That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be
(Carly Simon/Jacob Brackman)

My father sits at night with no lights on
His cigarette glows in the dark.
The living room is still;
I walk by, no remark.
I tiptoe past the master bedroom where
My mother reads her magazines.
I hear her call sweet dreams,
But I forgot how to dream.

But you say it's time we moved in together
And raised a family of our own, you and me -
Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be:
You want to marry me, we'll marry.

My friends from college they're all married now;
They have their houses and their lawns.
They have their silent noons,
Tearful nights, angry dawns.
Their children hate them for the things they're not;
They hate themselves for what they are-
And yet they drink, they laugh,
Close the wound, hide the scar.

But you say it's time we moved in together
And raised a family of our own, you and me -
Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be:
You want to marry me, we'll marry.

You say we can keep our love alive
Babe - all I know is what I see -
The couples cling and claw
And drown in love's debris.
You say we'll soar like two birds through the clouds,
But soon you'll cage me on your shelf -
I'll never learn to be just me first
By myself.

Well O.K., it's time we moved in together
And raised a family of our own, you and me -
Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be,
You want to marry me, we'll marry,
We'll marry.

Name of 70's song. I think it is by Carly Simon?

Part of the lyrics go like this "....I never wanted I never wanted to love a man the way I want to love you..." "...You are sunshine..." "...The way that you touch me..."

What is the best Paul Simon song?

The man could write a catchy lyric and/or make a social statement. Tell me you aren't dancing to this?Now you're on your feet, let's sing: ...and he reached out to, supported and influenced:for just plain perfection (last one, I promise):N.B.: Bridge Over Troubled Water was the third album I bought with my paper run money.

What are the 10 (give or take) best Carole King songs?

Not in order:1. "Now and Forever"2. "You've Got a Friend"3. "Loving You Forever"4. "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman"5.  "So Far Away"6. "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"7. "Beautiful"8. "Loco-Motion"9. "One Fine Day"10. "Some Kind of Wonderful"11. "Take Good Care of My Baby"12. "Up On the Roof"13. "Song of Long Ago"

In Carly Simon’s “You’re so Vain,” she sings: “You’re so vain, I bet you think this song is about you.” Since it ‘is’ about him (whoever), then how would that make him vain?

That’s the whole joke. Carly has a wickedly funny sense of humor in “You’re So Vain”.By saying you probably think this song is about you, she creates a logical hook - of course the song is about its subject. It’s a trap - who could deny that a song that is written in the 2nd person is about that person. Of course, taking ownership of that immediately brands the person as vain. A brilliant approach indeed!Note that there are so many instances in the song that indict the subject as well, including watching himself gavotte, having his horse “naturally” win at Saratoga, and giving away the things he loves (one of them being Ms. Simon).Just writing about “You’re So Vain” reminds me that it is one of the truly brilliant pop songs ever written. Certainly a top 100. Perfect production value as well.

Who was Carly Simon writing about in 'You're So Vain'? Why?

The song is about Carly Simon.The lyrics of the song, the hidden hint in the original recording, the hidden hint in her later song, her running tease with interviewers over the years, and the incredibly self-referential page on her website when seen together betray the truth about this question.The song was born as, and remains, a very clever publicity play. Pardon if this sounds sexist, but a woman knows that mystery is the essence of attraction.Her web page drops the best clue. From Fame magazine, "For the record, Simon acknowledges the song is a little about Beatty." The song is about several men, and how she feels she was mistreated by them. Then the correct answer is, the song is about a composite of them all, right?  No, it's about Carly Simon – the type of man she chooses, her archetypal relationship as seen through her own eyes, and most of all, her clever strategy of self promotion.I love the song, how it so poetically paints an image that we all can relate to. Sympathy for a victim who's been played by sophisticated player is a theme of many great songs, and You're So Vain tops them all.  It is however slightly ironic, that we've been all been played, just a little bit, by this question.

What Carly Simon Song is Brittany Murphy singing while she on the bathroom floor in the movie "Uptown Girls"?

you're so vain...actually that might be wrong. if memory serves its let the river run.
