Is using my laptop at public WIFI spots risky?
Here's my procedures when I'm at a public wifi hotspot, i.e. Starbucks. 1. Protect your privacy Use antivirus, antispyware, firewall, intrusion detection software. I use Norton AntiVirus 11 on my Mac. 2. Don't leave things laying around If you go to the bathroom, don't leave external hard drives, thumb drives, or your computer laying around. People will steal it. Just using an administrative password isn't enough to keep them out of your personal data. That can be cracked as easy as inserting a CD into your disc drive with Ophcrack. Gather up your belongings, put them in your bag/laptop case, and take it with you. 3. Encrypt your data Encrypt your internal, external, thumb drives. People out there want to steal your financial information. You can use a free application that does it for you called TrueCrypt. 4. Backup your data Everything on my computer is saved on my external hard drive, everything on my external hard drive is on my computer. If my computer crashes, I still have everything on my external hard drive. If my hard drive gets chewed up by my dog, I still have it on my computer. Personal experience: There are people out there who sit in wifi hotspots to hack other peoples' computers. I was sitting at a Starbucks one time and Norton's intrusion detection alerted me that it blocked an attempt to remotely access my computer.
Are HTTPS websites safe when accessed through open WIFI networks?
Short answer:Yes.Longer answer:Yes, it's pretty safe, as long as you're aware that the security between you and the server you're trying to reach has not been compromised.I imagine it could be possible to do a man-in-the-middle attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man...) with a purchased certificate for a domain that looks similar to the domain you're actually trying to reach and make sure the user gets redirected there if they make a request for www.americanexpress.com. (eg, www.americanexpres.com for www.americanexpress.com)Or, if they're targeting less savvy users, they could use a self-generated certificate and hope the user will just click the correct buttons to accept the certificate and move on.
Can I see what someone connected to my mobile hotspot is browsing?
Kind of. You can capture packets and look at those, but if they're using encryption, such as HTTPS, all you'll see is the server they connected to. The rest will be gibberish.So, you'll know that somebody connected to Quora, but you wouldn't be able to see their login info or anything they posted. If it's a public access point, this isn't very useful.However, if you're having your friend connect, you'll know that Joe connected to PornHub, but that's all. You wouldn't know if he was watching traditional porn or clowns popping balloons while wearing latex in a pool filled with Jello.On the other hand, if they use unencrypted HTTP, POP3, FTP, etc., then you'll be able to see everything.As for the legality, it's a grey area. You'll want to consult a lawyer, and you'll probably want a set of terms that the user has to agree to in order to access your hot spot.There is a way to decrypt the secure traffic using a man in the middle attack, but to get it to work with no warnings on their device, you'll need to social engineer them into installing a certificate on their device. That would likely be illegal unless they're your employee connecting on company time with company computers and phones and you've had them sign a usage agreement that tells them what you're doing.

If someone on the local network is sniffing packets, they will be able to see that the mobile hotspot is connecting to a Tor router, and that you are connecting to the hotspot using Tor, if that’s what you are asking. It’s all packets in the air, and you can sniff the metadata pretty trivially using a Raspberry Pi device the size of a matchbook, a laptop, whatever. Even on an encrypted WiFi, but many coffee shops’ and such aren’t.They will not be able to tell if you are using Tor to evade them sniffing your bank password, or if you are trying to connect to illicit material on the dark web.Shoulder surfing would probably make the latter sort of activity dicey in public, if you didn’t think it were dicey enough already.
If I use someone's wifi, can they see what I'm searching?
It really depends... If you access someone's WIFI which is unsecured or unencrypted then yes, they will be able to see every single thing you do, including passwords sent!!!! If you are accessing someone's WIFI which is secure or encrypted by means of WPA, WPA2 and to a lesser extend WEP, then your traffic will be essentially random digits and numbers and completely unintelligible. However, if you are just connecting into someone's WIFI it would most likely not be a secure or encrypted access point - as these would require a password or credential to log in and access the WIFI. If you are going to continue using an unsecured WIFI I suggest you find a VPN to use or software such as "Hotspot Shield" which is DESIGED to be used in cases such as yours. Where you are using an unsecured wireless acess point and need some form of security. Search www.download.com for "Hotspot Shield" and use it when you connect to these WIFI networks.. It depends on her service plan and how it's billed. If anything you are slowing down her connection and impacting overall performance on her end. You may want to stay away from questionable sites or downloads because she will be held accountable for it. They cant do anything to you legally for using the Wi-fi that is publicly available. You can easily say you thought it was an open hotspot for free use.They have to prove otherwise. It's the responsibility of the person paying the ISP to secure their own network. That is the point of Wi-fi encryption and MAC filters. If you are hacking their encryption and eavesdropping that is illegal. If you are using the access to engage in online piracy or any criminal activities that is illegal.

What everyone said above is correct. The WiFi owner knows everything you are doing if they want to log it, the ISP the WiFi is using is logging stuff all the time to cover themselves. If you are on Wifi at some hotspot then anyone who wants to can see where you are going and what you are doing since you are on a big shared connection. I suggest you invest in a personal vpn like Surfbouncer. They will encrypt everything between your laptop and their servers so none of the above can see what you are doing. When you come out on their servers your traffic is mixed in with all of their other users making it very difficult for someone to figure out what is yours and what is from what could be thousands of other users. This is pretty good privacy. However, you should know that there is no such thing as total anonymity on the internet and law enforcement and such can always figure out what you are doing if they are determined to spend the time and effort. However, this solution protects you from local hackers, ISP's doing data mining so they can sell your info to advertisers and such.
