Is the American prison system more about punishment or more about rehabilitation?

They are more about punishment and do not actually increase public safety at all. In fact, our prisons release people worse off than when they entered. That is why our system does not work and our recidivism rate is so high."A recent VIJ report highlights the different approaches to sentencing and incarceration used in Germany and the Netherlands.6 In those countries, the emphasis is on rehabilitation and resocialization rather than just punishment. Incarceration is used less frequently and for shorter periods of time. Sanctions such as fines, probation and community-service are used as alternatives to incarceration when possible, particularly for non-violent crimes. The conditions and practices in the correctional facilities are meant to resemble life in the community. The end goal of incarceration is for ex-prisoners to be better citizens upon release, thereby increasing public safety.Scandinavian countries are often considered models of successful incarceration practices, particularly Norway which, at 20%, has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world. Here, too,the focus is far more on rehabilitation and less on punishment. The thinking is that justice for society is best served by releasing prisoners who are less likely to reoffend. The Norwegian penal philosophy is that traditional, repressive prisons do not work, and that treating prisoners humanelyimproves their chances of reintegrating in society."http://salve.edu/sites/default/f...

I wrote a negative online review about an attorney in 2011. He has contacted me and other family members to get me to "remove" what he calls a “defamatory" review. He continues to threaten “further action”. How can I make him stop?

This is easy.  Opinion is protected speech.  He's a bully.  He has not sued you because he knows he would lose.  Your speech is bad for business.  No wonder he wants you to take it down.  So he's intimidating you.  He's an a#%hole. I take it he lost your case.  I take it that upset you.  Think you're alone?  Do you think you're the only person in the country who has ever been dissatisfied by the service their lawyer provided?   Why do you think lawyer jokes are so funny? These litigation services do not come cheap.  If he botched your case, you SHOULD be good and angry.  (And in my experience, most lawyers botch most cases.)There's something else to look at here:  The date of your post. This happened in 2011?  That was THREE YEARS AGO.  Revenge is sweet.  If you did not accuse him of doing anything you cannot prove, and assuming your opinion is what he's mad about, and assuming your posts were protected speech, stand your ground!  Put the review back up and post his threats right next to it!And be sure to send it to him. With a friendly note: I thought you would like to see this.  Draw a smiley face. That must be some review if other people are circulating it.  (And btw, Could you send it to me?)You should be prepared for the fact that he may sue you for the satisfaction of forcing you to pay all kinds of legal fees to defend his worthless lawsuit, while he fights you for free.  No problem... Sue him back.   Many states now have "anti-SLAPP" laws. He is suing you to harass you, not because his case has any merit.  If you win he pays your legal fees AND your damages claim.Of course, if what you wrote was defamatory, i.e., you accused him of stealing from you or you mentioned what appeared to be a drug problem, etc., you should not re-post it.  But the one-year statute of limitations should deter any further headaches from him.  He's missed the boat.  The SOL is gone.  Not your problem.Of course, this is why people hate lawyers.

I am a 23 year old, working at TCS. My main goal right now is to increase my salary, but I am unable to decide between an MBA, MS, or a job switch? What should I do?

Probably I am the right person to answer this,5 years back, I was in the same situation as you are in now. I was working with Infosys and my salary was very low.So to make things simplefirst decide what do you want in life, if you want to go for higher education , go for it, if you want to pursue MBA, just prepare for it, don’t go for it blindly just by following others, if you really want to do it then do itIf you want to be on technical side, you can target any from two types of organizationProduct based - high salary, high technical job, and less overseas opportunitiesService based - low salary, low technical job bit high chances to go abroad which eventually will give you chance to make money. Here you can find my answer for more details about companies Rahul Mittal's answer to Which is a better place to work at in India: service based software companies or product based software companies? My opinion - don’t think much about money at this stage of life, work on you technical skills if you want to be in technical job, learn new technologies, learn data structures, solve problems, discuss problems with your friends, drag them into some quality discussion rather than bashing your manager. It will help you to grow your skills and eventually will give you enough confidence to face any kind of interview and make you understand your self worth.
