In Psycho 1960 Does Norman Bates Have Other Mental Illnesses

What mental illness does Norman Bates have on Bates Motel?

He appeared to dissociate when his father was abusing his mother and then he killed him. He woke up later with no memory of that. He also killed his teacher because he had a hallucination of his mother telling him he knew what to do (meaning kill, I guess?) after she was coming on to him, again, with no memory of killing her.

In Psycho (1960) does Norman Bates have other mental illnesses?

I'm doing a paper on that character and I know he has split personality? But if he was diagnosed today, would they peg him with other mental disorders too? I notice he doesn't have friends, aside from his mother who is actually dead, and also hardly goes out. He is very reclusive. Does this mean he's depressed or autistic or something else too?

Is the mental disorder that Norman Bates had in Psycho or Bates Motel a real illness?

I know DID is really but I'm talking exactly how his illness started. DID is usually brought on by trauma happening to you. Sexual abuse, beatings, a car accident, etc. Norman Bates (who is fictional) killed his dad and that's when his illness started.

When HE did something bad to someone else. He forgot about killing his dad and repressed it away that same day. Are there real cases of people NOT being mentally ill before but after doing something bad repress the memory away as if it never happened?.....can they feel
It happened?

What type of mental issue do you think Norman Bates had?

Being abused by his birth mother, saying things like all women are whores and intercourse is sinful. The degree to which his mother and Norman had a relationship was said to be borderline incestuous. When his mother decided to re-marry and open a motel, Norman was filled with envious rage and murdered his mother and her fiancé, making it look like a murder-suicide (by Norma, Normans mother).Afterwards he gets treated for shock, where after he develops the very rare DID(Dissociative Identity Disorder) to repress the feelings associated with the incident. This is what I have read, I have not seen the films; but they are all fictitious. Having a mother become so controlling, and then having so much rage that he murders them both; seems fitting to develop DID. If he loved his mother so much, that he murdered her in envy, and we have to believe that he didn't know what he was doing, that swirl of emotions is plausible to cause so much distress he has to repress it.We know this, his mother was the main person in his life; as he was kept under the assumption that all women (but herself) were whores. Then his father dies (from that time onto adolescence Norman and his mother lived alone together "as if there was no one else in the world") and then his mother wants to get married and open a motel. So now, you’re taking a child who has been raised pretty much in captivity/controlled environment, and removing his “perfect nun mother” (that he believes is the only non whore) and taking her away?He then cleverly murders them, placing it as a suicide; and then develops DID.(if you read on he develops DID as 3 people, Norman, Norma and a “normal”. Norman isa child constantly belittled and abused by Norma (his mother), Norman is dependant on Norma. But this is where it gets interesting; Norma threatens and kills anyone who threatens her existence. As if Norman needs her to exist, in a way he is telling the world that “it wasn’t all his fault” and that his mother was in fact a horrible person. And the “normal” Norman does the day to day shit, like maintaining the house he inherited)Fun fact: Norman keeps his deceased mother in the house. Yummy.

Why did Norman Bates kill Marion in the shower in Psycho 1960?

Warning: spoilers!Norman Bates killed Marion Crane in the shower all because he was a schizophrenic psychopath, a madman horribly obsessed with his mother, even after he killed her.At the end of Psycho (which undoubtedly has the best twist ending ever!), we found out that Norman’s mother did not commit suicide as previously believed, but was murdered with her lover by a overly jealous Norman. Unable to bear the guilt, the latter exhumed her corpse and began to treat it as if she were still alive. And that’s not all: the worse part was that Norman, in order to preserve that illusion, recreated his mother in his own mind as an alternate personality, often dressing in her clothes and talking to himself in her voice.Sure enough, the “Mother” personality is jealous and possessive, for whenever Norman feels attracted to a woman, “Mother” would kill her. As a result, as “Mother”, Norman had killed two young girls prior to Marion, as well as Detective Arbogast. Finally, it is implied that the “Mother” personality has taken permanent control of Norman’s mind.Hence, Norman Bates’ motive for the murder was simply mental illness and schizophrenic psychopathy.

Was Norman Bates a psychopath?

Nope, Norman bates has Dissociative Identity disorder, though the disorder was played out in a fictional way, and is not reflective of how it effects those in real life, He was pretty much the opposite of a psychopath, They are simply cold, calculating individuals who have a different genetic brain structure, they do not suffer from delusions and Dissociative identity disorder or DID for short, can not be comorbid with primary psychopath or ASPD with primary factor 1 traits.

What mental disorder does Norman Bates have?

Norman Bates has multiple disorders very noticable in the television series Bates Motel. Schizophrenia, Autism/Aspergers, OCD, Discosiative Identity Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The most noticable in the early seasons were his Autism and PTSD.He gained his truama from being a frequent witness to abuse between his parents, most memorable being the tragic death of his father. This spiked and fueled his future schizophrenia and DID. Most iconically, Norman appears different everyone else his age. Lacks social cues, seems socially awkward and likes his and his mothers routine (autism). Those with autism can excel in areas such as writing and creativity to which Norman infact had. Norman struggled often to find his footing of where he truly felt he belonged with his peers. Which left him even more attatched to Norma. In a stressful period, Norman's PTSD spiked and elevated his DID. This was the first sign of his inevitable psychotic breakdown. These types of disorders can cause patient to have blackouts during worser episodes. As Norman became even more strongly associated with his mother, he then became quickly obsessed starting his Schizophrenia to become out of control. In his mind everyone was against him, there is no second option, he must take action, his mother is the only safe place.I personally found Norman's outcome very sad and tragic. If social services were involved at an early age, his breakdown may never of happened. The example of the Fictional character is very realistic to those with a past of abuse or trauma and it makes me concerned for those struggling currently. It is important to note that those diagnosed with autism are 80% more likely to have other mutliple mental disorders such as the ones I have listed for Norman.Let me know what you guys think.

What psychological condition or disorder does Norman Bates have in Bates Motel?

Norman is suffering from a psychological disorder I.e. Mpd (Multiple personality disorder). This disorder is characterized by Multiple personalities inside a single individual. The patient suffers from Blackouts during which the other personality takes over and the patient has no idea about the personality or personalities residing inside him or her. They are completely unaware of what these personalities do in their wake. In Bates motel Norman becomes his mother many a times and he does various activities which he is unaware of. The show also explains that due to the voilent behavior of his father he was too afraid to face him. This fear became too strong to hold for him and as a result a personality of Norma appears in him and he kills his father which he is completely unaware of. The personality gradually starts taking excessive control over Norman and he kills many people just because the multiple personality of Norma thinks that the people are not safe for Norman even when they are totally safe…..E.g. Blaire Watson and many more characters…

Is it possible that Norman Bates (in Bates Motel) has a form of schizophrenia?

No, he has Dissociative Identity Disorder. There’s no relationship between Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) and Schizophrenia at all. The clues to the differences between these two disorders are right there in their names. Dissociative Identity Disorder is characterized by a severely dissociative, or separated, identity. Schizophrenia is characterized by the splitting, or breaking, of the mind’s capacity to function. They are not even remotely the same thing. Continuing to treat them as such perpetuates gross misunderstandings that isolate people with both of these disorders.
