In This Family Tree Who Looks Least Like Everybody Else

Are there any free sites like Ancestry, that let you trace your family history?

The best free genealogy site is undoubtedly Free Family History and Genealogy Records for census records and other records.NEVER copy free family trees from that site or any other site. We all start that way, patting ourselves on the back for finding our entire family tree, but it is almost guaranteed to be full of errors. I look back at my original tree and shudder. How did I miss women who allegedly gave birth at age 60? How did I believe that kid was born AFTER his father? Okay, I can be forgiven for mistaking one John Leavell born at about the same time in the same county for another one, but it sure messed up my tree. Use free family trees for hints, but go to Free Family History and Genealogy Records or even a pay site like Ancestry to find documents that back up those trees’ claims. For fairly recent obituaries, try Legacy.com | Where Life Stories Live On but older obituaries are available at pay sites. For grave records and tombstone photos try BillionGraves or http://findagrave.com but remember that people can link graves to each other, and just like free family trees, they may make mistakes linking children to alleged parents.Go to your public library and sign out Genealogy for Dummies or similar books and they’ll give you great advice.Don’t forget a Google search, but be as detailed as you can. If you’re looking for John Smith, you’ll get millions of hits. Make it “John Smith 1895 Whitfield County Massachusetts”. If his wife has an unusual name, search for her instead. Remember to try different spellings. He might be listed as John Smythe in some important record. For some reason, personal web sites don’t always show up in general searches. I’ve had a free website up for many years with Leavell, Tyner, Perkins, Goodwin, Sherrill, Hackleman, Adkins, Beard, and dozens of other names, but when I search for them (even just by the surname) the pages don’t show up.

Can alcoholism run in a family history like high blood pressure?

In short, yes. However, if you've only had one family member with an alcohol problem this doesn't necessarily mean that you're doomed to the same fate.

As with other addictions and disorders, there are many factors that can result in a person being more susceptible to alcoholism. Yes, genetics plays a role, but you have to keep in mind that having it run in the family might not be as genetic as it is an environmental factor. This varies on a case by case basis, but someone might end up an alcoholic because he/she saw a parent, a relative, or a close friend do it. Monkey see, monkey do. It could be because of your genes, especially if you're a Native American. They are, in fact, predisposed to alcoholism dependency.

In the end, even people who are more susceptible to addictions can avoid becoming addicted. You're only 15 years old and technically, you shouldn't be drinking at this age. This is a time in your life where you'll experience a lot of different emotions and problems, and many people your age tend to deal with their problems by partying (drinking and doing drugs). If you ever get to a point where you need some sort of relief, it would be smarter for you to talk with someone in your family that you trust. Not even your friends are trustworthy at this age.

I'm not saying you should avoid your friends and not have a life, but if there's something that you feel uncomfortable with doing or saying, then follow your gut. Try to focus more on your studies though. And if this issue is still on your mind, do some research of your own.

I recommend taking a few psychology or addiction studies courses either at school or a local community college/university. This way you'll know how much of it applies to you and you'll also be better informed to make smarter decisions about drinking in the future.

How do you celebrate the winter solstice?

i don't celebrate the winter solstice. i celebrate christmas. there's no law that says you have to believe in jesus to do so.

Why do some people who are not related by blood look alike?

Although we are exquisitely attuned to find differences in faces, there are only so many types of structures that make a normal human face, and with billions of people in the world, it's not surprising that unrelated individuals end up looking alike simply by chance. We underestimate the role of chance in life, and that's why we are always surprised by what seem to be impossible coincidences, but when we actually calculate the probability of these "oddities" happening, they are not that odd. It's a common cognitive bias (for more on probabilities and cognitive biases, see here: List of cognitive biases). Also, once somebody starts posting pictures of look-alikes in the internet, we immediately think that there are more cases of look-alikes than there may actually exist, because of availability bias (Availability heuristic).  Especially when the people posting the pictures look for (and improve by Photoshop), the pictures that best confirm the resemblance, and ignore others in which they don't look so alike.

Decorating your Christmas tree!?

Hi Daisy, I like different sorts of ornaments. I rarely have more than one of each kind on my tree and I try to buy at least one new one each year....if not more lol. I usually string beads of cranberries (fake of course), but it still gives the same effect. Many years ago my mother and I popped popcorn and strung it on the tree, not realizing that we poppped it in butter and that it would eventually leak all over the presents underneath the tree. What a mess we had ! LMAO......we should have air popped it. We never had the chance to do it again tho.

Why do people think everyone in Kentucky in incest?

Seriously. I'm from Kentucky, I've lived here my whole life and everyone that I know think it's just as nasty and inappropriate as you guys do. And we're not all illiterate either. I've recently seen all there kentucky stereotypes and it kind of pisses me off. Can someone please explain why people believe this crap? Because its wrong, if you've actually been to Kentucky you would probably know that.
