Importing Cars From Japan

Importing cars from Japan to the USA?

No matter the origin of the car into the USA, the car must be 25 years old, or older.

Importing a car less than 25 years old will involve a lot of red tape. It includes posting bonds, quite often 10 times the value of the car, converting the car to have it brought up to USA National Highways Transportation Safety Administration standards, paying US Customs fees, and much more.

The purchase of a $5K car in Japan could cost you approaching $60k-$70k.

How Do You Import A Car From Japan To USA?

The Japanese were (and are) technical innovators of the automotive world, so importing a used Japanese car just carries the passion forward to get something that's looks good and drives well.

As far as importing is concerned, I've found these sites more useful and direct for buying/selling specifics and importing authentic car parts at the right price:

It might seem tough at first, but if you focus on the specifics - used car import procedures, import regulations (age of the vehicle / emission norms) and money transfer methods (usually wire transfer) - you should do fine.

How much does it cost to import a car from Japan?

As a dealer it is against the law for me to sell a car that does not meet USA safety standards. If they gave you the car, the shipping cost is still more than what the car is worth.

Are import cars cheaper in japan or the usa?

If you care about the money why doesn't the shipping price matter if that could possibly cost you more than the car? You should buy the car where you are stationed because you are going to be moving again in 2-3 years anyway. My husband & I are stationed in Japan & he used to have an Evo 4, he got it for under 7K at a car lot right off base & when the current owner is done with it he will be selling it to someone else for less unless he leaves all of the extra stuff he did to it there like tv & snowboard rack. There are some other people with evos here too that will be selling them. It really depends on what they want to sell it for. Cars can go cheap when the people are PCSing & need to get rid of their stuff. I have a Toyota Curren I got for just $1800 with both sets of tires.

& while Yen is currently more valuable than the US dollar, since you are going to be living at a US military base, you have the option to pay in USD. If you buy on base you can do that but if you buy off base most likely you will be paying in Yen. & remember, the exchange rate is constantly changing so keep on the lookout for what it is when you PCS
