If Your Landlord Makes A Mistake In A Bill You

Can my landlord bill me for damages after returning my security deposit?

My boyfriend, daughter, and I just moved out of a house after living there for roughly six months. After moving in we realized how poorly taken care of the house has been. It was very old and nothing had been updated in a very long time.

Looking back, we made a huge mistake moving into the house.

My boyfriend completely re-did the entire yard- front and back. This took him a very long time as it took tearing up the entire yard, picking out all rocks and other debris, then planting grass seed. He pressure washed the entire house and deck. We also repainted the inside of the house because the white had began to turn yellow with age. We made MANY improvements. I kept a very clean house. I have one small dog who was NEVER alone and not once had an accident in the house.

In our lease it said we needed to give a 60 day notice before moving out. I took it upon myself to send our landlord an email asking if we could get out of the lease early and still receive our deposit back because of the improvements we had done to the landscaping of the house. She agreed.

We moved out and one month later we received our security deposit. She held $200 for carpet cleaning. Which was ridiculous but I wasn't going to argue about $200. (The house contained very old, cheap, office like carpeting that stained and ripped easily. It needed to be replaced years ago.)

Then a few days ago I get a letter from our landlord's attorney husband. It was basically a page of him being a bully. Saying he wouldn't of returned our deposit if it was up to him and the carpet cleaning would cost more than $200 and he would be billing us for that. Can he do that since he already returned our deposit? Are we liable to pay?

My Landlord put a lock on the thermostat?

When you're not home, open a window to let the cold air in. The furnace will run overtime. They will wonder why the heating bill has gone up. Lie to them and tell them you used to turn down the heat when you were out and at night, but you can't do that anymore, and that's why the bill is higher.

Landlord breaking the lease for parking spot?

I rented a studio apartment in Los Angeles. In my lease, it is stated that I am to have a parking spot. The day after I move in the building manager tells me there are no parking spaces left. I have called the management company several times asking that this be resolved. After many attempts, everyone now is passing me off to someone else. Obviously, the landlord had broken the lease. At this point I just want out because of the hassle. What are my options? And how do I go about getting out of this?

Do I have to pay for the installation of a new mailbox lock and key if I lost my keys?

Recently lost my apartment keys, and was given a bill to pay for the installation of a new mailbox lock because they lost their spare mailbox key for my unit. Should I have to pay because they lost their spare key?
I didnt have to pay (besides getting them cut, as it was their master copy and I had to return it) for a new apartment key, because they had their spare set for that. So I cant' tell if it's fair for them to charge me for the mailbox when they are the ones who lost the spare key for it?

How Can I Get My Landlord To Remove Mold?

It is very expense to remove mold because it must be done by a specialist. If you want to kill your relationship with your landlord, go to you city health department and explain your problem. They may send an inspector and then require the landlord to have the mold removed... at great expense.

On the other hand, you could just wash the wall with laundry bleach and kill most of the problem.
