the educational atmosphere, what with 2 universities, there are a lot of play-acting pseudo-intelectuals, a bunch of wanna-be’s. As a Christian, this is one of the most un-churched counties in the nation. Too many non-conforming independent thinkers who are quick to criticize if you do not think their way.I guess in a way I have lost the friendly, laid-back city I once enjoyed. I have run up against many people with the attitude of (pardon the word),” Scew you and what effects my actions may have on others. I’ll do whatever I damn well want because I can think for myself and YOU are WRONG.” Am I cynical? Probably so in regard to the degradation of what was once a good place to live. “All for one, and one for all” is dead in this county, and it seems to be a general societal death as well.

Where would I want to live in Texas?

I guess, given the variety of space in this great state, there would be a great variety of answers to this question. As I did my herpetological work in the Delaware basin, my first thought is somewhere near Lubbock. With Texas Tech, the west Texas view, the largest oak forest in the world* and other extremely interesting places nearby, I can't think of a better place. A short drive to El Capitan, a wonderous assortment of herptiles, not an unfriendly human in sight and wide open spaces, it is an easy to do something new every day. Furthermore, the geology ain't bad either. Guadalupe mountains, the Glass mountains, Carlsbad, the lava flats, White sands, ….Once over the line into NM, you can study the single species of lizard that inhabits three distinct environments and none of the three is hospitable to the residents of either of the remaining two.The single drawback in regards to your question I'd there are no ‘large’ herptiles in a real comparative sense. About the largest would be a Diamondback Rattler. But there are plenty of those. Now if you want to get further out, try Alpine and the big bend country. Sul Ross State UniversityTexas Tech UniversityAccording to TAMU -Texas Ecoregions“Today, the Big Bend region is benefiting from eco-tourism. Two national parks, Guadalupe and Big Bend, are major attractions for nature lovers. McDonald Observatory is a great destination for star gazers. Marfa is becoming known for its art community. Fort Davis is rich in history following the restoration of the Fort. Presidio and El Paso are gateways into Mexico.”*and about that forestLargest Oak Forest in the World?

Denton, Texas or San Marcos, Texas?

I don't know much about the north Texas region (Denton) but do know it is a very conservative area of the state. If you are very conservative and want a good education, University of North Texas can offer you that.

I actually did undergraduate and graduate work at Southwest Texas State University (SWTSU) now known as Texas State University.

Depending on what you wish to pursue as a major, UNT has some better programs, but TSU has a very good faculty (my opinion) and can provide some extremely good programs. They have one of the top ichtheology programs in the nation. The Chemistry department has major grants for the space shuttle program. Dr. Bing (a world renowned mathematician/topologist) is one of the math departments products. San Marcos is also in a region that is a lot more liberal/non-conservative than north Texas. It is only 30 minutes from the state capitol and UT Austin (a top notch world renowned university). Austin also provides a lot of educational and social hot spots. Austin is probably the state's hottest spot for social activity.

San Antonio is also only an hour drive south and has a huge tourist base for fun and entertainment.

So even though I am biased (and quite liberal), I would say go to Denton.

Unless you can focus on your education. San Marcos is really fantastic, but unless you can focus, you'll be too easily distracted by having fun. there is just too much for most people in the Austin area to deal with.

good luck!!!

Where and when in Texas can one find fireflies?

I really like this question and you will soon see why. I have lived in Texas since 1981. In reference to the other answers I live in the Gulf Coast area, which is obviously very wet and also swampy/ marshy in many areas. We do have droughts from time to time, though not as severe as some of the other parts of Texas have had recently. In the almost 35 years I have lived hear I have never seen a firefly, (or, as we called them-lightning bugs). I really missed them (along with waterfalls). Last week I came back from vacation in the Northeast; the Boston and Albany NY areas. My son has a home in the country with a screened-in porch. We had dinner on the porch and as it started to turn dark the lightning bugs started to come out. We turned off the light so as to see them better. There are woods on the edge of his property. It wasn’t long before there were hundreds of “fireflies in bloom”. From the tops of the trees to the ground. Never in my life have I seen so many and I never sawone dart quickly before. The twinkling lights seemed like a Christmas tree lit up in the dark, decorated with nothing but tiny white lights. We sat up until 11:30 just watching them and then we had to go in. It was magnificent and possibly the highlight of my trip. Which was altogether wonderful.
