Let’s put this social media thing to the side, for now. We’re talking about “entrepreneurs,” which has nothing special to do with social media. Starting the kidees on s/m is like starting them with calculators before they learn to do arithmetic. These things were indestructible and didn’t go flying and twanging around like the ones from the dry cleaners. “Where’d these come from?” I asked. And that’s when the office manager told me they bought them from Junior Achievement. In partnership with a designer and machine shop owner, the local chapter made, marketed and sold these things. And they were a hit!Under supervision of business people, here’s what happened:The kids identified a need - for a sturdy, attractive hangerThey studied sourcing to locate a supply sourceThey developed a jig to make the hangersThey approached local businesses with their samplesThey learned sales. For example, you don’t say, “Do you wanna buy my hangers?” No, instead you say, “How many of each color would you like?”They learned database management (paper spreadsheets and card files, in that day) and financial record keepingThis was beyond HUGE!I have been a believer, ever since.Mark me well >>> this will not make any kid into an entrepreneur. Your job is at risk.It's awful being bored in a job, and I didn't like it a bit.See the situation from your employer's point of view: Your employer's problem is that they don't have enough customers to keep both of you busy. What can you do to fix this?If you are paid for your time, the best, safest option is for you to ask the person who pays you what they would like you to do. But much better still, suggest some things that would be beneficial to the optician's business. Make a sample flyer first, show the boss, ask what changes your employer would like made to the flyer, offer to distribute them. DO NOT suggest you are improving on your boss, or that they are somehow at fault for the situation.I'm guessing you are not in the US. Are the store's windows clean? (The windows are a critical part of a business, especially an opticians.) Are there good, interesting and eye-catching displays in the windows and inside the shop? Are the floors clean and uncluttered? Is the optician's chair shiny? Are all the mirrors absolutely spotless? You probably don't even need to ask before you do these things -- except perhaps for a proper glass cleaning liquid. You can use newspaper if you can't find clean cotton rags.Which parts of the business are most profitable? Examinations or frame sales? Contact lenses? Replacement lenses? How could you make these more prominent? Are there things that you are often asked to do that could be prepared in advance?Are all the sample alternative lenses clearly displayed, showing their effects? Non-reflective coatings? High Index lenses? Anti-scratch? Your employer wants to sell these extras, I bet. Ask. No samples? Ask if you can call the companies and get free samples for display.Become a useful member of staff. Right now, you are an expense. And doing non-work things will not make you more valuable. Use your 'spare' time to the benefit of the person who is paying for it. It's not 'free time', it's wasted time.
