How can a teen start a lawn care business?

This is fantastic! A lawn/landscaping business when I was 12. There are several factors to take into consideration before you start:Lawn Mower fuel and costs of operationSize of lawnsYour availabilityYour dedicationNeighborhood size or willingness to travel.Having a lawn care business is rough work. I still run mine several years later, and I wake up every morning going “ugh, I don't know why I do this anymore.” I am a highschooler, and until I get out of school I only mow lawns on the weekends. This really pushes all of my schedual pretty close together. I TRY and limit my mowings to two lawns a day and that gets exhausting quick.NOTE: It is only me, and I have a tiny push mower. Not a ride-on mower or anything. Not only is it great excercise, but it is a great way to make some cash! I would suggest charging $15-$20 per mowing. Be sure to NOT have a contract company. Nobody likes those. Do it where you have several options:Every weekend (or a schedual kind of thing)While they are on vacation or away.A one time thingDO NOT hire anybody. It's a waste of money, and you cannot ensure quality like you can yourself. Before I go I have a few tipsThis may sound ridiculous, but ask the customer if they want horizontal or vertical stripes.Don't forget to bag, weed whack, blow away the clippings.DO NOT charge extra for any of these.Make some posters, or if you have a neighborhood Facebook page post on there. Tell your neighbors you are doing it. Without advertising they won't know who to look for!Save the money. Put 50% into a savings account. And never give up!Cheers,Thomas Galvin, Founder of Tom’s Lawns16 year old entrepreneur

Why don't places that tow your car accept credit cards for payment?

Most tow companies will accept credit card payments for customer requested towing, but will not for impounds or other non voluntary tows.

When someone calls to have their own car towed, they agree to the price before the service is rendered. If they pay with a credit card, they are not likely to dispute the charges later. If someone is trying to reclaim their impounded car, they did not agree to have it towed, and they are more likely to dispute a credit card charge (or stop payment on a check).

The tow company would have to file suit against them if they do dispute the charges, and the cost of collections is sometimes higher than the tow bill Rather than deal with the potential problems, they require cash or certified funds on impounds.

How to start mowing lawns for money?

Let's just say for example that I am an older potential client. ( with landscaping experience ) you knock on my door and I start asking you questions.
1. I have a kentucky bluegrass. do you know how high to cut it?
2. How often are you going to be fertilizing?
3. how much experience do you have?
4. I was wondering? how often should I be watering my lawn?
5. When should I dethatch?
6. how often should I be power raking?
7. how frequently will you be mowing?
8. are you going to make sure your mower blades are always sharp?
9. how often should clippings be left to break down in the grass or picked up?

There are other questions as well. these are just a few that may come up. I am not trying to discourage you but you need to do some more research on, soil, grass types, watering, fertilizing, care and maintenance, and how to run a business before you venture into something like this. Could you please spend at least a little bit of time educating yourself first?
here is a link for you to do some reading on. Colleges and Universities are a great place for info. good luck to you. and anyone else reading this..it's a good site to bookmark.

How do I find customers for my landscaping business?

The best way to find new customers is by word of mouth. That requires that you always do the best job possible and are always going above and beyond the customers expectations. The first few customers you get when starting any business are the most important customers you'll ever have because everything rests on their satisfaction and willingness to refer your business to a friend, family member or colleague.Of course there is always advertising. Getting your company name on diner placemats, putting your business cards up in gas stations and on community boards in town hall, the local sports arena, craigslist, the newspaper and much more. But to really drum up business on demand there is only one way and that is soliciting. Going door to door, making sure your making yourself available for people to approach you while you are working in a neighborhood. (Side note to that; make sure you are always well dressed and clean cut. Don't wear heavily stained clothes and have a gross beard or stubble. Always look clean. Everyday. Go to thrift stores and such for cheap pants if you are constantly getting stains and rips. Don't wear white shirts. Dark blue, black, grey)When soliciting, don't be pushy and always recognize someone who is not accepting of your presence at their door or yard. Say something like "I'm doing some work in the neighborhood and just wanted to see if anyone else in the area was in need of a lawn mower etc." It takes practice and it requires confidence. Don't be let down by rejection because more people will reject you or lead you on then pay for your service. You just need to always be on the hunt so your numbers will start going up.But while doing all this, make sure you are maintaining the upmost integrity and quality in the work you are doing and services provided. Because the word of mouth is always there but it could be to your detriment. You and your employees decide how people talk about you.
