What is globalization?

Globalization, as the name suggests, indicates the worldwide presence of anything related to trade ,culture, education, art and politics. However, the term is predominantly used to indicate how the free movement of goods and services have made the inter-national borders irrelevant and created inter-dependency between world economies. In a globalized economy, people from one part of the world get access to goods and services offered from another part with ease. For instance, an Indian can get his hands on iPhone on the same day it's launched at its Californian head quarters in Cupertino. Thanks to the advent of internet, an European company can now get its business processes performed by the Indian and Filipino professionals sitting at their desks located thousands of miles away from the company's head quarters. Besides that, the mass generation of employment by multinational companies in developing economies like India,Brazil help lift millions out of poverty. The first step for any country to become a part of globalized economy is liberalizing its domestic economy by encouraging market driven trades and deregulating the low risk business sectors and then opening its doors to Foreign Direct investors and foreign Institutional investors. For instance,India got assimilated into the globalized economy in the year of 1991 when a string of reform policies introduced by PV Narasimha Rao led central government threw open the doors of Indian economy for multinational companies and the rest is history! As with anything, globalization comes with a cost. Firstly, the cut-throat competition posed by multinational companies to the small companies might potentially drive them out of business. Secondly, due to the intertwined nature of economies, any slump or incidents in any corner of the world will impact the rest of the economies. In a nutshell, the free movement of goods, services, technology and ideas aided by Globalization across the national borders has made one feel the world as a huge global village!

Do you think that globalization will inevitably lead to the total loss of cultural identity? Why?

Yes, I do. That’s based on observation — people move from country to country and trade ideas, and the world has (to use a cliché) become a much smaller place as communications and transportation have improved. One can see this happening in many ways — the near-universal adoption of European dress, for example, or the worldwide popularity of American film and music. The spread of capitalism and democracy is another example of how nations are absorbing a different way of life.If Chinese people go wild for Harry Potter, as they did, they are absorbing something of the British way of looking at and doing things. Then too, there is the European Union, which has to some extent bridged the differences between European nations, and the use of English as a lingua franca (and who knows, that may someday be Chinese). So far, nations have also held on to their individual character, but as the general direction is one of homogenization and mutual influence, I think that that will ultimately erode as well. This actually concerns me. I have no objection to nations adopting cultural innovations that have proved beneficial in others — that’s one of the ways humanity advances. But I’m concerned that, as we reduce cultural diversity, we will stifle the natural laboratory in which cultural innovations are made, and the inter-group competition that keeps us on our toes. The situation as I see it is very much akin to the loss of genetic diversity.

What is the nature of Islam? And what are the contributions of Islam in the modern world?

Beautiful architecture, caligraphy, astonomy, geometry, Algebra, the modern numerical system.
