In State/ Out Of State Fees Tuition

Why are out-of-state tuition and fees higher than in-state tuition and fees?

Public state schools are supported by tax dollars of the residents of the state, so they pay lower fees.

What does “in state” vs “out of state” tuition mean?

This pertains only to public universities.Residency requirements vary but generally require you live in the state for 2–3 years before applying, in order to get lower tuition.“In Sate” in this case means you are a resident of California and tuition is subsidized by state taxes.Out of state (OOS) means yo are not a resident of California, so tuition is not subsidized and you pay the higher price, which is closer to the market price for private universities. At private universities, the tuition is the same regardless of residency.Regardless, most students don't pay the full price. Many gets grants or loans to help cover the costs.Look at the net price you pay, not the list price.

What are in-state and out-of-state tuition fees?

Keeping it simple, in-state tuition fees refers to the fees students who belong (are residents) to the same state as the University have to pay.  Out-of-state tuition fees refers to the fees students who are not residents of the state have to pay. How they define "residents" here can also vary. Even though I am not sure, some states say that a US resident would be considered as in-state if they completed their high school from that state. In-state tuition fees is quite low in amount compared to the out-state. One of the reasons is that state schools are funded majorly by tax dollars from the residents of that state. So it's more like they are entitled to a lower tuition rate as compared to non-residents. International students also come under the "out-of-state" category since they are non-immigrant residents. As to why some public schools have higher tuition, even for in-state. Well I am honestly not sure about the details. There can be multiple parameters - how much  they are subsidized by their own state, state appropriations, land related taxes and such. What do colleges mean by "Out-of-State" tuition?

Yes, you will be considered an "Out-of-State" (Non-resident) student. It sounds like you are currently a California resident. Just because will be residing in Indiana to attend school, it does not imply that are you an Indiana resident. In fact, the trend for most universities is that they are making it more difficult to change your residency status for tuition purposes.

If you register for 6 or more credits and you are classified as a Non-resident, you will not be permitted to change your residency status since your primary intent to be in that state is for education. In other words, your intention is to be a student rather than a permanent resident of that state.

Normally to establish residency, you must reside in the state for at least 12 months prior to the start of your first semester. You must also file Resident State taxes in that state. Also, registering to vote in that state may be considered an intent to make it your legal residence. Also, full-time employment, owning a home or paying a lease or rent are also intents to make a state your legal residence.

Best wishes!

Yeahhhh! All the schools in Louisiana are pretty easy to get in-state tuition to. They are trying to attract more students because less are going to four-year colleges and more are going to two-year colleges. I'm stuck with Louisiana for college if I don't get any scholarships to other schools. :( I don't want to go there.
